Reader poll

With KU's loss to Missouri ending its regular season, which bowl do you think the 11-1 Jayhawks will wind up in?

  • Fiesta Bowl 54% 3311 votes
  • Orange Bowl 10% 638 votes
  • Sugar Bowl 3% 203 votes
  • Cotton Bowl 21% 1305 votes
  • Holiday Bowl 5% 337 votes
  • Gator Bowl 1% 84 votes
  • Elsewhere 3% 226 votes

6104 total votes.

New rankings

Kansas dropped to fifth in the BCS Standings after Saturday's 36-28 loss to Missouri, the new No. 1 team.

The Jayhawks, with a BCS average of 0.7918, are behind Missouri, West Virginia, Ohio State and Georgia. Big 12 Conference foe Oklahoma is No. 9.

Kansas (11-1) also dropped to seventh in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, fifth in the USA Today coaches poll and sixth in the Harris Interactive poll.

Injury report

With at least a month until Kansas plays again, there will be plenty of time for some banged-up players to get rest.

Cornerback Kendrick Harper and safety Patrick Resby have played sparingly in the last two weeks, while defensive tackle James McClinton and offensive tackle Anthony Collins played through obvious limps Saturday.

"At this point in time, we anticipate that all starters will be ready to go, according to the medical staff and without any surprises," KU coach Mark Mangino said Sunday. "There is at least one or two backup players, one for sure (who won't play)."

Mangino didn't name the backup but stressed that it's not Harper, who split starting assignments with Chris Harris this season.

"Kendrick Harper will be ready to play in the bowl game," Mangino said.

Lots of stops

Missouri's 93 offensive plays had a lot to do with it, but Kansas had six defenders Saturday register at least 12 tackles.

Safety Justin Thornton led the way with 16 stops and added two pass breakups. All three of KU's linebackers - Mike Rivera (14), Joe Mortensen (13) and James Holt (13) - had at least a dozen, as did cornerback Chris Harris (12) and safety Darrell Stuckey (12).

Mortensen currently leads the team with 98 tackles, and could become the first KU defender since Nick Reid to compile 100 tackles in a season.

I want the Cotton Bowl. There is no way I will root for Mizzery just so we can play in the Fiesta Bowl.

Regardless of where our bowl destination is, we have to win to avoid being viewed as a fluke or a product of a soft schedule in the eyes of most of the nation. I'd prefer the Fiesta because its in prime time, whereas the Cotton starts so early in the morning most of the western part of the country is still asleep when it kicks off. Either game would provide good exposure, but the Fiesta offers both more money and better exposure.

The day KU fans get this attitude is the day we become like K-State fans. K-state fans would rather live to see us lose than their team win. That is pathetic. I hate mizzou as much as anyone, but we need them to win to get to the best bowl possible. A chance at a BCS bowl, are you kidding??!! Think if someone would've said that at the beginning of the season! I'm gonna cheer to get KU the best possible outcome, not just to see mizzou lose. Rock Chalk, always.

I always want our team to win and I dont think rooting for mizzery to lose is "becoming like a K-State fan". Nothing pisses me off more than teams sitting and waiting for someone to lose so they can make the playoffs, or get a good bowl game. Kansas put their destiny in their own hands this year. If they won out they would win the National Championship. I hate all of these Georgia, LSU, Ohio St. fans who are sitting hoping for a loss so they can make the championship.

If Mizzery wins, more power to them and some people may think that that will make the Big XII look good, but it wont. Everyone will cry foul and complain that the Big XII has no competition. Mizzery is one of our rivals and we shouldnt ever root for them. If we need them to win to determine our fate then maybe we dont deserve it. I would love for KU to be in a BCS bowl, but we have already been on National TV more times than ever and the million dollars from last weekends game is more than before and will be added to any money made through a bowl.

KU is in great shape for next year. They need to keep building off of strong recruiting classes and become a perenial force in the North, then the XII, and then nationally. I would rather have a good team that competes for a championship every year then a "flash in the pan", as SEC fans want to call us.

I am happy that K-State lost to Fresno and isnt eligible. I heard enough negative comments during their 10 years to last me a lifetime. It is our turn and I dont feel sorry for our rivals and yes I always want them to lose.

I'm not rooting for Mizzou to win, just for OU to lose. There is a distinct difference, although the outcomes both would likely result in KU going to Fiesta Bowl.

We need to get a BCS bid any which way it occurs to give some validity to the season and finish with a strong win. We are setup well for next year, but this year isn't over yet.

Hmm.. Cotton Bowl Pays 3 million and is played early on Fox, and has to compete with three other games for viewers, so not too much exposure. BCS bowl pays 17 million and gets played in primetime for the whole country to see.

I'm thinking I would rather be in the BCS game.
Thats whats best for the program. Maybe more people should think of whats best for the program.

Isn't it great that we can have this discussion?

Rooting for OU to lose is the same as rooting for mizzery to win. I have no problem rooting for OU to win because they arent our rival, yet.

On the other hand, if the 17 million makes it so we can get out of Arrowhead after this next year and return to Memorial for all of our "home" games then I guess I will hope for that.

I have full confidence that we will win any bowl that we go to but what happens if we go to the Fiesta and lose, with everybody watching. Then we become KSU and have good regular seasons with great bowl games attached to a loss. After a while people get tired of it and recruits stop seeing all of the wins and just the fact that you lost your bowl game.

I am a proponent of easing into things. Last year we fought to become bowl eligible and didnt even make a bowl. Shouldnt we get used to playing in bowl games before we play in one of the 6 biggest games?

I'm going to hold my nose and look the other way during the B12 championship game.

If Mizzou should play in the NC game I hope they lose in a most excrutiating way.

A couple of scenarios, it's a tough close game but all Misery has to do is take a knee to win. Instead, Chase Daniel runs around until the clock ticks off then, thinking the game is over, hands the ball to a WV defender who shakes his hand then runs for the winning touchdown.

Or down by five with time for one last play, Mizzou runs a trick play, Chase races untouched down the sideline, then trips and falls on the three yard line.

I think that if this were any other year. I would be happy for a lesser bowl game. However, I think that this team has the talent to beat just about anyone in the country. So, the bigger the bowl the better. No need to ease into it.

I also think that playing the game at Arrowhead may have prepared the team for a bigger stage. Now maybe they won't be awestruck and take 2+ quarters to to get going.

wcormode (William Cormode) says...

I dont want an easy way out. It is kind of like those commercials from Liberty Mutual I think, they ask the question on whether you want a portfolio that does great now but can die out fast or do you want something that keeps a steady pace and outperforms over time. Anyone can shoot for the moon and try to get it all in one year but the market could fall (IE losing in a big game) that would be devastating for the programs if it is a big loss (which I dont think it would be).

There was an interview with one of the players and I can not think of who it was but he was asked about his decision to come to Kansas and he said "KANSAS, who wants to come to kansas. DO they even win any games? Why would anyone want to come to kansas?" This attitude is out there almost everywhere even as we sit at #5. One of the stats flashed on the screen every year is bowl records. I would rather recruits see a good record and mid range bowls than to see bad records and huge bowl games.

Regardless of whether we make the BCS as one of two Big 12 or if Missouri and Oklahoman make it, the money will be the same. I understood all bowl money is split evenly among the conference teams. I want as big a stage as possible for the 'Hawks but I can't bear to see Missouri (or K-State for that matter) win a national championship. I'll be in Cali for the USC basketball game and I will do my best to ignore this game and take whichever outcome happens. As far as I'm concerned, I'll be happy and disgusted by either outcome. Sucks to have to end the regular season this way, but it is what it is. Next year can't get hear soon enough.

seattlehawk_78 (anonymous) says...

This is unchartered territory for KU fans. For the first time ever the Tigers are playing for something. We as KU fans have an obligation to root for their failure. Trust me, when the situation is reversed they reciprocate. In fact, for a Mizzou fan the success of their "basketball" season is predicated on only two games. The first being the game we play in Columbia and the second is any game in the tournament in which we lose. When that happens they are happy. They have difficulty making it to the dance and have never been close to a final four which leaves them nothing else to root for. Besides, it really doesn't matter who we root for. It's not like it will make a difference.

Is it unrealistic to think that a 1 loss KU will get a BCS bid over a 2 loss OU & 2 loss MU?

November 26, 2007 at 12:03 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

killabees (anonymous) says...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the money that all Big XII teams make from bowls split amongst the conference? So a bigger payday for OU in a BCS bowl, give KU as much money as if it were KU there instead.

Is that correct? I hear all this talk of bigger payouts, but I don't know if that actually helps us.

November 26, 2007 at 12:21 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

wcormode (William Cormode) says...

That all sounds right. So someone will get the 17 million from the Fiesta and someone will get the 3 from the Cotton and we will all share it. The only difference is exposure. KU fans will be able to buy the tickets to fill the Cotton bowl and make it a semi home game. The Fiesta Bowl will be packed to the brim with ASU fans and we can only hope to silence them.

Those of you arguing that you'd rather have the hawks play in non-BCS bowls are sounding like those bowls would be automatic wins or something. I would like to think that we as fans would like for the 'Hawks to make the best bowl possible, and right now that looks like the Fiesta Bowl. Besides, if you wanted Mizzou to fall on their face, wouldn't you want it to be in the National Championship Game when everybody's watching? I don't know, I just think that us winning our last game in a BCS Bowl and them falling flat on their faces to end the year sounds good. Of course, the flaw in my thinking is that there would be the chance that Mizzou actually wins the NC, in which case I would vomit all over myself.

bmcmich1 (anonymous) says...

What I'm trying to say is that there is no guarantee that we lose a BCS Bowl and no guarantee that we win a non-BCS Bowl. Knowing that, wouldn't you rather end up in the best one possible? I think Fiesta Bowl sounds a helluva lot better than Cotton Bowl.

November 26, 2007 at 12:38 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

wcormode (William Cormode) says...

I dont think it would be automatic but more likely than the BCS game. I think we could win the BCS game but it has more risk. There is the possiblity however that Mizzery loses to OU by so many points that the fall below KU and KU still gets to go to the Fiesta. Just having Mizzery make the NC would make me vomit all over myself. They would be even more insufferable for years to come.

They may have had the sign that said "KU a tradition since september" but a sign about them would say "Mizzery a tradition because they suck at everything else"

I absolutely want the best possible scenario for KU but I believe the best possible scenario for KU football is for their most hated rival to lose. Ask Michigan fans if its in their best interest for Ohio State to win. Or, Alabama-Auburn, Duke-North Carolina, etc. It is not in anyones best interest for their chief rival to win. While your at it, ask Mizzou fans if they want KU to win a national title in basketball this season.

Jayhawk 86, I am in the same boat you are in. A BCS bowl is better for the program. I won't repeat what I posted on the basketball notes page, but I will cheer for an OU loss (I was at KU in '88 when we lost to them three times but beat them in the fourth game so yea, they too are a rival). And our strength of schedule increases with an OU loss, just as it did with an A&M win over TX. I might not be able to cheer for MU, but I will always cheer for what's best at KU.

As far as the arguments posted for others cheering for losses to increase their own programs standings, that is the way the system is set up. Perhaps the nation will look at KU as a fluke (and Hawaii) and finally move in the direction for a football playoff. But until then, I will cheer for anything that improves KU's standing.

One of the reasons I would like to see us in a BCS bowl is for the exposure. It took us sooo long to get into the rankings this year because nobody thought we were any good to begin with. If we win a big game on a big stage, I think that will help set us up better for next year. We could start the season ranked and be respected.

Nobody questioned Ohio State's strength of schedule even though ooc they played Akron, Youngstown State, Kent and Washington. The reason for this is because OSU started out ranked and people expected them to be good regardless of how weak their schedule was.

We are going to have a very strong schedule next year, and it would be nice to start out ranked.

If OU wins they get the Fiesta Bowl as Big XII champs. That means MU gets the BCS at-large. KU might get one also (seems there may not be enough qualified teams to limit each BCS conf to just 2 teams per the rules) but unlikely.

I want the best bowl for KU for the exposure and recruiting boost. I like the idea of MU getting pounded by WVU in prime time, but that hurts KU by vindicating the press's "ain't played nobody" theme. So, I hope MU wins it all (man, did THAT hurt to type).

As for the Fiesta bowl...not sure they'd pick ASU. One reason the bowls were created was to bring tourists to town. Locals may buy tickets but they don't fill hotel rooms. That said, yes, the Orange Bowl picked Miami on more than one occasion, but I think that was to set up a NC matchup more so than anything else.

Matt95- I see your reasoning but the reason "A" Ohio State Univ and Georgia are ranked as they are is because of the conferences to which they belong. Based upon history, the voters want Big East, SEC of Big 10, or another Big Name school; KU is none of those things. The voters have even put USC into the mix as best they could considering their record.

summers nailed it, it really doesn't matter at this point who you want to win or lose. If Mangino has taught his team anything, it is that you control the things that you can control. If you take care of your business, the rest will all come with it.

At this point, the part that we can control as fans is to buy as many tickets to whichever bowl game selects us, and pack the stands with screaming Jayhawk fans.

I've said before that I will never root for Missouri, and I hold to that. I will never be happy for them to succeed in anything and I feel perfectly comfortable saying that because I know that my opinion really doesn't effect the outcome of any of MU's remaining games.

If they win, I will be happy for KU going to a BCS game, and I will still know that they are proud to have fought for slavery.

If they lose, I will be happy that they lost and yell my butt off at whatever bowl selects us.

From this perspective, it's a win/win.

But I think Nebraska went from 4 to 2 that year, not 5 to 2, and there was no idle Georgia to leap. I just don't see how we get over Georgia unless a thousand zany things happen our way (i.e., a miracle).
