Danke! NFL Europa honors ex-Jayhawk

The Frankfurt Galaxy's Web site said it all: "NICK REID ALS PLAYER OF THE WEEK" AUSGEZEICHNET."

Basically, former Kansas University linebacker Nick Reid was named NFL Europa's defensive player of the week Tuesday, after turning in a phenomenal performance for the Galaxy in last weekend's 23-10 victory over the Rhein Fire.

Reid, allocated by the Kansas City Chiefs to Frankfurt, had eight tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, an interception and a pass deflection. Frankfurt now is a league-best 5-2.

Reid plays linebacker and special teams for the Galaxy and has 35 tackles and two sacks this season.

His play in NFL Europa is the beginning of his second stint with the Chiefs. After winning Big 12 defensive player-of-the-year honors in 2005 - his senior year at Kansas - Reid went undrafted and signed a free-agent deal with the Chiefs in 2006. He was one of the team's final cuts at the end of training camp last year.

Reid then signed another deal with the Chiefs in February with the understanding he would be assigned to Frankfurt. Once the season is finished overseas, Reid will come back and is expected to go to River Falls, Wis., for the Chiefs' training camp again. It will start July 27 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Frankfurt's game with Berlin will be telecast at 11 a.m. Saturday on the NFL Network (Sunflower Broadband channels 154 and 235).

¢Pick picks: Dodge City High quarterback Kale Pick, one of KU's targets for the 2008 recruiting class, gave an oral commitment to Arkansas last week.

Pick chose the Razorbacks over Kansas, Iowa State, Colorado State, SMU and Wyoming.

According to Rivals.com, KU has offers extended to a few other quarterbacks, including Ballwin (Mo.) slinger Blaine Gabbert, Greenwood (Ark.) standout Tyler Wilson and Copperas Cove (Texas) standout Robert Griffin.

The state of Kansas still has several undecided highly touted quarterback prospects for 2008, including Arthur Brown (Wichita East), Tanner Hawkinson (McPherson), Chris Harper (Wichita Northwest) and Duane Zlatnik (Rossville).

Kansas has two commitments so far: Harrisonville (Mo.) athlete Sean Ransburg and Houston wide receiver Jamaal Johnson.

¢That's high: Speaking of Brown, Rivals.com released its list of the top 100 prospects in the nation for the class of 2008.

Brown, a linebacker, was ranked 15th in the country. That's even higher than Kamerion Wimbley, a Wichita product who played at Florida State and now is in the NFL. He was ranked 58th in the class of 2002.

Brown has dozens of offers already, including Kansas, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Southern California, Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma : and pretty much any other big-time college football program. He has not narrowed down his choices yet.

Little confused about our friend Arthur Brown, though...

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's becoming more and more rare that HS players play both ways these days, and it was even rare back when two-way players were common that a guy would play QB and LB...maybe this Brown guy is an enigma, but if not--is he a linebacker or a quarterback? Either way, it's cool to have a Kansas kid in the top 15 recruits nationally.

Two way players are pretty rare these days at bigger schools, but in Kansas I see more two way guys than in other places where there is more depth (I was born in Florida and have friends in Texas and Louisiana). In those parts of the country, as well as probably California, Alabama, Georgia and other football rich areas two way guys are rare at big schools because of the glut of talent. Here in Kansas, with less big time talent and Brown being probably far and away the best player on the field every night, you want him out there as much as possible. Just my thinking. I've never seen the kid play, so this is just a guess.

Colgrove is right. I don't know how that got in there, but that's my bad. None of those guys (except maybe Harper) is a QB.
