Update #10: Final, KU wins 67-61
OKLAHOMA STATE - Darnell Jackson went to the line for a one-and-one trip out of the timeout, rolling in the first one. He swished the second attempt, making it a six-point game with 3:57 to play.
David Hoskins turned the ball over for K-State, but Brandon Rush couldn't capitalize, as he missed a three from the corner. Cartier Martin missed a trey look on the other end, and Julian Wright threw a wizard-like pass to Darrell Arthur for two points which put KU back up by eight with 2:30 to go.
Hoskins dusted two in off the glass while knifing across the lane, taking a pass from Clent Stewart to do so. Chalmers then tried to ice it with a three, but the ball went out of bounds, back to K-State, trailing by six with 1:53 left.
Julian Wright put the game on ice with a minute left as he hit a tear-drop jumper in the lane to put KU up by eight, it gave him 12 points and his second huge play of the final minutes.
A free throw-fest finished up the game, as Mario Chalmers led KU with 16 points. Julian Wright had 12, including a late bucket in the lane and a nifty dish to Darrell Arthur, both of which helped KU ice K-State for the third time this season. Sherron Collins was the third Jayhawk in double figures, scoring 10, including two three-pointers.
Cartier Martin led all scorers with 17 points, while Lance Harris had 16 and Akeem Wright had 12 for K-State.
KU will take on the winner of Texas and Oklahoma State tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Ford Center.
Update #9: 3:57, second half, KU leads 56-52
OKLAHOMA CITY - Akeem Wright hit one of two free throws after the media timeout, making it an 11-point KU lead. Wright then scored off of a KU turnover with two points in the lane, giving him 11 for the day and making it a single-digit game.
Lance Harris took the ball deep in the lane after KU lost it on a tie-up for another layup, making it a seven-point game with 4:59 left.
KU called a 30-second timeout, and out of it, Mario Chalmers missed a three from the wing. Lance Harris then missed a three from the corner, but K-State hunted down the offensive board, and Cartier Martin cashed his first three of the second half, to make it a four-point game at the four-minute mark.
Update #8: 6:54, second half, KU leads 56-44
OKLAHOMA CITY - Julian Wright cashed two points inside for KU, giving him eight points on the day, as KU's lead continued to float around the 10-point mark, leading 51-40.
Akeem Wright picked up a pair of free throws after Sasha Kaun was whistled for a pair of fouls within a couple seconds, but Julian Wright came back again to score inisde, getting a shooter's roll off the front of the iron.
Lance Harris was the next Wildcat to take advantage of the bonus, hitting a pair, and it was followed by a Brandon Rush three look from the corner rimming out. Cartier Martin tried to hit a three of his own, but still was cold from deep. Sherron Collins then hit his second three of the game, putting KU back up by 12 points with just over seven minutes to play.
Update #7: 10:56, second half, KU leads 48-40
OKLAHOMA CITY - Brandon Rush hit one of two free throws resulting from a trip while getting fouled going up for a dunk in transition. It came following a sloppy sequence in which the ball changed hands a couple times, and Sasha Kaun headed to the bench after getting whacked in the face. Rush came back then to stroke a three from the left corner, putting KU up by 14 points.
Cartier Martin hit a short two on the baseline after K-State took a 30-second timeout, but KU came back with two points inside for Darrell Arthur, who slipped a pair of points off the glass underneath. Clent Stewart's response was his first three of the game, coming from the top of the key.
After a KU turnover, the Jayhawks' lead slipped to single digits as David Hoskins scored his second field goal of the game inside. He then took down a defensive board off of a Darrell Arthur miss.
Update #6: 15:38, second half, KU leads 43-33
OKLAHOMA CITY - Clent Stewart started the half by getting to the free throw line after Julian Wright was long on a mid-range jumper. He hit one of two, and after hunting down an offenisve rebound, couldn't convert.
After Brandon Rush missed a three, Akeem Wright took down his fourth rebound of the game, but David Hoskins had his shot obstructed on the other end.
Mario Chalmers scored KU's first points of the half with a floater charging hard down the lane, putting KU up by eight. After Lance Harris missed another three-point attempt, Akeem Wright forced a turnover in the backcourt, going in for a layup while being fouled by Brandon Rush. The free throw missed.
Chalmers came back down to can a three-pointer from the top of the key after Julian Wright rebounded his own miss, putting KU up by nine. Chalmers' second three made it a 12-point game, sticking K-State into a deep hole with 16:21 left to play. Chalmers has scored all eight of KU's points in the second half.
K-State called a timeout to regroup, and Luis Colon scored his first points of the game on an inside stick-back of a Lance Harris three miss. That was followed by a bad miss from Sasha Kaun.
Update #5: Halftime, KU leads 35-28
OKLAHOMA CITY - Cartier Martin missed his second straight three attempt out of the timeout, and in transition for KU, Sherron Collins got to the free throw line, where he hit a pair of attempts to put KU up eight.
Lance Harris then had one miss from deep, as K-State's bread and butter has turned against them a bit. Darnell Jackson was unable to convert, being called for a charge on the offensive end.
K-State called a timeout to regroup, and David Hoskins got himself to the free throw line out of it, hitting both to make it a six-point game. Brandon Rush missed an inside layup coming back, and Darnell Jackson's putback came with a foul, getting him to the free throw line. Jackson hit one of two.
Russell Robinson scored on a stick-back of a Darnell Jackson miss with less than a minute left to give KU its biggest lead of the game at 35-26. The Jayhawks then forced a turnover with 30 seconds to go to hold for the last shot. KU sent it back, and Akeem Wright got an open court dunk going into the half.
Lance Harris leads all scorers with 12 points for the 'Cats, while Cartier Martin has eight. Mario Chalmers had eight to lead KU, followed by six from Mario Chalmers.
Update #4: 3:45, first half, KU leads 30-24
OKLAHOMA CITY - Russell Robinson came back out of a full timeout to throw a high lob for Julian Wright, who flushed it down and let out a forceful breath on his way down. It put KU ahead 24-19 and made it a 15-3 Jayhawk run.
Lance Harris put a small halt on KU's surge, hitting his third trey of the game. Julian Wright came back to tip in a Mario Chalmers missed layup. K-State again tried to counter with a three, but Cartier Martin missed from deep for the first time. It again was responded to by a Julian Wright nifty bucket inside. This time, he froze a K-State defender to the left, went back right and laid it in easily off the window.
K-State called a quick timeout, and out of it Akeem Wright stuck back his own miss inside off the glass, keeping the Wildcats within four. Then, after a Sasha Kaun miss, the Wildcats took the ball back upcourt. The Wildcats failed to score on back-to-back trips, and Darrell Arthur took a feed from Brandon Rush to score his second bucket with a two-handed flush. K-State followed it up with a turnover.
Update #3: 7:59, first half, KU leads 22-19
OKLAHOMA CITY - Jason Bennett forced a Russell Robinson turnover on the defensive end, but was tied up going up for a short shot on offense. Darnell Jackson then tied the game with two inside.
Lance Harris came back to hit K-State's fifth three-pointer of the first half, pushing K-State back ahead by three. Sherron Collins tried to match it on the other end, but it rimmed out. A K-State turnover, though, send Mario Chalmers flying in the open court with the ball and ultimately put him at the free throw line.
Chalmers hit both of his charities, keeping KU within one point. Akeem Wright missed a hesitated three try, and Darnell Jackson tore down the rebound. Mario Chalmers again weaved his way in towards the basket, and again got himself to the stripe. Chalmers again made both. He then glided down the right side of the K-State defense after another missed shot for a floater, giving KU a three-point edge.
Update #2: 11:51, first half, K-State leads 16-14
Cartier Martin continued to shine early on, canning a three from the corner to put K-State up by four. David Hoskins then took a KU pass at midcourt and flushed it home in transition in front of Darrell Arthur. Arthur answered back with a mid-range jumper, but back again came K-State with a three, this time courtesy of Lance Harris, putting K-State up seven.
Sherron Collins answered on a lengthy possession with his first three of the week. Collins then fed Brandon Rush for a fast break hoop after Hoskins was forced into an ill-advised pass by Darnell Jackson, pulling KU back within two.
Update #1: 15:27, first half, K-State leads 8-7
OKLAHOMA CITY - KU turned the ball over right off the bat on a pass into the low post, Julian Wright looking for Sasha Kaun. Cartier Martin came down to drain a casual three from atop the key.
Kaun got the ball on KU's next trip up court and muscled through Akeem Wright for an easy two inside. Kaun tried to make it two trips in a row, but was blocked from behind on KU's next trip up the floor. Following that was a player control foul whistled on Julian Wright. Lance Harris came down to stroke a three for K-State.
KU went to Kaun for a fourth straight possession, and this time he drew a trip to the free throw line. He made one of two, pulling KU within three.
Julian Wright swatted away an Akeem Wright offering as K-State brought the ball back up the floor, and it turned into two points in transition for Mario Chalmers. Following that was a David Hoskins traveling call. Brandon Rush put KU back ahead with a floater from his right hand in close range.
Martin stroked a baseline two over Brandon Rush, tilting the scoreboard favor back in K-State's direction, and two failed three-point looks sent the ball back K-State's way. A blocking call on Julian Wright brought the game to a break.

OKLAHOMA CITY - For Kansas University, a win today in the Big 12 Tournament semifinals would boost the team's case for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament even more, that is if it's even needed.
You can say the same for Kansas State - KU's foe in today's 1 p.m. tip in the Ford Center - could use the win to further its case simply just to get into the Big Dance. The Wildcats might already be in, and they might not, but it's not like these two teams need NCAA implications to boost the importance of a third matchup in one season.
KU whacked Oklahoma 64-47 in yesterday's quarterfinals, thanks in large part to a dominant second half. K-State dominated Texas Tech pretty much right from go, trouncing the Red Raiders by 21.
The Jayhawks are 2-0 in the season series, with a 97-70 win in Lawrence on Feb. 7 and a 71-62 triumph in a much tighter contest in Manhattan 12 days later.

Amen sigmund. It's right up there with the KU-Mizzou game in 96 (or 97?) that was KU's only loss of the regular season.
How can someone doubt that officials are being paid or "encouraged" to try to keep games close?
That... or they just hate KU.

Everytime we catch ourselves griping too much about poor officiating and we try to be rational about it, we seem to run into a situation that reminds us why we were griping in the first place. I agree with everyone above that this crew was about the worst I've seen across the board all season. Completely abysmal.
And did I just hear Tom Brennan say we're playing for a number TWO seed? What the heck does this team have to do to stuff the proverbial sock into these talking heads anyway?

What a worthless game.
There can only be so many missed calls before you can't just totally disregard how the team has performed. I agree with Sigmund. This is among the worst one-sided refereeing performances I've ever witnessed. Now that it's over... my only thoughts
1) Thank God Sherron hit a couple 3's. I think that's all it will take for him to explode again.
2) Does Brandon not watch tape of his own shot? I can predict with about 80-90% accuracy whether his shot is going in or not right after he releases it. Brandon, release it earlier! Not on the way down! I still think he played a great game, as usual, just missed a bunch of wide open jumpers because he holds on to it way too long.
3) Any respect I had for KSU's players going into this game is gone. They spent 40 minutes flopping, trying to get calls, and crying about the select few that did not go their way. They should all quit basketball and declare themselves drama majors. They deserve to not get into the tournament, and I hope the selection committee screws them over, to be honest.
4) How on earth do you miss the back-to-back over the back calls late in the game? How do you miss the collision that about knocked the ball out of Sherron's hands and out of bounds? How do you call a foul on Sherron when someone goes over his back for a tip-in? How many bad calls can you make againts Sasha in about a 15-second window? How do you call a foul on Julian on the cleanest pick ever with less than 20 seconds left? How do you... Oh F#$@# it! Go home K-state. All that help from the refs, a nightmarishly bad shooting day, and you still can't pull off the upset? You don't deserve a berth.

Quit griping about the officials. It only makes everyone "hate" KU more when, even when they win, the fans whine about poor officiating.
Instead why don't you focus on KU's poor shot selection in the final four minutes. Rush takes a three with a lot of time on the shot clock when he struggled all day to make one. Mario took one as well although he had been making them so that possession wasn't as bad as others.

Lebowski...
I never once said they should shut down the offense. But, with the lead you can afford to be a little more selective with your shots. Like I said, Chalmers taking the three was fine because he had been hitting them.
Rush's shot however was very, very questionable to me because he was 1 out of 6 at the time, or something like that. He could have gotten that shot 15 seconds later in the possession and shortened the game...if we hadn't gotten a better shot by then.
And I might add you might want to take your blinders off and view the game a bit more objectively. Just to answer one of your points...Collins was called for that foul because he moved sideways into the KSU player, thus negating any over the back call you might have liked.

I disagree that we've got a number 1 seed locked already. I think that UNC, Florida, and Ohio State are going to win their tourneys and if we don't win ours those and Memphis will be the four #1s. People seem to be treating tomorrow like a throwaway game, when it's not. We need to win.

I don't disagree with you filmhawk but there is an integrity issue. Still, other than our own pride there seems to be little to play for at this point. If we get a Thursday game for our first round that's not much time to rest. It's likely the next team we face has been resting all this week.

I don't think Memphis will be given a #1 seed. They are 30-3, but played a terrible pre-conference schedule. I think KU deserves a #1 seed, but I think the committee will look at Ohio State, UNC, Florida, and maybe even Wisconsin and UCLA. I'd love a #1 seed, but at some point, regardless, you have start beating good teams to get the Final 4 and win the whole thing. We were a #2 seed in 2003, and beat #3 Duke and #1 Arizona to get to the Final 4. Remember 1988. We were a #6, and won it all. We were a #1 in 1995, 1997, and 1998, and never made the Final 4.

Exactly. A #1 or #2...when it comes down to it you are going to have to face the top teams at some point.
I think the winner OSU / Wisconsin game gets a #1; Carolina probably gets one if they win out...winning the tournament and regular season championship in the toughest conference deserves a #1 seed; Florida grabs a top seed if they win the SEC tournament; KU nails the final one if they win the Big XII final.
If one of those last three stumble it opens the door for Memphis. No matter what anyone says, winning 22 in a row is a feat these days when upsets happen nearly every night.
Personally I would prefer a #2 and have the boys fired up, using the lack or respect card for motivation...if they need any.

The only problem with Memphis getting a number 1 seed is that they have zero quality wins. Winning 22 games straight isn't impressive when the highest RPI team out of the lot is a 102.

I heard someone (Gottlieb?) mention Georgetown as a possible #1, if they win the Big East tonight. GTown has 9 losses, but I think they are more deserving of a #1 seed than Memphis is. Memphis plays too many cupcakes.
Oden was huge today. I think OSU will win the Big 10 and earn a #1. So will Florida, UNC, and Kansas.

Refs miss calls all the time, it has nothing to do with the name on the Jersey... eh, unless it is Duke. I will grant you that I think some refs too often let a coach riding them dictate a call or no call. Nevertheless, vent if you must but don't lose sight of how much fun it is to watch this KU team play.
I absolutely love watching these guys. I think that one reason they are fun to watch is because they all appear to get along great. It has been a while since I think we have had this type of chemistry. Every player seems to always want to congratulate or high five a teammate. I remember past years where you would hardly ever see some guys show appreciation for another... ex. Giddens and Langford. I love to watch the way our team competes and pulls for one another.
Being around the tournament this week, I have had that conversation with several fans of other schools. I am pumped for the next phase of our season, but hate the fact that the season is winding down. This was and is a team that I have loved watching play the game... I hope that we have 7 more great games this year and lets bring it back and do it all over again next year.

I agree, bad officiating today, but what do you expect with Curtis Shawn and Tom Welmer. Throw Jim Burr in there and you would have the trifecta. I disagree with the call on Collins underneath the KState player - I don't think he knew the player had the ball, he was boxing out. And the same thing happened on KU's offensive end and we couldn't get the call.
But the guys held it together, and was able to get the win. We have things to work on for tomorrow.
The announcer right now after the Texas-Ostate game is funny. He thinks Durant would have made a difference last week if he was healthy. KU had the lead when Durant went down.
#1 seed - Florida - maybe if they win their tournament. Too many losses in the end of the season. North Carolina - same thing.
If we win tomorrow, we should be a lock for a number one. Does it really matter - no probably not. No matter what seed you are - you have to win to keep on playing.

Its a little funny, that in the Midwest or in Kansas we may be 'disliked' because we 'whine' about obviously bad officiating and win anyway. That doesn't so much bother me (we can do what we want as fans, and usually we KU fans are NOT a class-less bunch..), but getting a #2 seed at this point by the National media and committee would make me feel snubbed. The lack of respect for the BigXII and KU just bothers me. I was floored 2 weeks ago during a nationally televised ESPN N.Carolina game that Dick Vitale was going on and on about the Jayhawks--what are the chances of that happening--he actually made the rest of the country hear some props about KU! I was shocked, because I would not have expected it. Bottom line: I think we may be earning natl respect or specifically, media analyst respect, but whenever I hear the selection picks, it is just the same ole bull-butter! Maybe we just have to beat TX on Sunday, and get to the FinalFour to erase the Bucknell/Bradley stigma.
And yes, I do think it somewhat academic if we get a #1 or a #2 seed-NOT much difference, but it speaks for the respect I want to see us get.

It is that time of year, when you just get upset that all there will be in 3.5 weeks is the Royals (even though they are going to win the central). You know, when the hawks were down 20 to Syracuse in 2003, it wasn't about losing the national championship, it was about not getting to watch that group play anymore that made me sad. I agree so much, this is a great group, so much fun to be a KU fan anywhere watching these guys. Some of the stuff they do, and the way they do it just puts a smile on your face. It's good b-ball.
And they are great kids. What a story if they do go all the way.
Now that I've said that. I'm not going to think that way again until they bring home the title in 23 days.
Can't wait for the ride.
Go Wisc. over OSU tomorrow so that KS gets to play in St. Louie.
I was in Detroit last year, and it was sad. Bradley fans intimidated our team. go on the road with these guys. 1st and 2nd round of the NCAAs is the best sporting event you will ever attend. Let's show up for them. Make that overnight road trip. Fall asleep in your seat at the United Center waiting for the 1st game to start. College kids, skip class, it only happens 4 times during your college career (or 8 for some of us).

The ESPN Gameday analysts this morning (before the game) all had Kansas as a lock for a number 1 seed, predicting them to win the game today and the championship tomorrow. Digger Phelps and Jay Bilas have been touting KU's run of late and I haven't felt like they've been snubbing this team. With a preseason #1 ranking and the early miscues, folks in the media were reluctant to jump back on the KU bandwagon. That hasn't been the case for the past couple weeks, as the other top teams, (Ohio State included) have stubbed their toes.
On CBS, during the OSU-Purdue halftime the NCAA selection committee chairman was interviewed and asked about the brackets being fixed before the end of the Big 10 and Big XII games on Sunday since they end late in the afternoon. The fellow said they would not wait for the end of these two games, however alternate plans would be set up for possible scenarios which he didn't specify. My guess is the alternate scenario would be a meltdown by either KU or Ohio State such that it would be embarrassing to pick either one as a #1. My feeling is a close loss by the top two teams would not be seen as a black eye on the selection committee if preselected for #1 seeds.
A win and KU is a 1 seed, no question.

lawrence, Kan. (AP) -- In a March 3 story about the Texas-Kansas basketball game, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Kansas' 24-7 run to take a 59-58 lead coincided with an injury to Texas' Kevin Durant. Kansas led 71-65 when Durant left the game and was up 81-72 when he returned.
Why the hell do they keep saying UNC is a #1 seed? You got to be freaking kidding me!I think we are a one seed and by the time tomorrows game is over I think the committee wil already have made their decision win or lose.go hawks!!!!

NavyHawk - It would really bother me if they picked the #1 seeds before those games are over. Ohio State is playing Wisconsin, and we're playing Texas. Neither of those games are easy wins. Now, I realize that both Ohio State and Wisconsin could be #1 seeds whichever way the game goes, but not so for Kansas/Texas. In my mind at least, Kansas has to win tomorrow to show that they have what it takes to win it all.

Leikness, Indiana went 32-0 in 1976.
Not sure why you said to omit unlv.
unlv was 34-0 in 1991 but they lost to Duke in the semi-finals. They were 35-5 when they won the title in 1990.

even if ku would happen to lose...they should still be a number 1. winning the conference tourney when you are number 2 in the nation shouldn't have anything to do with the seeding. but all of espn thinks kansas MUST win to get the 1 spot...which is bs...ku is 29-4 and won the regular season outright. isn't that good enough?

notabandwagonfan is totally right.
There comes a time when bickering must stop and the family must pull together.
KU beat the Prince of !@#$%^ Darkness today for the third time. And it did so with Rush shooting bricks. This game with Texas will be VERY tough, but what the heck, KU can beat them.Rush will probably be hotter than a fire cracker and my guess is that Mr. D, Coach Self, will have hatched a plan for taking Durant out of his game. Rush will probably start out on him. Go hawks.

one more thing...memphis may be good...but they are no number 1 seed....they have no big wins and their conference is like playing the special olympics. if they were in one of the major conferences(big 12, big 10, pac 10, acc or big east) they wouldn't be ranked number 5. but neways...ku is hot right now and hope we can stop texas tomorrow. rock chalk!

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear in my post about wanting to play Texas with a healthy Durant.
My intent wasn't to imply that his injury had anything to do with KU winning the first game. Rather it was to have him healthy for a rematch so we could prove to the national media that regardless of Durant's injury we would have more than likely won the first game.
If you watched the first game you could tell, before his injury, he was winded and tired and was missing shots he made in the first half. So his injury had very little to do with KU winning that game.
