Indianapolis Kansas and North Carolina are regulars at the top of college basketball polls. They were recognized on another list Thursday. The men's teams at the two national powers, which met in the Final Four earlier this month, were included among 712 squads singled out by the NCAA for their solid academic performance.
Kansas, which won the national title a little more than three weeks ago, and North Carolina, the winner in 2005, both had impressive showings on the list. The grades are calculated over a four-year period although the numbers from 2007-08 will not be included until next year.

The top 712? I'm glad for accolades but the article did not put that number in perspective for the reader.

And the title makes it sound like they were in trouble for it - Honored would have been a better word than cited.

I wish I knew for sure, but if I had to guess, it would be 712 out of the total number of varsity collegiate teams in the NCAA. With about 350 Div. 1 schools now, and probably a rough estimate of 10 teams per school, that'd put us in the top 20% of academic standards.
Also, among these 712, I'd wager that there are less than 50 football and men's basketball teams that were honored. Nice distinction, but again, I'm just guesstimating...

Here's some more info from NBCSports - http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/24301052/
From the numbers it looks like our team had done extremely well. However it is important to note that the reported academic numbers DO NOT include the results of the year 2007-08. :)
Even though we have several seniors graduating, with 3 potential early departures I am not sure if the 2007-08 team will make the required 60% graduation rate!

Since it's been such a phenomenon over the last few years, there's a new stipulation for players that leave early for the pros.
They don't hurt you as long as they leave in good academic standing.

Terrible headline: "Cited?"
How about lauded? Commended? Honored?
Cited carries a negative connotation: Journalism 101.

is that because writers always hate having to cite their sources?

Great, now everybody who didn't read the story and just looked at the headline is going to think we're in academic trouble. Then Xavier Henry won't commit, then the whole program goes down the drain.

You guys are so right. What an absolutely ridiculous headline. Here's another suggestion: recognized.
I think the headline writer should be cited for incredibly poor use of the English language.
100, I like most of your all-time team but vehemently disagree with DV being in the starting lineup. He was a great player, but I would put Jo Jo significantly ahead of him. In fact I would also put Hinrich ahead of him. It would be very close between Jo Jo and Hinrich for the last starting spot.
I think Bill Bridges would deserve a spot on the team as well, and Carl Henry and Kelly Knight should definitely be on there (and what the hell, throw in Booty Neal, Jeff Boschee and Billy Thomas as well, to get some firepower from deep).
