Work continues at the Anderson Family Football Complex, and it's getting pretty noticeable now.
Crews were hard at work Saturday, concentrating on the area southeast of Memorial Stadium. A chunk of spaces around lots 91, 92 and 93 southeast of the stadium has been removed, presumably to make room for two practice fields that will be developed in that area.
In addition, digging is noticeable on the southeast, southwest, west and northwest sides of the stadium. KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway insisted in a press release one year ago that every parking spot taken out would be replaced nearby. That likely means the spaces removed southeast of the stadium will be replaced west or southwest of the stadium.
Parking lots 55 and 59 west of the stadium are closed while work is being done.
The rearranged parking is expected to be done soon. The original target dates called for the two practice fields southeast of the stadium to be done this fall, and the building southwest of the stadium to be completed in the summer of 2008.
The complex is expected to cost $31 million and was financed by donations, including large gifts from the families of Dana Anderson and Tom Kivisto.
¢ New guy: Kansas University has made a late addition to its 2007 recruiting class. Rivals.com reported Chea Peterman will enroll at Kansas and join the football team this summer.
Peterman is a 6-foot-2, 217-pound linebacker out of North Little Rock, Ark.
Peterman won't be on scholarship right away, but chose to enroll at KU after pondering prep school. He had an early offer from Air Force and the attention of Arkansas and KU.
He comes decorated - Peterman was named the 7A defensive player of the year in Arkansas, after recording 164 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

CREWS WORK ON THE AREA SOUTHEAST OF MEMORIAL STADIUM as part of the construction of the Anderson Family Football Complex. The crews spent Saturday tearing up parking spaces.
"I'm excited about Kansas," Peterman told Rivals. "I always followed to SEC, but the Big 12 is a big-time conference. I liked the area that Kansas is in, and I will be there on August 2."
¢ Mangino in Wichita: KU coach Mark Mangino will speak at a Kansas football reception in Wichita on Wednesday.
The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wichita starting at 5 p.m. The cost of the reception is $20, but walk-up registration may not be available if the event is filled up. Reservations can be made by calling Kelly Watson at 864-7195.
Mangino will be conducting a satellite football camp in Wichita earlier in the day for high school players.
¢ Dates to remember: Kansas has not announced game times for any games this fall, but special days have been designated.
Homecoming will be the weekend of Nov. 3, when Kansas is scheduled to take on Nebraska. Band Day will be Sept. 8 against Southeast Louisiana, and Family Weekend is Sept. 15 against Toledo.
¢ Heisman man?: Oklahoma State's football program has gone to the full-court press to try and win the school's first Heisman Trophy since Barry Sanders in 1988.
The candidate? None other than wide receiver Adarius Bowman. OSU has created a Web site - www.bowman12.com - complete with biographical information, videos, photos and more.
Guess which of Bowman's performances gets a lot of play, too? You know it - his 13 catch, 300-yard domination of Kansas last year. Video of all four of his touchdowns from that day is available on the site.
Bowman actually played in Lawrence twice last year. He grabbed three rebounds in five minutes of action for the Cowboys' basketball team again at Kansas in January.

What's wrong with playing Nebraska for homecoming? We beat them the last time in Lawrence and played them to overtime last year.
If the program is truly progressing, it could be a good game.

Homecoming: 3 years ago - ksu (first win over them in 10 years), 2 years ago - nebraska (first win over them in 40 years), last year - texas a&m (loss)
Also, when you make these games homecoming, it gives more alums an opportunity to come back for a good game and keeps the stadium KU blue, as opposed to shades of red and purple.

That simple.
It's going to require a bit of faith. well, a lot of organizations schedule events that weekend, and now you've got KU alumni fighting with Nebraska folks for those tickets ...
Baylor, is less of a draw (not many of their fans come up north), and as a smaller private school, they generate less fans ... I'm not thinking about the win as much as you'll have homecoming against a team that doesn't draw well, then have a full stadium against Nebraska (with the travelling fan base) you add money to your coffers from "outside" the system (alums would give their money for homecoming versus a different team)
this move just doesn't make much sense ... and yes, we already got our big W against them, unlike needing the homecoming crowd versus KSU a few seasons back ...

It has nothing to do with being scared. This a failure in maximizing our opportunities to have our team play in front of the most fans for their games. Homecoming is going to have a great crowd no matter what opponent we play and Nebraska will almost certainly be a sellout. The KU geniuses (athletic dept.) decided to combine these so now we'll have our 2 biggest "draws" for home college football weekends this year on the same day. IMOP this is both stupid from a financial standpoint and in giving KU football an opportunity to play before the most fans. As well as taking from the fans, which with this schedule is already pretty bare of intriguing matchups, the opportunity to experience the exceptional football atmosphere that is present on homecoming weekend and, recently, now when Nebraska comes to town (this game could be for the North crown). Really, this year the only home game to get excited about is Nebraska.

I'm sorry natehawk, but I don't buy that "homecoming will have a great crowd no matter who the opponent" Last year I geared up for one of the biggest games of the year when A@M came to town for homecoming. I certainly don't think we impressed any of the Aggie faithful with our showing. I definately was not impressed! I can't be exact on a number but I believe it was toward the bottom of forty thousand. I wonder if ten thousand more screaming fans would have won us that sorry game. (Not that the fans were totally to blame in that game, that was the poorest showing from any QB I have ever seen).

Yeah, I had to dig through names a bit to find out it was Peterman, I should have posted his name when I found out. I found him on the scout network. Usually Rivals is more up to date on our recruits and they did break the story, but this time they didn't even have us on Peterman's school list whereas scout had a story on him liking KU long ago.
Good news again today though, DT Ryan Glazer looks like a really good pickup, 6-3, 285, 5.1. The limits on Juco recruiting has made us an exceedingly young team these last couple of years and it's good to be back to normal. Guys like Glazer can really light a fire under those youngsters that thought they were safely next in line for a starting spot.
As for playing Nebraska for homecoming, why don't the posters here allow people who actually know what they are doing to do the scheduling? Do you just like to hear yourself bitch that much? A few years ago when Nebraska came to town the stands were half red and it seriously effected the atmosphere of the game. So it is natural that you would want to schedule the team that draws the most opposing fans on the day when the most KU fans will come and buy the tickets before the Big Red Machine can get to them. Selling out the stands to make money is important, but selling them out to the opposing fans is a bit counterproductive to actually winning the game. With a good following there is no reason not to repeat our last victory over Nebraska and I think KU should make every effort to make that happen.

Of course, when I see a KU fan wearing red when we play Nebraska or Iowa State, I just want to smack them!
(I actually bought a blue Beak 'em shirt for a friend, because all they had was a red one for that game!)

And lets not forget that was our biggest home game of the year and a perfect day for a game.
35,000 Hawks-pathetic!

There were a LOT of Aggies fans at that game, and quite a bit of maroon in the Fieldhouse for that game as well ...
I just know there's more organized stuff on campus for homecoming that most weekends, and I'd hate for the program to alienate more alumni with the higher ticket prices that come with the premier games like Nebraska.
Homecoming usually brings out the Kansas fans that aren't close by, and if someone is coming back with their families (since there's no children's ticket prices) getting
slammed or shut out from attending.
I'm looking at the Big Picture in the long run ... and I just know what a big deal it is for my kids to go to KU events, and also the economics of the situation.

Do you mean like us scheduling the defending National Champions, OU, for Homecoming in 2001? ;)
The general rule of thumb is to schedule someone you know you can beat. As far as scheduling Nebraska for Homecoming this season, I can see both sides of the argument. With last year's disappointing turnout, and overall record, I would lean toward this being a good idea.

You can speculate all you want about who to schedule on homecoming, but the fact of the matter is, well, it won't matter much if the football team isn't winning.
As unfortunate as it may be, we have a lot of die-hard basketball fans here at KU who are very hesitant to become football fans because they are used to rooting for a team that is a perennial winner and, in my opinion, don't know what to think about our football program.
I get the feeling there are many of these fans out there who are 'on the fence' about whether or not to pour themselves into Kansas Football, and it will take nothing short of a season in which the win column doubles that of the loss column to get them on board. I wish it weren't like that, but it is.
Bottom line is, we have to live with the fan base that we have, and us die-hard KU Football fans urging others to get on board will not be enough to fill Memorial every home game--the team has to win to do that.
Mangino has done an excellent job of putting Hawk Football back on the radar screen since his arrival, and has helped generate the most general public interest we've seen in the last 15 years and we still can only muster freakin 35,000 for homecoming last year.
KU Football will always have the die-hards like myself and many of you who post here--hell, we could go 0-12 year in and year out and we'd probably still attend most every game we could--but unfortunately there isn't enough of us to fill Memorial.
Coach's off the field efforts have most definitely put more butts in the seats since he got here, but in order to see the number of people we would all like to see at EVERY home game, the 'on the fence' fans need to be swayed, and the ONLY way to do that is to take care of business on the field and WIN consistently.
I wish KU had Chicago Cubs-like fans, or even someone above mentioned Iowa State, but we don't. We have Crazed KU Basketball fans and Casual KU Football fans. I don't like it one bit, but it is what it is.
You can argue all you want about what opponent is best for certain games, but unless the team starts winning regularly and draws the support of traditionally basketball-only fans then all you are going to see is the opposing teams' colors or a lot of fans wearing silver at Memorial.

I'll be the first to admit, when I was at KU 1993-2000, I wasn't much of a Jayhawk football fan.
I marched for two years, but like most folks, it was just for the free men's basketball tickets.
Terry Allen came to speak at my fraternity later on in my college career, and that sparked my interest somewhat ...
It was living in Florida, where people are R-A-B-I-D college football fans where the bug really bit me, I'd be a fan of KU football now even if they lost every single game!
Our fan base is making progress, did anyone notice how many folks we're out tailgating at the spring scrimmage?
It takes time to build something from nothing, and sadly that's where Coach Allen left things ...
***
In general, I have become disinterested in most professional sports, and have become an even bigger collegiate sports fan as a result ...

sevenyearhawk,
I forgot to mention earlier, I could not agree with you more about how you feel when KU fans wear red to our home game match-ups with Nebraska and Iowa State. That has been a huge pet peeve of mine. I seem to recall, for the '94 or '95 season, they even printed on the tickets what color people should wear to the games, and it still did not seem to help. Also, it did not assist the cause when at one of those recent games with Nebraska ('99?) it was raining, and the slickers they were selling at the stadium were red! Oh, well. As long as those people are cheering for KU and filling the stadium, it is better than nothing.

sevenyear- Its interesting to hear how you evolved into a big KU football guy. My story paralels yours a bit. During the 90's I wasnt a real football fan myself mainly because basketball was the thing growing up in my family. I guess its when I joined the army and all my army friends were all about college football. A bunch of em played in high school and college and wanted to do coaching later on. The only time you heard talk about college basketball was between January and March. The other nine months it was all about football.
Its more than that though. The competitveness and passion all over the country from college football is just incredible! I think that is what has sold me in the end. I still follow Hawk Basketball but not the same way I do the football team.

Thank you for your support. It is time that the true Jayhawk supporters rise up, rally the base, and contribute to a cause - football domination - far greater than any appearance in an elite eight basketball match. As for colors worn to the game... That's was a major factor in all the money dumped into finding a logo, color, font, etc. to define KU. Whether you liked all the research and it's results or not, is a moot-point. Possibly the reason no one knows what to wear to the games is because our uniforms change every 5-years (which is happening again this year - the KU on the helmets will be the new KU that is on the Jayhawk.) I believe the move to develop an identity is a very good idea, and if our football team does dig in and start winning, now is the perfect time for it.

I tend to like simplicity in football uniforms--the simpler, the better, I think--I always love when teams don their 'throwback' jerseys, although it's bittersweet for me because they always go back to the newer ones.
But yeah--you gotta pick something and stick to it. Brand recognition is huge in college athletics, and in order achieve that you have to do something right the first time and stick with it. I'm ok with the unis we have now; I'm not in love with them, but I'd rather stick with these than go through another navy blue phase or some other sort of overhaul.

Lew Perkins and Mangino are not Bohl and Allen, and Nebraska sure as hell aint defending champion Oklahoma. There were plenty of Aggie fans around, as most of you probably know the majority of aggie fans stand the ENTIRE game. The student section doesn't even have seats. I bet they were probably laughing at the situation...anyway being the nice young man I was I sat and watched the most deppresing second half of my life.
There should be an age limit as to who can enter the stadium. Any old people listening stay at home and watch it on television, they even give you commentary so you can follow the game better.
Not neccesarily old people, but anyone like the geezer character. When I'm old I'm gonna be yelling for my hawks!

Jimmy Dean, wow--what a bunch of B.S.!!!! most of the folks sitting in my section are at least twice my age--granted, they don't stand the entire game, but you can bet your a$$ if there is a big third or fourth down when we are on D, they will be standing and yelling like they were 18. Same goes for big plays on O.
What you do is you turn around when the old fart tugs on your jersey, and sock him one real quick--he'll be out the rest of the game, and chances are his wife will be nodding off anyway.
Stories like that just p!ss me off--just because you are old doesn't give you the right to be a jerkoff. You go to a football game, you gotta know what to expect. The guy wasn't Bill Mayer by any chance, was he??

Jimmy Dean- I feel bad for you in that situation and I dont approve of how the man acted. However, Im not going after the elderly. But bmcmich is right though, no ones age gives them an excuse to act like a clown. People of all ages should understand that when you go to a KU/Texas A&M football game its gonna be a whole lot different atmosphere than a Royals/Devil Rays game.

The part about socking the old guy one was said jokingly, of course...
Thought I'd clarify because sometimes meanings can be misunderstood when something is typed as opposed to spoken--I certainly don't go around beating up the elderly =)

Touche, JBurtin. I just had to throw that scheduling gaffe out there to see what other folks thought about it. Like many other season ticket holders and KU football fans at the time, I had reached a high level of frustration at that point. Losing to SMU the previous season, providing them with their only 'W' for the year and making their QB look like an early contender for the Heisman Trophy, didn't help matters any. I concur that our current head coach and current AD have it together much better than the previous administration. It should be a good season, and it's great to see so many posts on here with people interested in KU football!
