Jayhawk soccer ousted by OSU

— Oklahoma State scored three goals in a four-minute span in the first half to upend Kansas University, 3-0, in the first round of the Big 12 Soccer Championship on Wednesday at Blossom Soccer Stadium.

Kansas, which ended its season 7-10-4, was undefeated in its final five regular-season matches, but the Jayhawks quickly fell behind the Cowgirls (13-5-2).

Junior Yolanda Odenyo gave OSU a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute with a shot off a failed clear from 25 yards out that beat the goalkeeper to the near post.

It was her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

OSU took a 2-0 lead on another Kansas mistake in the box. Siera Strawser finished a ball deep in the box after the KU defense deflected a cross from the near side.

The Cowgirls scored their third goal when Strawser again buried a cross from Kasey Langdon from the far side of the box. It marked the most goals KU had given up in a contest since Sept. 30 at Texas A&M.

OSU took 17 shots to 10 for KU. Both teams had a handful of good chances. Senior goalkeeper Colleen Quinn made four saves for KU.

Great job coach. You and your staff have let the girls down the entire season so this is a fitting end. They have done a tremendous job of overcoming the coaching staff all year. It was just too much last night.

Hey Lew, it's time for a change. No NCAA for 4 or 5 years now. Too much talent for that. Get him out.

hawk4evr.......Wow, that's a lot of venom! Look, I have seen KU play this year and they really do NOT have "too much talent", frankly.

In fact, I went to the OSU game in Lawrence. OSU's players were bigger and must faster than KU's girls. OSU's midfielder Odenyo is about 6'1 and built like a truck. Watching her match up against Jessica Bush at 5'2 was almost comical. It was almost like watching a high school team play a college team. KU played a whale of a game that day just to tie. There may be some talent there and some toughness, but this is not a team that should expect to go to the NCAA tournament.

Now if you want to get on Coach Francis for his recruiting, maybe you have a gripe. Keep in mind, KU has about 10 freshmen on this team. If they can develop them physically--stronger and faster--they may blossom in the next couple of years.

The KU Women's Soccer program was the only bright light in the whole half of the Woman's athletic Department.

Coach Francis had a very tough schedule and very inexperienced team. This is NOT a good combination as the teamdid NOT respond to the challenge.

The jury is still out on the team and the coach. Another year like this year and Lew will be looking for a new coach.

KU has the WORST woman's programs in the Big XII and they are NOT getting any better under Lew.

FlaHawk.....You're right about KU having poor women's programs. You get what you pay for, and unfortunately, with the football program not being a huge revenue generator there's just not enough money to buy the kind of coaching and facilities required to get the best athletes.

Now, I think they're paying Bonnie a pretty good chunk and so far the results have been disappointing. You'd think if you can develop a program at VT, you could do it at KU.

As for other programs......The volleyball venue is somewhat of a joke. I thougt it was only in high school that you had to worry about the ball hitting the ceiling, but any top tier recruit that saw the home of the volleyball Jayhawks would probably rather play at KSU or NU or MU. The softball field seems like an OK venue. Other than that, I'm not familiar enough to tell you the problems.

But I do know that the top women's programs are primarily at places that either have tons of money (UT, NU) or happen to have a great coach (UConn in women's basketball comes to mind).

Bottom line, until KU's football program becomes a consistent revenue generator, I think you'll see KU's womens programs continue to lag. But still, they shouldn't consistently be at the bottom of the league because other places face the same challenges with football revenue.

bonnie is just now getting to the point where she actually has "her" players... you have to give a coach at least 3 or 4 years to give you results...
and considering that bonnie took us to the post season (which hadn't been done in the previous 5+ seasons) I would lay off of her. I think the team she is putting on the floor this season will be a difference maker in the big XII.

there was that magical year maybe 5 years ago that our womens volleyball and soccer teams both made the NCAA's, and since then both have been a disappointment... hopefully we can get the ship righted, but also remember that those texas schools (namely UT) have absolutely tremendous women's sports programs, so battling against them is tough...
