KU volleyball sweeps Raiders
The Kansas volleyball team was in action tonight in Lubbock for more than likely Emily Brown and Caitlin Mahoney's last match.
Lubbock, Texas Kansas University's volleyball team ended its season on a high note Wednesday, winning a three-game match at Texas Tech.
KU swept the Red Raiders 30-28, 30-21 and 30-23 and finished with a 13-17 overall record and a 6-14 mark in Big 12 play. Texas Tech fell to 7-21 on the season and 1-18 in conference matches.
Senior Caitlin Mahoney had 11 kills, with a team-best .625 hitting efficiency, and four assists to lead KU. Fellow senior Emily Brown had 10 kills to go with a team-high 26 assists and 13 digs, good for her ninth triple-double of the season.
Freshman Jenna Kaiser led the team with 13 kills. Savannah Noyes added nine kills, hitting at a .500 clip. Katie Martincich notched 17 assists, and Melissa Manda added 11 digs in the Jayhawks' final match.
Game one was tight until game point. As Kansas trailed, 24-22, the Jayhawks went on a five-point run to take a 27-24 advantage over the Red Raiders, but Texas Tech answered back with four of the next five points to tie the game at 28. Back-to-back kills by Noyes and Garlington ended the Raiders' run and gave KU a 30-28 victory.
In the second game, Garlington served for eight straight points including three aces to help the Jayhawks to a seven-point lead at 24-17. Texas Tech was only able to grab four more points the rest of the way, as KU rolled to a 30-21 win.
Kansas opened the third game with a 5-1 run and never slowed down on the way to a 30-23 victory. Garlington again served eight straight points to help KU take a commanding 16-5 lead. Mahoney ended her career as a Jayhawk with a kill for match point.
