Stephen Hoge is one of three kickers vying for the starting job at Kansas University. Hoge is battling with fellow red-shirt freshman Jacob Branstetter and junior-college transfer Grady Fowler.

When starting Kansas University kicker Scott Webb graduated last year, he left some pretty big shoes to fill.

Good thing three new players are ready for the job.

Jacob Branstetter and Stephen Hoge, both red-shirt freshmen, and Grady Fowler, a junior-college transfer from Butler Community College, are battling for the starting kicker spot.

"We have competition for (kicker)," coach Mark Mangino said. "All of them do something very, very well, and all of them have areas that they have to work on. But at the end of the day, I think we're going to be OK. I think we might have more than one really good kicker at the end of the day."

Mangino declined to give any hints about which he would send out onto the field.

"There's a lot of encouraging signs from that group, but we're letting that play out," he said. "It's a three-way race."

According to special-teams coordinator Louie Matsakis, that race is too close to call.

Even the players can't tell who's leading the way.

"We're all kicking really well at the moment," Branstetter said. "I mean, I don't look at numbers, and I don't pay attention to that, but we're really accurate right now. I really couldn't tell you who's doing better. (The competition) is going to play out really nice here over the next couple weeks."

Although Branstetter, Hoge and Fowler are striving for the same thing, the three have remained close friends.

"I think there's a good separation between the playing field and in the dorms, playing cards, watching movies, whatever we're doing," Branstetter said. "We all have a good understanding that when we're on the practice field, there's no hard feelings between anybody, no offense taken to anything. We kick the ball as best as we possibly can individually."

And none of the three potential kickers is afraid of a little competition.

"It's been a lot of fun," Hoge said. "You come to a D-1 school like Kansas and you know you're going to have to compete. That's what the sport is all about."

Added Fowler: "We've got three good kickers competing for the job right now. What more could you ask for? We're set."

Matsakis said he recognizes the difficulty of introducing a new starter, but he, like his players, is up for the challenge.

"I think anytime you lose a kid who's done it for four years there will be a little drop-off," he said. "It's just a matter of trying to get them sped up quicker. I think we'll be good. As long as they get better and just keep improving every day, I think we'll be great."

Whoever ends up in the starting spot, the players are simply eager for the chance to play.

"I look forward to the opportunity for one of us to get in there and show what we can do," Branstetter said. " I think if we just stay true to our technique and the things that Scott taught us, we can do as well as Scott did and carry on the legacy of great kickers at Kansas."

Kicking is the X-factor for this team. I have been saying for months now, if our kicking game comes through, we will be 10-2, but a lot of my prediction assumes we will not have a problem in this area. Hopefully we won't.

I think we'll be okay. Mangino will tell you how it is. If we were weak at the position he'd be telling the media about all the work that needs to be done. Instead he's saying we've got a three way battle between three talented kids. I'm not predicting an all-America kicker amongst the three, but I think somebody will step up and we'll end up being pretty solid.

If our kicking game doesn't falter, we will beat Missouri and probably OU. We will go 12-0 and face Texas in the Big 12 Title game. We missed 2 field goals against Missouri and several Defensive mistakes where our guys should have made the INTs. Fix those small things and we would have won that game by 20. And ya know something else? OU is going to be under alot of pressure when we play them. We are either leading or its a close game in the 4th quarter, we have the advantage there, and that is where the Kicking game comes into play. I think our defense will be stout and our offense, well it will be high powered. Our offensive Line will be good, our running backs of Sharp, Crawford, and Quigley, Todd Reesing, Dexton Fields, Kerry Meier, and oh yeah, that other fellow that will just a Sophomore this year at the other Wide REceiver Spot. Balance, speed, and athleticism. Hard to defend. We can go 12-0 and win the Big 12 Title and be in Miami for the BCS championship game in January. But the kicking game is key. We're going to be in some close games this year. We were in a few close games last year, but at OU, Texas and TExas Tech at home, and at South Florida, not to mention Missouri at Arrowhead.

jayhawkintx73 I loved your comment and I love how much our program has risen and our fans really believe that is just great. I'm am really looking forward to this year and I cannot wait for it to start. But, I dont know if I buy into the kicking game just yet. The three are two freshman and a JC transfer I have never heard of. While I think that our kicking game will be ok I dont see it being an X factor or staple in our team. We have a great team and others will respect us and I agree completely that we could go 14-0 by seasons end, but I just dont see it actually happening. I see a more 10-2 type team that will have a slip or two along the way. When your playing AT Oklahoma and your in the 4th quarter of a huge nationally televised game a freshman might not have the composure to pull of a game winning kick like that. Now please don't get all upset or anything because I loved the comment and I believe this team is great and will be great and I hope I'm wrong and this team shows me up and goes all the way but I'm just putting in my view of what I see.

Texas is overrated, although they were a young team last year.
