Press Conferences & Post-Game Interviews
Bill Self's April 10 press conference
KU coach Bill Self met with the media Thursday afternoon, flanked by athletic director Lew Perkins and Chancellor Robert Hemenway, to announce his intentions to remain as the Jayhawks' head coach for years to come.
Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self, shown Thursday at a news conference at KU, has no plans to leave after winning the National Championship on Monday.
Kansas University men's basketball coach Bill Self officially announced at a news conference Thursday afternoon in Hadl Auditorium his intentions to remain with the Jayhawks.
Self was flanked by athletic director Lew Perkins and chancellor Robert Hemenway. Perkins said the details of Self's extension have yet to be hammered out, but an agreement has been made in principle.
"Today is not the day to talk about details," Perkins said. "Bill and I have agreed in principle that he will be our coach for years to come.
"He represents us with class, on and off the court, and I can't think of another coach I'd rather be sitting next to today."
Self said he visited with Oklahoma State and athletic director Mike Holder, but never had intentions of leaving.
"There was never serious interest on our part of leaving the University of Kansas, but there was serious interest in listening and hopefully helping Oklahoma State put their basketball position in the position they want it to be in," Self said. "We met, and (Holder) did an unbelievable job of striking the right chords and everything, and he did it in a way that provoked thought on why that would be a great fit for me and my family at this time. It wasn't done in a way many of you imagined it being done."
Self said Holder and OSU brought up the ideas of coming home, leading the Cowboys' program through a transition and taking it to heights the program hadn't seen in quite some time.
Coming home, leading program through transition, go to heights it hasn't seen in awhile
With details of Self's new deal still not finalized, he did say it's 'fair to say' he will get a nice raise and extension.
"The time is right for me and my family to be in Lawrence, Kansas, and hopefully lead this program to bigger and better things in the future," Self added.
Added Hemenway: ""Bill Self is exactly the right person for Kansas basketball, and w're delighted that he'll lead our basketball program for years to come."

Bill Self just said in a brief phone conversation with the Journal-World that he is staying at Kansas. Details will be revealed at a 4:30 p.m. press conference.
-----------------------
The Kansas University athletics department just announced that it will hold a 4:30 p.m. press conference regarding its men's basketball program.
The press conference is believed to be addressing the future of coach Bill Self. Three microphones have been set up at the table in the auditorium. The press conference will air live on Sunflower Broadband channel 6.
Self met with athletic director Lew Perkins earlier this afternoon, and is known to still be in the building.

Probably wouldn't have a press conference to announce he's going to OSU, right? That'd be OSU's privilege if they were fortunate enough to snag him. This sounds like GREAT news!

Based on everyone's reactions, I guess I'm probably being unnecessarily pessimistic, but I can't help but wonder if this should necessarily be interpreted as a good thing. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect him to leave, and I'd be shocked if he does, but aside from the fact that it'd make no sense to leave KU for OSU, and that Self seems to have indicated that he wants to stay, why should we assume that this announcement only bodes good tidings?

Good news ........
Supposedly according to the OSU blog website, a plane from Stillwater left last night and landed in Olathe. AD Mike Holder was supposed to be on the plane and it got back to Stillwater in the wee hours of the morning.
Bill probably got permission yesterday to hear them out and thus the plane flew up there. Like Bill said he at least owed it to his old school to hear them out and try to help them find another qualified coach, etc. .....
Nice try T. Boone Pickens ........ Go find a real football coach first to fill your new football stadium !

Agreed BannerforKirk. If Bill had decided to go to OSU, he would have a press conference at OSU to announce that he's accepted the position. It doesn't seem, from the reports availalbe, that he's even had the opportunity to talk to OSU yet (which is excellent news). So, one can only surmise that Bill is staying. And I couldn't be happier.

Self is only 45 years old, already has a Nat'l title and is on pace to become one of the greatest coaches of all-time based on wins alone. Some of those wins came in a major rebuilding mode so he should be given a lot of credit for that too. Thanks to Drue Jennings for the original hiring of Self during a dark time for KU basketball. Nice job by Lew in keeping him too.
This is in no way comparable to re-signing Billy Donovan at Florida. BD basically "lucked out" with a phenomenal recruiting class that will never happen again. Coach Self will now have the $$support$$ that he needs to create a Oregon-type atmosphere without actually sucking at basketball.

Chalmers isn't leaving. No one leaves unless they get a guaranteed contract (i.e. 1st round pick). A week ago Mario wasn't in the top 100 espn.com nba prospects, now he's 56. After all, instead of revolving around the Puke Blue Devils or the C-U-LAter Bruins or the Kentucky Mildcats, it should revolve around KU, around our-Self.
Although NASA once tried to orbit a satellite around Mark Mangino...

Hey Jaybate, it's over. He is not Roy Williams, he is honest and like the Man said himself, "believe".

On a more serious note, if Self ever again loses in the first round of the NCAA, or if a rebuilding project goes awry and lands us in the NIT or, God forbid, the CBI, I hope that those of us (I include myself in this - no pun intended) who are singing his praises now will be willing to defend him against the Self-haters. They've gone back into the woodwork for now, but don't think they won't reemerge at the slightest sign of trouble.

On cbssports.com They have a poll for who should be the preseason #1 and they don't have KU as a choice. Here are the options and percentages they are getting:
5% Duke
1% USC
32% North Carolina
2% Georgetown
6%UCLA
6% Purdue
or the top team isn't listed. which has gotten 48% of the vote.
GO and vote!

Strikewso don't forget Alex Galindo as well! I watched a few Gonzaga games this year and Micah Downs looked absolutely terrible. He airballed a few shots, etc. I remember he pouted and got madder than hell when he didn't get enough playing time in the McDonald's All-American game. We sure dodged a bullet on that one.
Yeah, I bet Juju is kicking himself for missing out on this. I'm sure he feels really great about averaging 3.2 points a game instead of being a national champion. Then again he has millions now.... Hopefully he can make it last because at this rate he'll be out of the league in a few years.

"Self is becoming KU's Dean Smith."
Excellent analogy, sums it up perfectly.
As for jaybate, your paranoia is getting pretty far out there. Self has made it abundantly clear that he's not going, and there's no reason whatsoever to doubt him.
