Coach touched by gifts

'It's been humbling'

Kansas University coach Bill Self shows off a table given to him by Haskell Indian Nations University painter Elijah Jackson. Self received the congratulatory gift for leading KU to the national championship.

Bill Self has been overwhelmed by all the cards, letters - and even some gifts - delivered to his Kansas University men's basketball head coach's office since the Jayhawks' national championship victory over Memphis on April 7.

"It's been humbling," said Self, standing next to a framed picture sent from one of his former Illinois players, Brian Cook, as well as wrapped bottles of bubbly and various other knick-knacks from assorted well wishers.

"A woman at one of (son) Tyler's baseball games said, 'Congratulations,' then asked me, 'What do you feel like?' I said, 'Great,'" Self said.

"She said, 'You really don't get it, do you?' I said, 'I think I have a clue.' She said, 'You don't understand the magnitude, what this means to so many.' I probably don't. Our players probably don't," Self added.

Self was especially moved by a gift hand made for him by Haskell Indian Nations University painter Elijah Jackson.

Jackson constructed Self a table with the words "National Champions" and "Believe," as well as the scores of KU's Final Four victories over North Carolina and Memphis, on it.

"It's really cool," Self said of what Jackson referred to as "more of a king-sized TV tray."

Jackson, his wife Mary, Haskell athletic director Ted Juneau and members of Haskell's Veterans Club were on hand when Jackson presented the table to Self last week.

"I read or saw on TV it's what he told his team: 'Believe,'" Jackson said. "He told me he had a spot at his house for it. I'm glad he liked it."

Jackson explained what possessed him to make such a special gift, one that Self said he'd hang on a wall of his West Lawrence home.

"I've been in Lawrence for three national championships. I was a little kid in '52. There was '88 and this year," said Jackson, who the past several years has worked concessions at Allen Fieldhouse for KU games with fellow members of the Haskell Veterans Club. "It's been fun following this team. Coach Self has a big fan base at Haskell. There are a lot of Jayhawk fans there. Maybe 40 percent (of students and employees) are from Oklahoma, where he is from also. Everybody appreciates what they (Jayhawks) have been able to do in basketball."

And Self appreciates the love.

"KU Nation or Jayhawk Nation is pretty strong. It is overwhelming for us, for our players too, to see how much people care. It's been so sincere," Self said.

¢Jayhawk Invitational update: The No. 3 high school player in the Class of 2009 will be playing basketball in Allen Fieldhouse next weekend.

Derrick Favors, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound junior power forward from South Atlanta (Ga.) High School, heads the list of blue-chippers scheduled to appear at the ninth-annual Jayhawk Invitational Friday night through Sunday afternoon in Allen, Horejsi Center and other gyms in town.

Favors, who plays for the Atlanta Celtics, has an early list of KU, Duke, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Memphis, Clemson, Arkansas and North Carolina State.

Other members of the Celtics: Noel Johnson, a 6-7 forward from Fayetteville, Ga., who also has listed KU as well as Memphis, Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Alabama; Terrance Shannon, 6-7 from Forsyth, Ga., considering LSU, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky and others. Johnson is ranked 30th and Shannon 44th in the Class of '09.

Elijah Johnson, a 6-2 guard from Las Vegas, who has serious interest in KU, will play point for Los Angeles Pump N Run. The country's No. 38-rated player is also considering UNLV, Duke, North Carolina, Arizona, Florida and others.

Stephan Van Treese, 6-9 from Indianapolis, is slated to play for Indiana Elite. The country's 52 rated player has a final list of KU, Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State, UCLA and Florida. His teammate, 6-10 Mason Plumlee, the No. 66 player in the class, has committed to Duke.

KC Pump N Run boasts two area prospects in Michael Dixon, a 6-0 guard from Lee's Summit West High and Jeff Reid, 6-5 from Topeka Hayden. Dixon, who is ranked 87th in the Class of '09, has a list of KU, Missouri, Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas State, Iowa and others. Reid, who is unranked, already has an offer from Kansas State.

Minnesota Howard Pulley will bring a pair of top prospects to town including Royce White, 6-7 from Hopkins, Minn., (ranked 32nd) and Rodney Williams, 6-5 from New Hope, Minn. (ranked 43rd).

White has orally committed to Minnesota. Williams lists KU as well as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa State and many others.

Xavier Henry, the No. 2 player in the class of 2009, will not attend as he did last year. His Oklahoma Athletes First team is hosting a tournament in Oklahoma the same weekend.

A tournament schedule will be available this week at Jayhawkinvitational.com.

Xavier won't be playing anyway - he was in Dallas yesterday (for the Next Level tournament) and was wearing a big, nasty boot on his right foot due to a bad ankle sprain. Athletes First looked like cr@p without him.

I wouldn't be surprised if us fans take losses (especially in the tourny) harder than the team. I mean, the coach is still going to get paid his millions and a lot of the players will be collecting paychecks in the league in the near future. Plus, many of the players have very little clue about the true Jayhawk tradition. Us fans do this for free, in our spare time, and pour our heart and soul into the seasons. I think the above quote backs up this belief...

To say that fans "care" more is silly. We're not the one's bleeding, sweating, and sacrificing during Boot Camp and the season. Tell Rod that we care more than he does after what he went through and the pain he went through to sit on the bench during the FF. These guys care incredibly invested. They are, however, immersed in it in a completely different way than we are. They're living it - their reactions to it are going to be different than ours. They aren't going to be as emotional, it's their job and to lose focus that way certainly wouldn't be good. Most of the players also haven't been waiting 20 years for this. Some of them may have been fans, but they aren't as tied to the history and the disappointments as we are. Neither is Coach Self. He's been here for 5 years and given us a lot of success here and he also realizes the over importance placed on a NC - relative to how hard it is. They care - to say that they don't understand how KU fans feel isn't to say they don't care. Instead it says that they aren't in our shoes. They have some control over how things are going, they're immersed in it as participants, not fans, and they haven't dealt with the 20 years of disappointment the typical KU fan has. It's also important to note how past players still react - Jacque in SA, Julian, Greg Gurley, etc. All the former players who still follow the team and who came out to support them indicate that it infects them while they'r ehere - it may just be difficult to tell when they're on the court.

Carl Henry scored the last two points in the game in which KU beat KST and started the 23 game winning streak in Manhatten. It'd be a shame if his kid Xaveir does not come to KU. Rock Chalk.

KU has targeted the #2, 3 and 4 recruits in 2009 (according to Rivals). Considering how well Bill Self recruits and the recent renovations to the Jayhawk Towers (that's sarcasm if you didn't know) there's no reason why we won't get at least one of them. We'll end up with at least two 5 star recruits in the class of 2009. Xavier Henry will be a Jayhawk, and I think we have a good shot at John Wall too as the point guard position needs to be hammered down. Who knows what Collins will do next year and we only have Appleton for a couple of years. The hardest part about this upcoming year as a fan is there is no way ku will be able to repeat this years performance for a while. We always want national championships, but you can't have them every year. We only lost 3 games last year......I'll expect to loose at least 8 this year. Either way, I will still watch every game (even Fort Hays State) and cheer. There's something special brewing in the next 10 years with Bill Self roaming the sidelines.

Bleed_Crimson_Blue, that is possibly the dumbest post I've ever read on this website. I'm not even going to respond to all that nonsense you just wrote.

It looks like it will be difficult to get Wall in a KU uniform, but if we can get Henry and Johnson, that's one heck of a class.

Wow, what a group of high caliber players that will visit Phog Allen Fieldhouse and will play on Naismith Court. As always, great job Coach Self. Sounds like this is gonna be another incredible recruiting class. As for what Bleed_Crimson_Blue said, this is part of the learning process of all coaches. It's importantant to note, Self has only been Jayhawk head coach for 5 years. Phog was part of the KU tradition starting at 20 and "got the fan championship/ tradition side" early on simply because his basketballing brothers and he used to rip through competition themselves winning championships, way before he even became a player at KU, much less a Coach. And he coached til he was 70, bleeding every ounce of crimson and blue out of his veins and back in on a yearly basis... but building these multicolored Jayhawk hi-octane blood cells is not an overnight process... When Phog fell in love with KU early on, after being shown the campus by Dr. Naismith, himself, Phog's indescrible passion for championships and winning for "his team" was directly transferred into KU. It helped that Kansas and Lawrence in particular was VERY anti-slavery, unlike the bitter state next door he grew up in. A REAL cause to fight on the sports field, as a Jayhawker... He had something he could REALLY believe in! It was Good versus Evil in his mind...Let's not forget, Self, who also was not born in Kansas, also fell in love with KU early on, growing up in Oklahoma, listening to Bob and Max, and eventually becoming a grad assistant here -- as we all know, he assisted Coach Brown, who played for Dean Smith, who played for THE Phog, who was recruited by THE one and only, doctor Naismith, which in my opinion (Naismith getting Phog, at the time "the World's Best Basketball Thrower") was THE best recruiting "land" in the history of sports. So, strange as it may seem, Self, himself, is directly tied to "the basketball cradle's bloodline tradition" as well... So don't let Self's Oklahoma "oh shucks, it doesn't mean that much to us" fool you. We know it doesn't yet, and that's fine -- his mind is on recruiting right now. Of course it doesn't right now. But it will someday...Don't forget either, the only reason those "history of KU hoops" flicks go up before every game is because of Self. Whether he says it or not, he gets it, maybe not in the moment of a National Championship, but he gets what it will mean someday. He's just so humble, like a wise man, he's not seeing himself as a "statue" yet, nor ever... the truth is, in his mind, there is much more work to be done for Kansas basketball and for the head coach of this "dream" place to coach, Bill Self... but, though he'll never respond to it, we can call him "Phog JR" anytime we want...
