Ryan Wood’s KU football notebook

One year ago

As expected, KU's coaches and players are studying last year's Kansas-Toledo game at the Glass Bowl in preparation for Saturday's game at Memorial Stadium. The Jayhawks imploded against the Rockets last year and fell, 37-31, in double overtime.

So coach Mark Mangino was asked Tuesday: Do you look at that film for technical reasons, emotional reasons, or both?

"It's all technical," Mangino responded. "Some things don't need to be said."

Harper healing

Cornerback Kendrick Harper continues to recover from an undisclosed injury suffered Aug. 3, and actually is getting limited work in practice.

"He's chomping at the bit," Mangino said. "He's a super kid and he can't wait to get back."

The guess is that Harper will return for the Kansas State game Oct. 6, though the Florida International game next week is an outside possibility.

"He's only going to add to the productivity of our secondary," Mangino said.

Players of the game

Left tackle Anthony Collins was named offensive player of the week by the coaching staff for the Southeastern Louisiana game. Linebacker Joe Mortensen and tackle James McClinton shared defensive honors, while kick-return specialist Marcus Herford was cited for special teams.

Rocket injuries

Toledo is hurting on defense - both statistically and medically.

Besides giving up 104 points in the first two games, Toledo has lost three starters to injury - free safety Tyrrell Herbert, cornerback Nigel Morris and defensive tackle Sean Williamson. Toledo coach Tom Amstutz didn't comment on their availability for Saturday's game, according to the Toledo Blade.

Another defender, cornerback Andre Redd, was injured last Saturday against Central Michigan and is not on the depth chart this week.

I'd hate to call this is a revenge match, but that's exactly what it is ...

That double OT loss to Toledo all but cost KU a bowl appearance, and as someone on this site has wrote, possibly was the slippery slope that led to late losses to Nebraska, Texas A&M, Okie State, Baylor, etc ...

I'd love nothing more than to see the Hawks hang another 50 points on someone!

I saw that the nation's leader only has like 6 touchdowns, any chance that Aqib Talib could get close to that, and he's a defender?!?

Don't think the players aren't ready for them! That loss on national tv was terrible, and they know that. I hope Toledo brings their KY jelly because they will get dealt with! Rock Chalk!!

Only in your wildest fantasy will that happen, Willie. The Hawks will be 5-0 after their visit to Manhatten and the pussycats will be 3-2 at best.

willie- "don't forget your power towel"

As for the KSU game, the only worry I have is the offense not being prepared for the hostile enviroment that will meet them, especially without a road game yet on the schedule.

The solution....
The entire Jayhawk student section show up against Florida International wearing purple, yes I said it....purple!! And we make as much freakin' noise as we can muster when Reeso goes under center! I mean its only FIU......If they can't beat Florida International when noise is thrown at you, than forget about ksu.

I know that sounds ridiculous, but I dont care what it takes....We are going to beat those CLOWNS!!!

Okay Willie you had your fun, break time is over. Those fries won't make themselves unless you're there.

This team is going to have to pile up a lot of points to get any recognition because each of their first five opponents are ranked below us. The mildcats are the highest ranked opponent at 42.

Stick to your own people willie. KU has beaten you 2 out of the last 3 lets not forget! And your close game at Auburn doesn't look to good anymore, and I wasn't impressed last week either. Hate to break it to ya, but the mildcats aren't what they used to be. I know it breaks your little hearts because you now have no sports your good at. Oh but you have womens hoops, good job!

Unfortunately for you this is 2007. Besides, youve got another problem right now. If I where you, Id be worried about Texas. Wont that suck when you guys are 2-3 and KU is 5-0. Bill Snyders decade is long gone and your powel towel aint gonna save you either.

Damnit guys, fun's over--looks like K-Suck people finally learned how to use the internet.

With cretin fans such as this foul blob

http://bigrednetwork.com/archives/200...

it is a wonder any of them have in their possession anything higher than a third grade education.

Oh, and in case any of you reading this attended K-Suck (going way out on a limb and assuming you can read), here is a definition of that hard word that begins with a 'c' I used to describe all of you

cretin:
A word associated to people whose lack of intelligence, manners/etiquette, appreciation, moral fibre and glaring social ineptitude (YOU), which in turn allows upstanding, educated, decent, moral, intelligent, socially respectful and hard working people (US) to perceive them as "degenerates" (owing to their inherent and blatantly obvious flaws).

Hey willie,
I know before the game, you have to hook your trailer - er, house up to a truck and take it into town to a car warsh, and then take your dog off a chain, and put your wallet on a chain ...

So just save your energy, big fella!

A few years ago?

Let's talk recent history: K-State comes to Lawrence after upsetting the shorthorns and has their butts handed to them by the Hawks, or how about two years before that when alleged Heisman candidate Darren Sproles "... with his fifth turnover in three games, muffed a punt."

and while i'm at it ...

Where's the rest of your lame mascot's body? That head is the most God-awful thing I've ever seen, we'll take up a collection at the next KU game and send you all some money to buy a PROPER mascot outfit!

/Jimmy_Dean is right folks, well not about wearing purple ... but for at least one quarter in the FIU game the student section needs to simulate the Mildcat crowd, BANJOS and 'shine jugs are optional!!!

klong (anonymous) says...

K-Suck fans have nothing!!! Just win one national championship at anything, besides those mean debate teams!, and we will talk. When you did win the Big 12 title in football, you would have thought you won the national title the way you guys made it out to be. KU wins the Big 12 title almost every year in basketball, but we expect more than just that. For K-Suck its the greatest thing ever. Your pathetic!!!!

But you are the greatest debate teams to ever lace 'em up!

yeah, what is the deal with having a mixed bird (red hawk, blue jay) as a mascot. I say we change it. How about the tigers? or somekind of cat. Everyone else has one of those.

This game has blow out written all over it. My only real concern is that we are healthy when conference play begins. If this game goes like the first two I'd like to see Mangino pull the starters at halftime and see what the reserves have.

Of course when I say, "I'd like to see", I'm speaking metaphorically since I have yet to actually see them play. Can not wait for conference play so I can actually watch this team.

I forget when I speak to a K-State grad, I'm speaking to a much better judge of "livestock" than myself ...

And while the Jayhawk may be imaginary, when is the last time anyone saw a purple Wildcat (the mix of KU's colors, that says something about envy and originality)

Let's take a look at some "real" Wildcat mascots ...

kentucky: http://www.uky.edu/Home/images/tradit...

arizona:
http://z.about.com/d/phoenix/1/0/A/L/...

northwestern:
http://www.univsvcs.northwestern.edu/...

villanova:
http://www.villanova.edu/enroll/asset...

There's a theme here, ALL of these have whole bodies!

Not too mention: New Hampshire, Davidson or Northern Michigan ...

You must be proud to have such an unusual mascot!

Now good night, willie and don't forget to brush your tooth!

7 year, if you want that picture you'll have to email me. I thought about posting it on a website somewhere but I think the good people of manhattan have suffered enough in the self esteem department. My wife saw it and thought it was cruel.

Didn't realize there were so many wildcat mascots. One would think after the first school adopted it the others would come up with something more original.

Ouch. That hurts willie. Here's some recent scores, tell me if you recognize any of them.

KU 39 ksu 20
KU 97- ksu 70
KU 71- ksu 62
KU 67- ksu 61

Granted these are only football and basketball and can't possibly stack up with volleyball.

While you're at, look up the all time records between KU and john deere community college and let me know who leads the series and by how much.

K-State would have to beat KU for twenty five years to even come close to making the series even at .500 ...
