KU football player to make court appearance

Dezmon Briscoe, a Kansas University freshman football player and one of the Jayhawks' leading receivers, will appear in court at the end of the month on charges of theft by deception, less than $1,000.

According to court filings last week, Briscoe, of Dallas, tried to steal merchandise from Wal-Mart, 3300 Iowa. The district attorney's office, citing the case's juvenile status, had no comment.

Briscoe is being charged as a juvenile because the theft is alleged to have occurred in June before Briscoe - who was in Lawrence preparing for the football season - turned 18. Many KU athletes come to Lawrence during the summer to take part in the athletic department's summer bridge program, which helps athletes adjust to the college academic and athletic environment.

Neither Briscoe nor the athletic department had any comment Wednesday afternoon. Jim Marchiony, associate athletic director, did say the department has been aware of the alleged incident since June.

KU coach Mark Mangino, asked about the incident after practice Wednesday night, said "I have no comment. I handle all personnel issues internally."

Briscoe has picked up seven touchdowns and 322 yards in nine games this season. His touchdowns lead the undefeated Jayhawks.

Briscoe is scheduled to appear at 4 p.m. Nov. 29 in Douglas County District Court. That would be after that last game of KU's regular season but before a possible Big 12 Championship game or bowl appearance.

Athletic department idiom ion athletes social news "no news is good news"!

At least he did not assault anyone, but his moves must have gotten better as season progressed with 7 TDs and could not even make it out of Wal-Mart!

Wal-Mart plays good "D"!

We need to give this kid a second chance. My guess is he has learned from his mistake and knows what he risks throwing away if he does it again.

Hang in there, Dezmon.

The fact that he is playing this year shows that we have given him a second chance. I imagine Mangino punished him this summer. Now if the fans on this board will just give him a second chance...

Why is this even in the news? The kid was a juvenile when it happened. Thought this paper had a policy of not printing info about juvenile offenses. Kids do dumb things. Let's move on and give him a break.

Dezmon, you have too much going for you to screw up like this! Man up and face the music and you will be a better person in the long run! Just don't screw-up and do something this stupid again! Don't become the next C.J. Giles!

Give him a second chance. I'm sure Mangino has already taken care of this over the summer.

Meanwhile, did you see this article on ESPN's Bottom 10 College Football teams? Rather than the Nebraska "N", they have a Jayhawk trampling all over a pile of corn.

This is so embarrassing. This is the worst news of the season so far. I hope the staff keeps this kid on a real tight leash. We arent going through another Giles or Randle.
