Kansas University senior basketball guard Rodrick Stewart had successful surgery Wednesday to repair a fractured right kneecap.
Stewart, who sustained the injury trying a dunk at last Friday's Final Four shootaround at the Alamodome in San Antonio, is expected to be able to be back in the gym working out in six to eight weeks and be ready to play basketball again in 12 weeks.
"He is doing fine," Stewart's dad, Bull, reported Wednesday night. "The doctor called and said it went well. The surgery was perfect. No meniscus, no ACL tears, no tendon damage. He said Rodrick is a strong, healthy young man, and I was glad to hear that."
Bull Stewart said Dr. Jeff Randall of KU's medical team performed the surgery in Lawrence.
"A pin will be taken out after six weeks," Stewart said. "It'll take six to eight weeks to heal. I'm so happy for Rodrick. He's so happy Kansas rallied around him. He's a great kid. I'm so proud to be his dad."
Rodrick Stewart hopes to play professionally somewhere next year.

Very good news for Rod. that was so sad to hear when that happened to him. I don't know if the game would have warranted him to play in the final.....but he definitely would have played vs. UNC. Good luck to him and congrats to his effort and improvement thoughout this year.

Rod, we're honored that you chose to transfer to KU and made the contributions you made to the team's success. You were robbed by not being able to play in the final four, I was hoping they would call a technical against Memphis and get you a chance at the line or maybe an inbounds. Glad your surgery went well, hope they'll let you out for the parade and fieldhouse welcome. Thanks again, and good luck!

"I wouldn't change a thing about this weekend," Stewart, KU's senior from Seattle, said. "If I was told we'd lose if I was healthy and win if I was hurt, I'd rather be hurt," said Stewart, who fractured his right kneecap in a dunk drill at the Final Four shootaround Friday and will have surgery Wednesday.-----------------------Talk about the heart of a champion and a young man who knows the true meaning of the word TEAM.Get well soon, Rodrick. You will forever be a Jayhawk that KU can be proud of.

Rod should just look to Brandon if he wants to look at this as a blessing in disguise. He may still dream of playing professionally, but maybe going through rehab will open him up to other possibilities. He provided inspiration for the title, energy throughout the season, and contributed to a very memorable Senior Night.

I will always remember how well you played before Rush came back. I believe we would have been a very good team with you even if BRush had not been able to recover from his surgery. There is no shame in having to play behind the guys you played behind. Great teams always have one or two players like you who would play on most other teams than a champion. UCLA in its glory days always had one or two each year. You are very talented and need to keep improving and persevere until you get the right situation. Your father is not just blowing smoke at you. He IS very proud of you and he should be. So are we.
