Keegan: Jayhawks football fans, too

Hawks pound PSU, 94-59

Plenty of experience returned to the hardwood this evening for Bill Self and the Kansas men. Kevin Romary has post-game highlights.

B-Mac ready for Huskers

Last week Kansas runningback Brandon McAnderson racked up 183 yards and 2 touchdowns against Texas A&M. This weekend B-Mac comes home to face the worst rushing defense in the nation.

The guys with Kansas on their chests defeated the team with red jerseys by 35 points.

Wouldn't you love to read that identical sentence in Sunday's paper?

It's a great deal tougher to hammer a traditional football powerhouse by 35 points than it is a Division II basketball team, but at least the football team will have the backing of a loud, capacity crowd Saturday when a struggling Nebraska team visits Memorial Stadium on Saturday morning.

The basketball players will be among the masses.

"Homecoming, it'll be exciting," senior point guard Russell Robinson said of the 11 a.m. kickoff. "I'll be there cheering them on. I've been to every home game except the blowout game. I drove around and I couldn't find parking."

Robinson couldn't remember which blowout that was, just as several weeks from now many won't remember that it was Pittsburg State that Kansas beat, 94-59, Thursday night in Allen Fieldhouse.

It doesn't matter. The nonconference season served its purpose for the football team, just as the exhibition opener did for the basketball team. In it, the Jayhawks showed why KU is the only school with both its football and basketball programs ranked in the nation's top 10.

"I love it," Robinson said of the football team. "I think they're doing a great job. They're staying humble, is the biggest thing I've noticed. They're not getting full of themselves, but at the same time are playing with a lot of confidence."

The most common favorite football player mentioned by the basketball players was junior left tackle Anthony Collins.

"I'm real cool with him," Robinson said. "I like what he does. The offensive line, they've got a tough job. They've got to protect the quarterback. Aqib (Talib) is pretty good, obviously, and I like (Todd) Reesing. He's done a great job of coming in and leading the team."

Robinson said he and Collins played against each other in an AAU basketball tournament.

"My team beat his team by about 30 points," Robinson said. "Blew 'em out. I didn't remember it, then he started talking about it and I was like, 'Oh yeah, now I remember.' We've played at the Rec a lot. He can jump for a big guy. He can dunk, which is pretty good for a guy his size."

Robinson said fear of injury kept him from playing football. His speed, agility and confident playing style suggest he would have been a good cornerback.

Sherron Collins, a superstar receiver and defensive back for Crane Tech in Chicago, was asked if a KU player's style reminded him of himself as a football player.

"A little bit," he said. "I've got to go with Aqib. I played both sides of the ball like he does. He's a great player."

The Rod Stewart without the mullet called Anthony Collins, "One of my closest friends. I know all the football players. I always go to the games. Everyone on the team is a fan of the football team. I'm supporting them all the way. I hope they go all the way. I think they could. The way they're playing, I can't really see too many teams beating them."

It was Collins who before the season started predicted "10 or 11 wins" and was the first to say he couldn't see too many teams being able to beat the Jayhawks. So far, so perfect, Anthony.

They better not, prairie rattler. It shouldn't be a goalpost affair if we beat a 4-5 team we are favored to beat by 19.

If that happens we'll be the emarrasment of the country. It will just prove to everyone we don't belong and don't have a fan base that knows anything.

you are right on that one NREBNE....our fan base doesn't know anything about football. i've been saying that since 2000 when I got here. the students are idiots and i'm shocked they didn't rush the field when we beat baylor last week.

hopefully someone has also told them they're stupid for doing the "rip his f***ing head off" chant everytime we kick off. they sound like idiots, which is what most of them are.

I agree that nobody needs to tear the goal posts down. We are the top 10 team now, and we already did it the last time we beat them.

I disagree that our fan base doesn't know football. I know that they have been slow to come around to the idea of cheering and when to cheer, when to boo. But I think that the majority knows football pretty well. Most of the people in the stands are KC Chiefs fans who are known to be some of the smartest fans in football. Football smarts anyway.

Top 10? Hell, wouldn't it be classier if we, I don't know, maybe, possibly, Never Tore Them Down.

Top 10 or not. Fans that tear down goal posts always look like morons to the rest of the country.

Thanks for the reminder, plastic. Tebow is catching our guy...

There is no way the goal posts should come down on Saturday. The only fans that do that when their team is favored by as much are the miscreants over in Columbia.

I'd like to amend Jacobpaul's statement and say that fans that tear down goalposts -most of the time- look like morons to the rest of the country. There are certain situations that I believe are totally fine for tearing them down, such as when Kentucky beat LSU. Fine.

Tomorrow, however, is NOT. I repeat, NOT one of those situations.

Tomorrow is a day to get a win, high five your friends in the stands and adjourn to the bar for a few brews. There should be no charging of the field and no tearing down of goalposts. If we want the nation to respect us as an up and coming program, we have to act like we are supposed to win this type of game.

38-13, Hawks.

Do not tear down the goalposts if we win. I can't even believe that was even suggested.

Top 10 programs don't tear goal posts down.

19 point home favorites don't tear down goal posts.

1st place league teams playing 5th place league teams do not tear down goal posts.

What are these students thinking?

Also, since I'm agitated, I really hope the Wine & Cheese fans have learned how and when to cheer correctly. This is becoming embarrassing.

Go Hawks. All better now.

Self and Mangino deserve equal credit for instilling such a sense of humility in their players. Having both teams in the top 10 nationally will establish Kansas as a great athletics school, not just a great basketball school, and every team will benefit from that. Sending recrits to a football game will be one more asset Self and other coaches can use to show what a great school this is for every sport. Also, let's save tearing down the goalposts for Arrowhead.

Even though the students havent torn down any goalpost this year, they have found other ways to get the university national exposure. With thier unoriginal and unintelligent chant. Its amazing that even though a huge chunk of them only stay for the first half of the game, they are still able to figure out how to embarrass themselves on a national level. Before the game against Southeast Louisiana, magnetic schedules were handed out to the fans. Students got bored during the 2d Qtr and started throwing the schedules on the field and on the students closest to the field. Really intelligent. They better figure out that their football team is one of the best in the country and start acting like it if they are going to come to the stadium. Obviously, Im not talking to all the students. Many of them do a great job supporting the team.

From the USA article -
Chris Hansen, American Civil Liberties Union national staff lawyer, said the language isn't obscene.

Just what you'd expect from the ACLU. It's not obscene, just profane.

And just what you'd expect at Colorado - "People grow to accept that it's part of the college football experience. It comes with the territory."

It looks like maybe Boston University had a good idea when they banned cursing from its hockey arena in 2006, then took away ticket privileges for nearly 20 students that season for their language. "I can't tell you it's perfect," athletics director Mike Lynch said. "But the behavior in the stands has gotten a lot better."

Some might see it as being counterproductive when you are trying to build attendance @ FB games and support for the program. Let a few people loose season ticket priviledges to all university events for a year, and behavior will change.

I'd say rescinding season ticket privileges is like getting rid of the problem child player from the team, even if he/she is one of the best players, because their attitude ultimately comprimises the efforts of the whole team

Interesting Fabio. Even though Missouri has the reputation for being crude and classless it is KU they are calling out and there is no mention of Missouri.

I've always liked tearing down the goal posts and carting them off to Potter but since we stopped the streak two years ago it's hard to justify. Unless we tore them down after every game, even the cupcakes that's different.

Not bad JC. Maybe change it from Mizzou to Mizwho. Or, just plain MizWHO??? Whatever they use it needs to be short and it seems the really clever slogans are too long.
