Linebacker commits to Kansas

Kansas University's football team received another oral commitment Sunday - a rare linebacker.

The Jayhawks got their second known commitment from a linebacker in this class, a non-binding pledge from Justin Springer out of Los Fresnos, Texas, according to Rivals.com.

Springer had committed to Arizona State, but changed his mind after taking an official visit to KU over the weekend.

"I really like coach Mike Mallory," Springer told Rivals. "He is the linebacker coach and also the lead recruiter. He was a good linebacker when he played at Michigan."

Springer stands an imposing 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and changed his mind after committing to Arizona State less than a week ago. He had 154 tackles for Los Fresnos High, located in a small town in the southern tip of Texas.

Kansas now has 19 known commitments.

2 stars, but he has drawn comparison in his play to Brian Urlacher.

oh woo hoo. He's had comparisons to Urlacher. Like it's going to matter. If he play's like a 2 star, he's not going to do a thing.

2 stars or 3 stars is irrelevant. The whole high school player rating system is ridiculous.

Nick Reid didn't receive a single star as a high school QB out of Derby, and look at how that panned out.

I just hope that we get kids who are gamers, that want to play and are tough.

Agreed, stars don't mean crap...that is why I stated that he has drawn some comparisons to the play of Brian Urlacher. Watch his highlight videos on youtube, you will see that stars don't matter burntpuma.

5-A Second team all state in Texas and tallying 154 tackles his senior season is nothing to sneeze at, this kid is a stud who has come in under the radar.

By the way, if you want a better example than Nick Reid look at Aqib Talib. His high school coach has sent over a hundred kids to D-1 schools and I believe he said three to the NFL. When Talib was being recruited his coach said he had never seen a player as talented as him at the high school level. Unfortunately for the other schools who missed out on him, his numbers weren't that impressive because the other teams knew not to throw the ball anywhere near him.

Long story short, Talib was rated as a 2 star recruit, yet he just led the nation in passes defended in only his sophmore year.

I just watched the Justin Springer video on youtube and all I can say is holy freakin crap this kid is good!!!

He plays with an intensity you wouldn't believe. He's always running at full speed right to the play even when the rest of his team was fooled by misdirection, then when someone tries to block him he stops on a dime to make them run right past him and accelerates to make the tackle.

For anyone who wants to watch him he is a middle lineback and wears number 42, but he's pretty easy to pick out of the crowd as he always seems to be moving faster than anyone else on the screen.

Excellent job by the KU staff for stealing one hell of a recruit!!!
