The Big 12 Conference on Thursday released its preseason football poll, as voted on by 24 media members covering Big 12 football.
Missouri received 16 first-place votes, thus making them the favorite in the North. Nebraska was the only other North school to get first place votes, garnering eight. Voters tapped Kansas State third, Kansas University fourth, Colorado fifth and Iowa State sixth.
In the South, Texas is the preseason media favorite, taking in 16 votes as well for first place. Oklahoma took in seven tallies, while Texas A&M received one. Oklahoma State was selected to finish fourth, with Texas Tech fifth and Baylor sixth.
All 12 conference coaches will be in San Antonio, Texas, with selected players next Monday-Wednesday for Big 12 Media Day, with Kansas scheduled to appear on Monday afternoon. San Antonio is also the site of this year's Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship game, to be played at the Alamodome.

That's cool that KU is 4th in the North, that's probably correct. However, I don't really care what the media says about preseason polls....All I care about is baseball is almost over and football is right around the corner :)

How closely bunched are the North teams? Would a dozen plays, either way, turn the North into a free-for-all? We played Missery and UNL to the wire last year and, of course, manhandled the sheepherders. The obvious answer is yes.
We were a dozen (or fewer) plays from 9-3 last year.
Give us some QB play and a pass rush, it could be us at the top. Yes, it's hard for KU fans to think like winners in football. We need an attitude adjustment around here.

The North should be a close race.
I think we could win it against the Fuskers in Lawrence. We could lose it in Arrowhead.
KU has a real honest shot at the North title, and the right to be pounded into hamburger by Texas or OU this year, instead of waiting till next season.

I guess the pundits have no reason not to tap us fourth, so I'm ok with that. BUT, I do believe that there is no reason why we can't shock the world and win the North (or at least be right there in competition for it).
It's not just the percieved ease of our non-con this year, it's the way everything falls into place for us by playing the BII swing games when we do. We have a bye week before going to K-Suck, and the Nebra$$holes play Tehas the week before they come to Larry. You couldn't set it up better than that.
And prairie dog, the game in Lincoln did go down to the wire last year, but the game in Columbia was about as far from down-to-the wire as you can get. But enough of that, "the past is past and the future is NOW!!" I can't wait til 9/1!!!!!!!!

bmcmich1 -- We were doing fine against MU last year until we stopped running Cornish, who was averaging 8 yards per carry.
MU can't stop the run.
After the game the fans went, "Hey why'd we stop running Cornish?" And Cornish went, "Hey why'd they stop running me?" And still nobody knows.
And KU football continues to be KU football. The end.
THAT'S why we're not picked to win any North title.

I know we were doing fine against Mizzou last year until we stopped running Cornish-every KU Football fan should know that; I was correcting the statement that we took them down to the wire, which, mostly because of the reason you mentioned, we did not.
And if everyone thought "KU football continues to be KU football. the end," why don't we just cut the program altogether? Why keep hiring coaches, building facilities and recruiting players? That's a pretty piss-poor attitude... So KU is NEVER going to win a North title because we haven't done it in the 11 years since the big XII's inception?? The basketball team hasn't won a title in 19 years; are they never going to win one again??
The great thing about college football is that everyone is on the same level this time of year--I could give two sh!ts whether some guy in New York or LA picks us fourth in the North, but when our own fans are writing us off a month before the season starts that's terrible. I can be a realist in every other facet of life--unless it becomes mathematically impossible, I'M picking the 'Hawks to win the North.

4th is good. No expectations (except from KU fans). Now we can fly in under the radar. Something good will have to happen from the QB position for that to take place.

KU has a great football game day in beautiful Lawrence. That's why you keep it going.
As for being a winning team on a regular basis? I doubt it. The water is poisoned or something.
I've seen too many decades of us shooting ourselves in the foot. But hey. The North title is do-able. We're overdue for a good season; the last one was in 1995. We need a good season this year. Next year we play OU and UT.

I am relishing the underdog role this year as well as the way the schedule favors us. If we play well and get the ball to bounce our way when needed, the north could be ours. I am very excited.
I love how everyone is blowing us off this year. Isnt it interesting how we crushed KSU last year, but everyone in the media is predicting they will beat us this year. Are they really gonna be that much better this year? I think not.
KU 27 KSU 21-Todd Reesing solidifies himself as the leader of the offense. Many KSU fans begin to realize the Josh Freeman hype is just that.

It'll all come down to quarterbacking, pass rush, and leadership for us. We are young, only 10 seniors. It would appear that MU and NU have the most talent but coaching at this level is so important and I think we have good coaches. I'd favor the two quarterback system during the non-conference schedule to see who is a gamer and then decide. After all, Mangino had Zach Dyer starting ahead of Bill Whittemore. I look for us to surprise the so-called experts this year, at least 8-4 or better.
