KU grad Russell reaches finals

He only took one turn in his first Olympic appearance. However, that's all former Kansas thrower Scott Russell needed to qualify for Saturday's final of the men's javelin.

— Former Kansas University standout Scott Russell, competing for Canada, advanced to the finals of the Olympics javelin competition today.

In rainy conditions, Russell slipped and fell but still threw 80.42 meters on his first throw to win Group A. Overall, he ranked sixth in qualifying.

The finals will be at 6:10 a.m. (Central time) Saturday.
