Kansas University's football team received a oral commitment from Deshaun Sands, a 5-foot-9 running back out of Coconut Creek, Fla.
Sands is the youngest son of former KU running back Tony Sands, one of the Jayhawks' most decorated running backs ever. Deshaun spent the first few years of his life in Lawrence and stayed a KU fan ever since - even watching Monday's national-championship basketball game betwen Kansas and Memphis.
"He was screaming through the whole house," Tony Sands said with a laugh.
Deshaun Sands has enjoyed a decorated prep career at Monarch High to this point, but always told his friends that his "dream offer" would be Kansas. He received it and quickly committed, becoming the Jayhawks' first commitment in the 2009 class.
"He's very excited," Tony Sands said. "It's been a dream for him that he was looking for all his life."
Deshaun Sands plans to graduate from high school early and enroll at KU in time for spring football in 2009.
For more on Sands' commitment, check back to KUSports.com or read Friday's Journal-World.

What a great story!! We need guys like this - totally dedicated to the program. It reminds me of Wayne Simeon signing with KU at the first opportunity. Tony Sands was a great back with a ton of heart, he helped turn our program around during the dark days. The younger Sands is taller than his dad, hopefully his heart is as big - it seems to be so far.

Maybe he'll follow daddy's lead and run for 400 yards against Misery.

Now if Xavier Henry's dad can do the same for the B-ball team that would be good in continuing family tradition

Wow, I'm kind of confused too. Says Deshaun is the "youngest" son of Sands? Sands was at KU between 1988 - 1991. That was only 17 years ago. His youngest son is committing? I guess he was busy with more than just football while he was at KU.
That said, Tony Sands was a monster while he was here. Very excited to see his son continue the tradition.
