Coaches raise money at golf tournament

On Monday, Tubby Smith (Minnesota), Tim Jankovich (Illinois State), Dana Altman (Creighton), Lon Kruger (UNLV), Phil Martelli (St. Joe's), Gregg Marshall (Wichita State), Nolan Richardson (Arkansas, retired), Gene Keady (Purdue, retired) and Bo Ryan (Wisconsin) joined Big 12 mentors Bill Self (Kansas), Mike Anderson (Missouri), Frank Martin (Kansas State) and Greg McDermott (Iowa State) at the CBE Celebrity Golf Tournament at The National to raise money for the College Basketball Experience.

"I hit some bad shots and some pretty good ones today," said Self, who thrilled KC Chiefs broadcasting legend Bill Grigsby by sinking a 45-foot putt on No. 9. Grigsby had shuffled some media members out to take TV footage of Self on the Tom Watson-designed course.

Self joked about some of the coaches' games.

"McDermott from Iowa State thinks he can really play. Anderson of Missouri obviously thinks he can play. I saw Martin play, and he's not any good," Self said with a laugh. "Everybody can play a little bit. Most of the guys that coach at one point of time in their life was a fairly gifted athlete from a natural standpoint. Nolan Richardson is a really good player," he added in a serious tone.

Wall's list narrowed

John Wall, a 6-4 senior point guard from Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C., currently has a final list of seven schools, Rivals.com reports. They are: KU, Memphis, Baylor, Oregon, Kentucky, North Carolina State and Oklahoma State.

LJW Sports writers - So can we get a good close-up shot of the championship rings?? I want to see those babies!

Also, did the football team get Orange Bowl rings? didn't know if that was a common practice or not, considering it wasn't a championship of any kind.

A kid from Raleigh,NC and has not been recruited by North Carolina or Duke. Maybe he has maybe he has not. Just a little weird to me if a kid is as good as Wall is why wouldn't UNC or Duke recruit this kid in there own backyard. Hope they don't know something that we don't know. Character issues? Take a look at his final list. Normally those schools take risk on troubled kids. Not always but normally. Oklahoma State, Memphis, etc...Maybe I am looking to deep into this. Hope I am.

Watch out for Baylor!!! Apparently, they hired Wall's AAU coach. We've become all too familiar with how well that trick works...ahem, Michael Beasley.

Yes, There is like a 98% chance Wall will be playing for Baylor. I have been arguing with a bunch of Baylor people about what that means for their team. I don't think its the right move for that kid. If Baylor is lucky they break into the top 3 in the conference with Wall on their team.

Wall has a bunch of leeches and wannabes in his company.

Too bad Bedore doesn't ever have the forethought to see how much better Scout is at recruiting than Rivals.

You think that's funny?

Purple BB fans have to watch Martin try to coach next year. Every B12 opponent will be laughing.

TKELuke:

Let's see. Top three in the Big XII. Kansas, Texas, Baylor. That sounds like pretty good company to me. You could likely chalk up a sweet 16 too.

Ummmm, derringer...if you are looking for the top two players you would be talking about Henry and DeMarcus Cousins.

Yep, he (Wall) won't get much TV-time at Baylor, that's for sure.

I think one of the reasons Wall is attracted to Baylor is that his family is religious. I believe he plays for a Christian school now. Baylor was founded as a Baptist university......Put two and two together?

jayhawkinati- You are right we do know how hiring someone close to an elite recruit can work. It got us two national titles.

dlshaw74- Did it ever occur to you that maybe Wall was recruited by Duke and UNC and that Wall eliminated them from his list?

Wall plays for Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C., but isn't he from elsewhere? TX or something?

Also, nutflush, don't get brainwashed by the mizzoo whiners. Ronnie was hired by KU mid-summer, if I remember correctly; 9 months after Mario signed to play for us. His being hired by KU had just as much to do with the NC as anybody else working for the BB team.

If anybody is interested, rivals.com updated their 2009 Rivals150. Henry dropped one spot to #3, Wall remained #1, and this Thomas Robinson (High level of interest in KU) moved from #82 to #18.

KU starts recruiting this kid and all of the sudden he jumps to 18. Funny how that works.

dagger- The bottom line is hiring someone in hopes of luring a high level player to sign is a common practice in college basketball. We have done it and it worked wonderfully. Now maybe we can hire Carl Henry to fill Ronnie's position :)

Scout is more accurate and up to date compared to Rivals. For those serious about basketball Scout is the way to go.

Go to Phog. Net; basketball recruiting and see the next three years rankings.

Are you saying Rivals is better than Scout at basketball recruiting? If so you are so far off base it's very funny.

Rivals is better at football but not basketball. Fact.

Hasn't anyone told Wall that he'll get to play for one of Saint James Naismith's flock? Surely he knows that the Jayhawk is a religious icon. Remind Wall that Allen Field House is the sanctuary of college basketball. Many a Jayhawk has been baptized in Potters Lake. Water was turned into Coors and channel catfish was turned into loaves of bread in Lawrence. The Rock Chalk chant is a sacrament. And the recent NC was an example of the Lord helping those that help themselves.

Do I hear an AMEN, brothers and sisters?
