In the end, for Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self, it came down to a simple decision that there is no place like his new home.
Tony Sands’ son commits to KU
Kansas University’s football team received a oral commitment from Deshaun Sands, a 5-foot-9 running back out of Coconut Creek, Fla. Sands is the youngest son of former KU running back Tony Sands, one of the Jayhawks’ most decorated running backs ever.
Self staying at KU
Kansas University men’s basketball coach Bill Self officially announced at a news conference Thursday afternoon in Hadl Auditorium his intentions to remain with the Jayhawks. Self was flanked by athletic director Lew Perkins and chancellor Robert Hemenway. Perkins said the details of Self’s extension have yet to be hammered out, but an agreement has been made in principle.
Spring football game moved to Monday
The Kansas University athletics department announced Thursday that the Spring football game, originally scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium, will now be played Monday at 7 p.m.
Parade of champions planning progresses
Plans are in the works for Bill Self, Mario Chalmers and the rest of the NCAA Champion Kansas Jayhawks to ride down Massachusetts Street in the city’s first championship parade in two decades.Joining the team as parade participants Sunday will be athletics support staff, the pep band and members of the Spirit Squad. Unlike years past, there will be no room for public floats, good-luck charms or other folks who might want to join in.
After the game
When it looked as if KU was not going to win the game, I asked our Camp Commander if I could fly the KU flag over the Camp if they won. He said it was not likely for them to win, however if they did I could fly for the day. This is a few minutes after they won. The flag is flying over Camp Cropper in Baghdad Iraq, with baby Jay here.
Aftermath of victory can make you forget priorities
This basketball season has been a memorable year of reunions for my myself and family. It began last Thanksgiving when my sister spearheaded a trip to bring us all together for the first time in 18 years, meeting in Albuquerque, NM.
