KU assistant basketball coaches rewarded

Like Bill Self, Kansas University's assistant basketball coaches received significant raises in pay this week.

KU officials indicated Friday that assistants Joe Dooley, Danny Manning and Kurtis Townsend will each be paid $234,000 next season. Last year, Dooley made $175,000, Townsend $175,000 and Manning $134,000.

"I believe our assistant coaches deserve to be some of the highest paid assistant coaches in America because they are some of the very best in America," said sixth-year KU head coach Self, who this week signed a contract good for $3 million a year over the next 10 years. "The positives Danny Manning brings to the staff, program and university almost cannot be measured. Joe of course is a terrific coach and recruiter. Kurtis is a terrific coach who has proven that over time. I believe our assistants are as good as any in the country."

Isn't Chalmers the Director of BBall Operations? Maybe he's not mentioned here since he's not technically an assistant.

You might want to research Bill Self's new contract before shooting your mouth off to the felines. KU's assitants are actually getting a higher base salary than head coach Bill Self.

Of course... base salary isn't where it's at for Bill.

"Under the new contract, KU Athletics will pay Self an annual salary of $229,900, unchanged from the previous contract. The compensation package also includes an annual payment of $2,270,100 for professional services, which may include educational, public relations and promotional duties as assigned by the athletic director."

Wow, that's a lot of cash for an assistant coach. I'm all for it, though.

Danny and Joe and Kurtis needed to be recognized among the best. No, Danny is not here for the money. But each man has given unique skills to a team effort. Nice to see Coach Self is loyal to them as well (no surprise).
