Kansas City, Mo. Kansas University athletic director Lew Perkins never has been shy about trying new things. He admitted as much Monday, though the actions at Arrowhead Stadium reverberated louder than any of his words possibly could.
In conjunction with Missouri University and the Kansas City Chiefs, KU announced Monday that the annual Border War football game will move to Arrowhead Stadium in 2007 and 2008.
It's huge news for both schools, which for more than 60 years had alternated the rivalry game between Lawrence and Columbia, Mo. Though Kansas still will be considered the home team in '07 and Missouri in '08 as originally scheduled, all parties involved now know - and embrace - the fact the atmosphere hardly will resemble a true home game on campus.
"There's going to be more people from Missouri at our home game and more people from Kansas at their home game, because there's that many more seats," Perkins said. "When you think about it, it's really a plus."
Added Chiefs president Carl Peterson: "We'd like to see 50-50. Half of the stadium filled with MU and half filled with KU."
Both games are scheduled for the Saturday after Thanksgiving - Nov. 24, 2007, and Nov. 29, 2008. When asked the chances of the move to Arrowhead becoming permanent, Peterson declined to speculate, saying, "We haven't discussed that at all. At this particular point, we're only looking at two years."
The turnout these next two years could dictate the future of the series. But no matter how many fans flock to Arrowhead, both KU and MU are guaranteed to have a nice payday associated with the games - one of the reasons both schools finally agreed to the move after years of one side hesitating.
The deal calls for both KU and MU to be guaranteed $1 million each year from the Chiefs, with the possibility for more if the game draws well. The Chiefs will profit as well, picking up the revenue of tickets, parking and concessions. Peterson said the schools could earn more money if ticket sales "get to a certain point."
KU-MU at Arrowhead
Fans on the street react to the news that the Kansas-Missouri football game will be held in Arrowhead Stadium this year.
"There's certainly going to be a crowd big enough to cover the guarantee," Peterson said with a grin. "If not, I'm sure (Chiefs chairman) Clark Hunt will be talking to me."
Perkins said $1 million is about what Kansas makes for a home game, and getting the sum twice in two years essentially doubles the profits. Visiting teams in the Big 12 Conference don't receive any revenue under normal circumstances.
Seated next to Perkins at Arrowhead on Monday was KU coach Mark Mangino, who insisted that leaving the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium this November wouldn't strip his team of any advantage.
"Kansas City is right next door to us," Mangino said. "It's familiar territory for us. Giving up the game in our stadium is not a big factor to me because we're playing right here at Arrowhead in Kansas City."
Still, the move is expected to draw criticism from both a financial standpoint among Lawrence merchants and a competitive standpoint for KU football.
Kansas fans were torn regarding the previous game at Arrowhead, a conference game with Oklahoma in 2005. Kansas lost that game, 19-3, yet went 6-0 at Memorial Stadium that season to barely qualify for a bowl.
KU officials were quick to point out Monday that Lawrence won't be without its fair share of games the next two seasons. Despite the move to Arrowhead, the Jayhawks will play seven games in Lawrence in both '07 and '08. The 2007 home schedule will include Central Michigan, Southeastern Louisiana, Toledo, Florida International, Iowa State, Baylor and Nebraska.
In addition, this year's Mizzou game will be included in KU's season-ticket package, though Missouri elected not to include the '08 game in its season-ticket plan.
Neutral sites aren't unheard of for rivalry games. The most well-known example is the Texas-Oklahoma game, which is played annually in Dallas. Unlike the KU-MU plan, the Cotton Bowl is split in half every year in terms of ticket allocations between Longhorn and Sooner fans.
Other neutral-site contests include Army-Navy in Philadelphia and Florida-Georgia in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Chiefs have strived to play host to this game since Peterson was hired in 1988. Despite failing to come up with a deal for nearly two decades, talks always continued in some capacity.
It finally came to fruition Monday.
"There were a lot of people who said it would never get done," Peterson said. "But I think perseverance is the right word here."

Has anyone considered the impact of ESPN College Game Day being present at this event?
It's highly possible, and not likely they would have just come to either Lawrence or Columbia at this stage in these programs' development ...

I highly doubt that Game Day will ever come to KC for this game. For one thing, neither team is on an elite level yet (and I hesitate to use the word "yet," since neither team has been even remotely close to the elite level). Another thing is that I don't believe Game Day has ever gone to a neutral site. The whole point of Game Day is to soak in the college atmosphere, in a college environment. As the article itself states, this will not be like a college environment.

My Dad used to own a small business in Lawrence and he was constantly asked to donate to the university. If he were still in business I can bet that all the donations would stop.
I wonder if businesses in Columbia and Lawrence will respond in that manner? It would be one way to help recover the cost of lost revenue.

I am shocked that the University would take away revenue from the city of Lawrence, like this, what a let down.
The businesses on Mass St. thrive on the fact that this match up is coming into town, people from all 50 states show up to stand behind their alma mater.
I hate to say this, but so long Lawrence & the Border War, I will miss not coming back to Kansas to support the Jayhawks. There is no way in hell they are getting a dime out of me for this game, to be played in Arrowhead Stadium.
And, on top of that, it won't be a sell out crowd. Forget watching it on national TV, it will be blacked-out, and ESPN won't waste their time on this match-up.
I cannot believe that the money hungry bigots of the world have finally gotten their greedy little hands on this, and decided to destroy it with everything else.
Way to kill the College Spirit, and the College atmosphere, for the all mighty dollar. Fascist Pigs, I can smell your stench all the way in North Carolina.

Again,
First off, I will say that I am a huge KU fan and go to several football and basketball games every year (including the ku/mu game in columbia this year. that being said, I don't know what all the fuss is about.
First off, this hurts lawrence businesses? How is that exactly? There will still be seven home games, same as last year. The businesses should make the same amount of money, you would think. You can't take away something you never had. By the way, do most of you realize that these businesses make money 365 days a year because of the university? They exist because of the university. The merchants should be excited and supportive of the university regardless. It seems to me that they feel entitled.
Which brings me to my next point. Why do the fans feel entitled to this game? Are we here to support the university or is it visa versa. When did everything become "what about me"? Where are these fans every other game during the year? BTW do you realize that the last game vs misery in Lawrence was not sold out. What gives with that?
Obviously this venue change was made to increase revenue. As any business would tell you, the way you get better is to raise revenue and improve your business. How many revenue generating sports do we have at KU? Did you realize that the money generated from these 2 sports keep ALL of the other sports afloat. Do you think a player on the womens soccer team, or the mens track team would be happy if there just wasn't enough money in the coffers to keep their programs afloat?
And Lew didn't make this decision alone. I am sure he asked those people with real input, Chacellor Hemingway, select deans and professors etc.. This was a university decision.
But all I hear on this board is "what about me" and "do you know how this affects me" Can you still not go the game every year now? is this better in the long run? If you don't want to support misery, then people can still eat, lodge and drink in lawrence. Driving to the game is like driving across most major cities. Or is it to inconvienient for you? Because of course this university is here to support you and you are "entitled" right?

Jayhawk86:
You make some good points, but you also miss some important points.
First off, the KU vs MU game in 2005 is one of the top 5 record crowds at Memorial. If that game wasn't sold out as you claim, how'd it end up so high in terms of all-time attendance?
But the most important point you're missing: the history behind the rivalry is diminished by this game being moved to Missouri for the next two years. Think about it this way: the people of Kansas and the people of Missouri have been rivals since before the Civil War. The rivalry is intense. There are people on both sides who won't step foot into the other state unless it's to take a piss.
Now, thanks to this deal, lucky KU gets to play it's rivalry game in its rivals state for THREE straight years. The very fact that the slavers have to step foot in Kansas is an important part of this rivalry.....and they get off scott free for the next two years.
Still not convinced it's a bad deal for KU? What's more valuable: $1,000,000 now, or $1,000,000 a year from now?
According to Lew, KU makes about a million for each home game. So no matter what, KU was going to get a million in November 2007. But guess what? The visiting team in conference doesn't usually get anything. But not so with this deal. Each team gets a million. So MU will get a million dollars this year, when originally they would have gotten nothing.
Next year KU will get its $1 million visiting team payout and by that time, MU's $1 million will be worth about $1, 050,000 using a conservative 5% investment return.
So guess who gets screwed in this deal financially? The University of Kansas

Jayhawk86, you could not be more wrong. How many times does the University ask local businesses to donate time, money, food, advertising....to cover the expenses of the athletic department? Millions of dollars.
You cannot compare losing the Missouri game to having a home game against Florida International. The Missouri, Oklahoma, Nebraska, k state games sell out. The Florida International game will have about 28,000 people there. See the difference.
Also bogus about this is Lew 'MAKING' fans pay for the Arrowhead game. You want to see a true feeling of how fans feel, make the game optional to season ticket holders and see how many show.
Also, we played OU there in 05, terrible crowd, we lost, didn't have any home field advantage.
Lew, you suck. $$$$$$$$$$$

Rivethead, Please apply the same payout for 2008. That year KU would have gotten nothing, sooo.. Now they get 1 million. and by the time they get their home game in 2009 they would make the same 50,00 that you claim misery would get.
secondly, it will be easier for you, me or any other Jayhawk fan to go to the game every year. and due to proximity, we very well could take away any home field advantage each and every year that misery would normally get in their place.
BTW, Memorial capacity is 50,071. Attendance for the last Misery game 48,238.

ESPN College Gameday!?! Ha! Thanks for the laugh sevenyearhawk. KU-MU means precisely jackcrap on a national level, and even more so in football. This is not Ohio St.-Mich, OU-Tx, Fla-Georgia. We are talking about two mediocre football programs that have no business holding this game on a neutral field. Both schools have quality on campus venues and its sad that neither will be utilized.
Has anyone looked at our home schedule now, we essentially have one decent game and rest are crap. We will be lucky to average 40,000 fans at home minus the Nebraska game.

Convince that girl in your group who doesn't drink to go. You know the one I am sure, everyone has that person in their group at school. She is your driver.
The early 9am, is a joke. Remember the 11am games in the past? A 7am tailgate is never too early once that first beer goes down, so 9am is sleeping in.
Next, pack your car/van/whatever with as many people as possible 5 miles from the game. Park one car and that is less than $5 a person if there is just 5 people in the car.
Hope this helps. It sucks, but it is very do-able and worth it.

As for you thinking that Arrowhead is great stadium and KC is a great town... basically you need to get out more. KC is landfill and not even the indian guy shed a tear when Louis and Clark stopped in KC to dump their trash. Arrowhead, while loud for Chiefs games, is a old run down venue plain and simple so stop acting like its some great stadium.

We really got the raw end of the deal when our season basketball tickets were put up in the nose-bleeding rafters. I'm not even as mad about that, as I am about this. Worse move KU has done in quite awhile! For those who think it's a good idea obviously haven't been around long enough to know what works and doesn't.

And, I think the KU-OU game at Arrowhead decision was made to sell more tickets to OU people; probably thinking KU doesn't have a football fan base, we can at least make some money off of OU people.

The reason no OU people came all the way up for that game was the VENUE! I'm tired of hearing how great frickin' Arrowhead is. it's a tired old dump!! What's worse than that, it's in the middle of nowhere!! And I'll tell you when Memorial first started to become a great place to watch a football game--when it was built!!! It is nestled deep in one of the greatest college campuses in the nation, and is very close to three collegiate gameday essentials: bars, student housing, and sororities! Have you BEEN to a game at Memorial lately, KFoz? Hawk Football is finally starting to have a great gameday atmosphere and is creating it's own identity within KU Athletics. Gameday at Memorial is essential to the program's growth right now, and Lew-dew took it away for the most important game next season.
Who really loses out the most on this deal isn't the Lawrence Businesses, it is the students! They get one of their Gameday vs. Mizzou at Memorial experiences taken away and I feel very sorry for them. If I was a Junior this year, I'd be P*SSED! There is NO WAY this game's atmosphere is going to equal that of Memorial's. It's just not realistic to think that the same amount of students that would normally attend a game at Memorial would attend one at this new dump, and we're going to miss them.

Yes, I actually went to every home game last season. I am a college football fan, which means my interests are swayed by the actual event. I am sure you will be witty and challenge my manhood, but bars, student housing and sororities!!! do not ever enter my mind when it comes to attending KU football games. I go to watch a football game! The most essential part of the program's growth was the resignation of Nick Quartaro. The second will be the amenities to be constructed next to the football stadium. And, as I have posted before, the next head coach hiring. Your sophmoric support of the program can go on with or without a football game. I never mentioned Arrowhead being a great venue; I do not understand how Memorial in Lawrence is being touted as a great venue. It is not the Big House. I am not sure it ranks anywhere on anyone's list of great places to see a football game. The only great atmosphere I remember were the KUvs OU and K-State games towards the end of the Big 8, when we were competitive and finished in the top 10.

Have to agree with bmcmich1...A real fan loves and appreciates the home they play in. Memorial may not be as big or as popular, but I'd never look down upon it. A real fan wouldn't only remember a great atmosphere when the programs sucessful either. That's when the terms "bandwagon" and "fair weather fan" comes to mind. Bars, students, tailgating, and rivalries is what makes college sports so great. Sororities don't hurt either. Any other game besides one of our two main rivals and I'd have no problem with this. I'd also rather see this game played in Wichita State's old football stadium than at Arrowhead.

I think this is a horrible idea. Voluntarily putting a coach that has won 3 road games in the last five years on the road is stupid. Something that people forget is that the other big rivalry games that are played at a neutral site (Army/Navy, Red River Shootout, etc.) have been played at neutral sites for a long time. The Border War, excuse me Showdown, cannot be counted among these because of a general lack of national appeal.
How are we ever supposed to develop game day traditions and a healthy tailgating environment if we play our biggest game of the year in Missouri?

Rivithead, You do realize that 2 million over 2 years is better than 1 million over 2 years right?
As far as the gameday experience, if everyone is up in arms about it, why do they not go to more games? Maybe if there was better attendance at all the games, there would not be a need to go outside of Lawrence to recoup money.
Do the KU basketball fans only show up for the "good" games? the reason the atmosphere in Allen is electric and considered a great venue is because the fans show up EVERY game regardless of the opponent to support the TEAM every game, not just 1 or 2 a year. Again, I ask you where is all this support for the football team EVERY game? When the stadium is half empty, even for the conference games, where is the outcry? Are you really concerned about supporting the team, or are you concerned about getting liquored up and yelling at one team? You look around the conference and at the other teams schedules, and they are not much better, yet their fans show up for games!
As far as the home field advantage, KU fans have a much easier time getting there than Misery fans would, and should show up in full force each year, essientialy giving us a home game every year. that is if everyone can get over the inconvienence to support your team.
The other reason I think this is a good idea, is because many more people will be able to take their families. Lots of times a family of 4 or 5 can't afford 4 or 5 season tickets. This is an opportunity to buy a couple of extra tickets, tailgate with other Hawk fans as well as family and friends and still all be able to sit together and have a good time.

Change is always met with disgruntlment from people who fear it. The atmosphere wasn't right with the OU game because they simply weren't the right team to play in Arrowhead, but KU/MU is a very different situation. The teams are bitter rivals and the stadium is right in the middle. Each team will only have to bring about 40,000 fans to fill the stands. I think the rivalry is intense enough that both schools will easily bring their share.
I'm not going to try and argue with the people who think that it is a bad idea because they do have some valid points. However, my guess is that fans will be surprised at how fun this game day experience can be.
Pack the stands with Crimson and Blue and the experience can be as fun as it was at the Fort Worth Bowl (which anyone who went can attest was a total blast).

I don't understand the anti-Lew posts. It's his job to generate revenue for the university. Any bottom line entity whether it is for-profit or non-profit is obligated to do what is in their financial best interest. It's pure naivete to think otherwise. Whether this works or not remains to be seen but it seems like we are taking a small risk for what might be a huge windfall.
I think it might be easier to capitalize off of the basketball rivalry. Play their home and away conference games each year and schedule a "non-conference" game at the end of the regular season at Kemper.

I went to a couple SEC games this year and they would not hesitate to stay up all night if they had to to watch a rivalry game. Its time for KU fans to start taking football seriously. Its only 12 games a year, so get your butt out of bed and support the hawks!

I for one will attend the game and I will sit right on the border between the KANSAS fans and the little bitches from misery and will have a great time yelling at them and telling them to have a accident on the way back to columbia!
Its a bad Idea to take it out of Lawrence but its out of my hands.
I have supported the Jayhawks for many years now I didn't miss a game last year. I went to Lincoln, Toledo, Waco,Aimes, and columbia.
I will follow the Hawks all the way to Hell and back again!!
now if we could somehow arange for the game to be played in KC every other year on the evens im ok with that.
