Morris twins: basketball highlights

Basketball highlights from twins Marcus and Markieff Morris, highly-regarded prep school forwards from Philadelphia who recently announced their commitment to play with the Jayhawks in 2008.

Twins Marcus and Markieff Morris, a pair of highly-regarded prep school forwards from Philadelphia, have decided to play basketball at Kansas University.

Marcus is 6-7, 215 pounds, and Rivals.com's No. 37-rated player. Markieff is 6-8, 225, and rated 74th.

The twins, who visited KU on Oct. 12-13 and runnerup Villanova last weekend, actually signed with the University of Memphis last November as seniors at Philadelphia Prep Charter High School. They signed with the stipulation they would attend APEX Academies in New Jersey a year.

Marcus:

"I told coach, 'We're going to be Jayhawks,'" Marcus said. "He was very excited to hear that. Kansas is a great school. We're really looking forward to playing there. It was the playing time and winning tradition."

Added Markieff: "It was very hard to say no to Villanova. Jay Wright is a good guy. They play a fast paced game. It came down to everything, playing as a freshman, playin a lot as a freshman. Kansas is a great school."

They asked out of, and were released from, their Memphis letters of intent in early September, recently indicating they'd consider just three schools, KU, Nova and St. John's.

This gives KU five known commitments for the class of 2008. The twins join Roeland Park Miege guard Travis Releford, Chipola (Fla.) Junior College forward Mario Little and St. Patrick's (N.J.) forward Quintrell Thomas.

Nice choice Marcus and Markieff. You will never regret it. Great job Coach Self and staff. We are delighted to see a national recruiting focus and this should help in the future as well.

This class had me worried when Travis was the only commit for several weeks. But I should know by now that Self is a great recruiter and with this class now looking like another top 10 nationally, he is proving it again.

Welcome to KU fellas! You made the right choice.

Congrats to Self and the rest of the coaching staff for putting together another incredible class. Snagging Warren and Morgan would make this one of the best classes in the country.

Go Hawks!

Wow, you know it's something special when it makes me think about basketball instead of football (and what were the odds I would be saying that at any point in my lifetime?)! It is amazing how good Self is at recruiting.

Good stuff, welcome.. If Self recruited them they are probably pretty good.... Have we filled all the spots now?

we are going to sign 7 kids this year, so we still have 2 schollys available. Look for J'Mison Morgan and possibly Willie Warren. What a recruiting class that would be. Holy Crap! Anyways, I bet you all will agree that it certainly is a GREAT time to be a Jayhawk fan! Rock Chalk biatches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So its for sure Chalmers, Arthur, and Collins are leaving? Rush for sure? Will he be totally healed and ready for the league by end of next summer? What happens if some of these kids don't leave? I don't want any of them to go but what happens to those who've commited?

Not much of playing time problem ...

I have not seen their game but i'm assuming that Marcus would be able to play the Wing position.. I mean he's listed as a PF but that's Highschool, and @ 6' 7" i've heard that Marcus is pretty agile... Though i have no idea if he's a threat from the perimeter...

+ we shouldn't worry about Scholarships because Arthur is gone after this year... Fo sho!

And didn't they say in the past that Morningstar was willing to give up his Scholarship if needed?

if that's the case then pending Rush.. we're still in good condition

Jaybate - That was my thought also. Even if 7 go as CC indicates (good chance), that leaves one big man, but 3 already committed and another sure starter ahead of them possible. I'm not saying they won't have playing time, but it doesn't seem like a for sure thing for the #37 & 74 (?) recruits. If they were #3 & 7 - definitely, but they aren't, so I'll just wait to be proven wrong.

The KCStar was listing Marcus as the gem of this class, apparently forgetting about Travis. It will be a nice class, even as it stands today.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sherron left after this year too, and maybe Mario. But I imagine Self wouldn't want to fill all the scholarships with freshmen, so he'd either leave one for future years to balance out the classes or go after one or two juco players.

To address your question Casper... not that I'm the expert or anything... but I think Rush is for sure. That's whether he's ready or not. The main reason I say this is he's made it crystal clear he's not real enthused about taking classes.

For that reason, I believe he's going, even if it's not to the NBA. Out of Chalmers, Collins and Arthur... it's hard to predict how many or who, but you know at least one of them will. My thoughts are that Collins has to play all that much better being one of the shorter guards to have a real high draft status. Arthur doesn't even have to play spectacular to have pretty high stock with scouts, so my money is on him going after this year. I believe all 3 could go, but it's just more of an uphill battle for Sherron because of his height.
