The players who make up Mark Mangino's sixth football team at Kansas University will head back to work Monday, intent on closing the gap on upper-division Big 12 teams.
The workouts are "optional." It always pays to remind new players what that really means: If they don't show up for all of them and don't work as if their scholarships depend on it, Mangino has the option to leave them on the bench.
They'll work hard, all right. That never has been a problem under Mangino, an organized disciplinarian. By now, the progress the program has made under the former assistant to Bill Snyder at Kansas State and Bob Stoops at Oklahoma can be measured in simple terms: Wins and losses.
Can Mangino's sixth team accomplish what no previous Kansas football squad has in 11 tries? Can the Jayhawks break even in the eight games against Big 12 competition? If the answer is yes, the program has made legitimate, measurable strides.
In his only season at the helm after the Big 12 added the four Texas schools, Glen Mason went 2-6 in conference play. Terry Allen's records were 3-5, 1-7, 3-5, 2-6 and 1-7, for a total of 10-30. Mangino's records have been 0-8, 3-5, 2-6, 3-5, 3-5, for an 11-29 total.
Mangino went 0-8 with the players and culture left him by Allen. Mangino has been here long enough to put his own stamp on things. All the remaining players are his recruits. The program is marketed aggressively. The crowds have grown. Now the question is, can Kansas win four of these eight: at Kansas State, Baylor, at Colorado, at Texas A&M, Nebraska, at Oklahoma State, Iowa State and vs. Missouri at Arrowhead Stadium?
In an attempt to upgrade the caliber of athletes on board, Mangino initially recruited too many junior college players, which indirectly ran the program into trouble with the NCAA. In the area of recruiting players from two-year schools, the quantity has gone way down, the quality up.
The key to this season could be the holes plugged by JC recruits. Only three new ones joined the team, but they all experienced encouraging springs and are expected to play key roles. Cornerback Kendrick Harper and safety Patrick Resby should make the secondary better. Guard Chet Hartley, all 315 pounds of him, will be counted on to help an offensive line that is anchored by NFL prospect Anthony Collins at left tackle, but is shy on proven Big 12 blockers. On paper, the O-line is the team's biggest cause for concern, especially given Kerry Meier's penchant for throwing interceptions facing pressure and Todd Reesing's tendency to fumble.
Defensively, the depth of the line also is a concern, though coordinator Bill Young is so clever he could come up with ways to use packages that make depth at linebacker mask lack of it up front.
Leadership shouldn't be an issue, given the presence of tight end Derek Fine, running back Brandon McAnderson, defensive tackle James McClinton, and safety Darrell Stuckey.
Al Davis, czar of the Oakland Raiders all these decades, would give Mangino's KU teams passing grades in following two of his three key sayings: "Commitment to Excellence," and "Pride and Poise."
Two down, one to go. The toughest one.
"Just win, baby!"

OK, no more Raider-based analogies Keegan. The program is under enough pressure and stress as it is...
I guess I never realized how bad our conference record has been over the last 15 years. Makes me sick! I know we're a basketball school and the program is improving, but come on!

Yeah, the football record has been pretty lousy. I hope they can do something to turn this baby around. I love going to games at Memorial stadium and (fortunately) have been to the ones where the Jayhawks won (how does that happen?).
Keep up the good work, team!

I almost wonder if we should try a 3-4 scheme, with Mike Rivera and Joe Mortensen competing for the middle backer spot, this way they can both play side by side. Also KU has always seemed to have trouble recruiting DT's. That would help with our depth issues on the DL and would allow Rivera to play instead of waste his talents on the bench!

JayCeph,
It sounds like you need to join the ranks of us KU football season ticket holders! We can use all of the help we can get. Plus like you said, the games are a blast.

Jimmy Dean-that could be a good way to utilize our strength at linebacker and cover our weakness elsewhere, good thinking.
JayCeph- txrockchalk is right. There will never be a better time to become a season ticket holder than right now. Its gonna be a great season. My family is counting down the days.

This is a breakout year if 2 things happen:
1. Pass rush. Onyegbule?
2. QB play. Yes, as a 45 year KU football sufferer, I'm getting sick of this. We haven't had high-quality QB play here since Dave Jaynes (well, maybe Seurer).
We beat KSuck in Mancrappy, Baylor and ISU. The 4th win will be tough.

Great post prairie dog, love the Jaynes and Seurer reference. I was a fan of Chip Hilleary, too--he wasn't the flashiest guy, but he got the job done. Also, Mark Williams led arguably the best team we've had in the last quarter century. And,if it wasn't for injury and a shortened career with us due to him being a transfer, Bill Whittemore would probably go down as one of the best we've had. His style of play was fantastic--so gritty--he was fun to watch. But those are all guys that true KU Football fans remember--I see your point in that most of the Nation probably doesn't remember them. Hell, even Indiana had Antwaan Randle-El. More recently, Iowa State had Senneca Wallace. Why can't WE have someone like that?? Hopefully we will in either Meier or Reesing. Oh, and that 4th win? I like us getting two in a row against the Buffs--it's going to be tough to do in Boulder, but they are still searching for an identity under Hawkins and in my opinion therefore ripe for the pickin. I mean come on, Mangino's road curse has GOTTA change for the better at some point!! Why not in '07?
Oh, and JayCeph--get some season tix, man--join the party!

prariedog- Im feelin pretty optimistic about a 4th win. Though its not impossible, Im gonna concede a loss in College Station. However, I like our chances at O-State, and Boulder. Arrowhead is a toss up as of right now. But where I really like getting the 4th win is when Nebraska comes to Lawrence.
That is by far the biggest game on the home slate and Nebraska will get our best. I expect the same type of atmosphere we saw with KU/KSU last year and the Nebraska game in '05. Dont forget that the last 3 years we have played Nebraska we have outscored them 80-68. I dont see us losing that one.

I only have good things to say about these posts today. I like that I am actually seeing some optimism from our fans instead of the usual complaints. I understand that we still are not the best team in the big 12, but at some point I was hoping that people would start seeing the light that has been shinning on our program ever since Mangino got here. It sounds like a good portion of people are finally starting to come around. Now it's just up to Mangino to make sure that he proves us right for believing in him.

the football program ...
is-so-close-to-turning-the-corner!!!
but this has got be a make or break season for Mangino this year ...
last year after: you took Nebraska into overtime on the road, after being down HUGE early ... you blow two big leads at home to A&M and Okie State, and don't even get me started on Baylor (I was there, my one big road trip for the season)
sadly we aren't renewing season tickets this year, first time in three seasons, since I moved back to Kansas ... I'm starting grad school (weekends only) and the wee ones are also demanding more time from us.
I'll defintely be at Arrowhead for the Border WAR and I'm trying to get to College Station for the last stop on my Big XII stadia tour ...
beak 'em, hawks!!!
/our family already has plans to travel to Tampa for the USF game in 2008!

fabio,
believe me, I'VE been outnumbered ... I was also at the Northwestern game where our fans caused not one, but TWO falsestart penalties on the opposing QB!!!
I roadtripped to the Fort Worth Bowl, when we passed thru OKC during rush hour - it was Kansas plates and Jayhawk stickers as far as the eye could see!!!
What thrills me about the trip to College Station, is that it is supposed to be the Allen Fieldhouse of football. The Friday night yell practices, the swaying stadium, the collie mascot cemetery (kinda creepy, but cool) ...
I think it is a fitting final stop for my tour of Big XII venues, I went to Stillwater in the mid-90s, pre-Gaylord upgrade, not sure if I'll make it this season ...

Sevenyear-
Did you mean Pickens upgrade in Stillwater? Gaylord is Norman...Speaking of Gaylord, though, watched a game there a couple years back where we kept it tight in the first half and scared the boomer sooners half to death. Norman itself is pretty blah in my opinion, but watching a game there was pretty cool.
Also, how about stinkin' Lincoln on gameday? Two things I saw there that I've never seen before: 1)an entire city (and most likely an entire state as well) shut down for a gameday, and 2)probably 90% of America's Recreational Vehicles in one place.
All that said, you're probably right--I bet College Station trumps all other venues in the Big XII. I might just have to venture down there if I've got enough green to do so.

d'oh!
i meant pickens at Okie State, but said gaylord.
i too was at that game in norman, when they welcomed back our couch at "Mike" Mangino on the jumbotron!
that was great for a half, those Sooner fans were so quiet at one point - if only we had had a little more offense!
***
lincoln is incredible on gameday, and in the stadium, honestly the only place (sports or otherwise) where i got claustrophobic outside! (i was there three seasons ago, not last year)
i'm hoping there's a good Jayhawk contingent at A&M, i'm looking forward to the overall experience as much as the possibility of a win ...
/in Waco, their students run onto the field BEFORE the game starts ... weird!
//went to Austin, got interviewed on their student radio station during the pre-game, that was cool!!
///I took a Greyhound bus to Lubbock - to tell the whole story about that trip properly takes about an hour!!!

Ha! Ya, I'm sure that Lubbock trip was a real jewel...
No worries on mixing up Pickens and Gaylord--trust me it's easy to confuse one Oklahoma tycoon from the other (I've always gotta tell myself "Pickens-Oil, Gaylord-Newspaper"...)
Also, forgot to share how cool it was in Ft. Worth as well--it was great that the bowl was within driving distance; that drive down 35 was pretty awesome. Also, there was a bar in downtown Ft. Worth called the Library that had $1 beers the night we got there--I was like "I'm home!!!" During the game, I was actually in the student section, which was front and center for Charlton Kieth's INT Touchdown. It was fantastic. Aah, good times...
Too bad you can't renew the tix this year, but I daresay your travels more than make up for it--Rock Chalk!

my fave story about the Tangerine Bowl:
I wanted to move back to Kansas that summer before, but my wife convinved me to stay put another year ... I can't imagine how mad I would have been at myself if I would have missed having a ku bowl game on the mainland in my back yard! we lived in St. Pete Beach at the time ...
Fort Worth was a blast, we wound up hanging around the game afterwards, it was a BLAST!
My wife is a saint for having let me travel so much, we all did go as a family to Ames in 2004, and Boulder in 2005. We may all go down to Stillwater, and as I mentioned before - are all going to Tampa, to show my daughter where she was born (in the shadow of Tropicana Field)
I really am getting excited about the Hawks football season, I saw their FSN special today!!!
Also, Athlon Big XII edition comes out in a week or so!

I was so desperate to go to the Fort Worth Bowl I ended up braving the journey in a car that had 250,000 miles on it. It broke down just as we got into town and I pulled off the next offramp to a motel just off the highway and took a cab to the game. I had to take another cab to get the parts and tools to fix it the next day in the motel parking lot. I drove back with the car held together by shoestrings and it made it all the way back to Andover, Kansas before finally crapping out for good. My dad came from Topeka at four in the morning on Christmas eve so we could be home for Christmas.
In short,
I don't care where the bowl game is, I'd start walking a month early to get there if I had to, it's what I live for.
Fortunately I now own a newer car and could afford a plane ticket if I needed to this year. It'll make it easier, but it's too bad it probably won't make as good a story as my treacherous but blissful journey to Fort Worth.
