Collins goes ‘ballin’

Freshman 'fabulous' for KU

Sherron Collins tilted his head to unveil a zig-zag pattern shaved into the side of his noggin.

"It doesn't signify anything. I do it all the time back home. It's my graphic design," Kansas University's freshman guard from Chicago said with a smile.

Looking physically as he did at Crane High School after an afternoon trip to the barbershop with Julian Wright and Rodrick Stewart, who opted for similar cuts, Collins on Monday night resembled the dominant McDonald's All-American he was on the prep level.

The 5-foot-11 jitterbug erupted for a career-high 23 points - including seven of KU's last nine points - in a thrilling 80-77 victory over Missouri in Allen Fieldhouse.

"That's the point guard that coach (Kurtis) Townsend and I saw just about every time he played in high school and in AAU games - in attack mode and aggressive," KU coach Bill Self said. "Tonight there was no thinking. He was just out there ballin'. I thought he was fabulous.

"We've had some unbelievable wins here where guys have taken games over. I don't know if I remember where one individual took over a game more in a big game like he did today. For a young kid, that's pretty strong."

Here's what Collins did to propel fifth-ranked KU (16-2 overall, 3-0 Big 12 Conference) past a gritty Missouri team (11-6, 0-4) that wiped out separate deficits of nine and eight points in the contest:

¢ He hit a one-hander in the paint and followed that with a three-pointer off a pass from Russell Robinson, turning a 72-71 deficit into a 76-72 lead at 1:41.

Audio clips

¢ Then, with KU up just 78-77, he cashed a running, driving layup with :32.4 left, losing a shoe in the process and playing defense the next possession with just one piece of footwear.

"Sherron was the man tonight. He's had a great attitude," Self said.

"Sherron was the MVP," noted sophomore Brandon Rush, who might have been runner-up for his defense on the last play of the game, an off-balance desperation three by Matt Lawrence as time ran out.

Collins accepted the title reluctantly.

"I didn't envision myself carrying the team. I know I'm capable of doing it, though," said Collins, who said he was unaware of the importance of the KU-MU rivalry until "coach got on us at halftime. My teammates did a good job giving me the ball the second half. I took it in my hands the last few minutes."

Another freshman, Darrell Arthur, also was big in crunch time, scoring six points in the last five minutes, including a bucket off a feed from Robinson that gave the Jayhawks a 78-75 lead with 58 seconds left.

"Julian, Russell and Sherron did a great job finding me slipping to the goal," said Arthur, who along with Collins scored 17 of KU's final 19 points. "I thought Sherron really stepped up big. He made a lot of open threes tonight."

In fact, he made four of seven threes on a night KU hit eight of 17 to MU's seven of 30.

"I don't think I'll stop feeling like a freshman. I wish I wasn't a freshman," Collins said with a grin.

"He'll screw up tomorrow just like everybody else. I'm proud of him, though," Self said.

One mess-up didn't cost the Jayhawks late in the game. Robinson grabbed a miss by Stefhon Hannah (15 points, 6-of-16 shooting) with 13 seconds left and KU up, 80-77.

He fired a pass downcourt to a wide-open Rush, but the pass sailed out of bounds, giving the Tigers one final possession.

"Gosh, he had a bad turnover late. We had the game won, and he threw the ball out of bounds," Self said. "(But) I thought Russell (seven assists, two three pointers made in three tries) stepped up today, and Brandon (16 points, seven boards) had a good game.

"Julian (Wright) : I didn't feel it was his best game, and he gets 10 rebounds and five assists. We had guys step up and make plays, and of course tonight everybody knows who that was."

Collins, of course.

Of the halftime talk (with KU up 40-39), that educated Collins to the rivalry, Self shrugged.

"I didn't say anything great," Self said. "We told them before the game Missouri would play better than their 0-3 record. We emphasized, 'You've got to want it more.'''

Self stressed the Jayhawks beat a team that also wanted it badly. Mizzou erased deficits of 32-23 and 58-50 and actually led 65-60 with nine minutes left following a 15-2 second-half run.

Those were two pretty good teams out there tonight," Self said. "That was more a Missouri team we've come to know. They took their act on the road and played very well. They played great. I knew it'd be a nip-and-tuck game."

KU will meet Texas Tech at 3 p.m. Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.

Well the Hawks pulled it out. I am proud that they keep on fighting but am disappointed that it seems as though we can come out fired up against "big time" teams and when there are teams not to be considered so, we come out flat. Hopefully these nail biters will have the team come together more and more and we will be very tough come tourny time. rock chalk baby!

Well, it did turn out to be a barn burner after all. Not what I expected and I would have loved to see us trounce MU and never give them a shot, but hats off to the Tigers for making it a game.

I agree with kellen813 about not coming out fired up against lesser opponents, but I am beginning to wonder if a lot of it is that we are probably one of every opponent's biggest games of the season. When you have a target like that on your back, people play big games against you and you have to whether the storm. Props to the Hawks for coming back from 5 down and not letting the momentum overwhelm them. I guess to look at it positively, we showed grit coming back and pulling out the 3 point victory.

As much as I hate MU, I must give them props for treating all fans to a highly contested battle.

we have won 10 straight! Bad teams dont do that, especially a 30 point win against a top 10 team. We have beaten 2 top 10 teams, which bad teams dont do. EVERY team plays close games. These are good games for us. And yes Jaybate, these games will help us in the ncaa tourney. As much knowledge as you seem to lack, you should realize that the Florida Gators in football, played several close games in the season, lost one, and whipped @$$ in the title game. I know its a different sport, but its the principal. Close games challenge you to see what you are made of. Mental toughness!

Excellent point. The mental errors are multiplied when you are exhausted and the hawks have been tested in the last week. Good to know that we can bring it together and win close ones against teams playing well.

And what about the explosive coming out party for Bimbo Collins? There is a lot of talk of him starting over RussRob, but just like Shady coming off of the bench, it would be better for team chemistry and overall moral to up his minutes rather than delegate a Jr (who is playing well) to the bench.

I know that our Name is highlighted on everyones schedule and that we will get their best shot. But yesterday, like all our loses, was more about us and not about them.

How are we gonna fair against Mizzou in Columbia? If we play liked we did last night, then the end result will end in a familiar scence were the Fans rush the court and the players "pop and flash" their jereys.

It all comes down to playing with consistency (free throws, limited turnovers, scoring from our Juniors and Sophomores) and most importantly, dictating our style of b-ball on our opponents...something we have not done in our (close) games against Iowa St. & Mizzou.

The only positive I took from yesterdays game was the break out game of Sherron Collins...When will he start over Russ Robb?

Good point Big Tamale, but you have to remember that most of our starting line up and guys coming off the bech are still freshman and sophmores. If KU would have played this game last year they probably would have lost, but little by little you can see our guys improving. But like you said, we CAN'T play like this in columbia, or we're gonna see lots of "jersey popping" and "court storming". A lot of yesterday can also be blamed on the refs. DA was getting a lot of junk calls on him all night. But the Hawks weathered the storm, and we came out with a "W".

notabandwagonfan- who is jaybate? If you are referring to me, so be it. Lack of knowledge? Seems like a backhanded slap to me, or a cheap shot. If you are referring to me, I think you should take your KU blinders off and realize you could have easily also recalled last season, where the Hawks won some very close games throughout the season, then bailed out to Bradley in the 1st round of the NCAAs. I agree that it develops mental toughness, but it also creates a mindset that you can flip a switch and pull every game out at the end. It works both ways man. Now take your medicine and don't blow a gasket every time someone doesn't rain down extreme praise on our Hawks.

I don't think Collins will start over Robinson unless Russell's A-T ratio really takes a dive. Russell is the steady hand you want in the opening minutes, the setup guy, Sherron is more pure scoring and flash. Our team is all the more fearsome with big scorers coming off the bench. The playing time between Sherron and Russell will probably continue to equalize, but I don't think a change in the starting lineup is good for the team.

What game were people watching? KU came out flat? They scored 40 points each half; 2 points a minute. It was run and gun. KU had nothing but speed and intensity. MU played a good game and KU didn't get it done on defense. Part of our defensive problems was MU's speed and intensity.

You can't keep saying KU played flat or down to the compitition. Florida could easily say that when we beat them. KU missed some shots yes, but that isn't because of intensity, it was because the ball bounced that way. Good game MU. Great win KU.

I hated to see the game as close as it was, but it's also good to know that they can keep their composer and win in close games.

You can't expect every conference game to be a 30 point blowout a-la Okie St. Big XII play is pretty intense, especially if you have 'Kansas' across your chest. I think it is great that we are being tested like this because you can almost guarantee there will be games like last night's in the NCAA Tournament, and for the team to know that they pulled it out time after time in tight conference games is HUGE for their confidence in March.

As for those who say that we cannot come out and play like that at Mizzou and win, I have to disagree. I honestly think we saw the absolute best Mizzou team out there last night--I don't think they can play much better than that in Lawrence OR Columbia. I also think that we didn't play our best game, and we still won. Great teams find a way to win, bottom line--and the 'Hawks seem to be doing a lot of that lately.

Something no one has mentioned was how great Robinson and Collins play together. I don't think it's a question of robinson being replaced by Collins, and I just don't see Robinson not starting. He is too solid defensively, and too good at protecting the ball to lose his spot (and that includes next year). Together, the two play very well together, as Robinson can defensively play against the 2, IE: less agressive ball handlers and will likely get more steals when Collins is on the court. Offensively, (and this happened alot last night), one or the other is able to disapear in a defense, and appear while the other is fast breaking for the quick dish out. How many of collins' and russell's shots last night were the result of dishes from the other.

Sure looked like Jim Bain out their whistling DA. During Arthur's double-block the ref was already stepping onto the court before DA even went up for the second block...he just "knew" Darrell had to have fouled. On the other end earlier, he just stood there while DA was held then fouled while having the ball stripped from behind as Arthur had an open lane to the basket.

KU played an outstanding game against what I would call a "desperate-to-win-at-all-costs" MU team. 40 minutes of Hell was more like 40 minutes of attempted mugging. KU had more foul shots and thankfully made enough of them to win!

Great game in a great rivalry!

bmcmich1, thanks for the link to Posnanski. I love to read him and haven't done it enough lately. I guess he really did outdo himself on this one.

To those who want Collins over Robinson. It won't happen as playing time among the three guards is very equal now. Last night Chalmers didn't have one of his better games and Collins had his best one. The next time maybe Robinson won't have a good game and Collins will have a bad one and it will continue that way. Self has said that Collins reminds him so much of the two great guards he had at Illinois and it won't always work to be as agressive as he was last night but last night it sure did work out very good.

I'd just like to say that even though we've been able to turn the switch on at the end of games, like the ones against Mizzou and Iowa State, I think that'll hurt us more than help us. They're going to get comfortable with that and then when the tourney comes around, they're going to realize it's not that easy when the whole season is on the line to just flip a switch against a mediocre team. Iowa St. and Mizzou will not make any noise in the NCAA tourney, we HAVE to handle them and not just rely on late game heroics.

For the most part I have enjoyed reading these emails about the various KU Basketball articles. Some have more insight than most media articles I have read while others are just plain goofy. I have been a fan for a long time and have enjoyed and suffered through many KU/MU games over the years. I have been going to games ever since my uncle Leo took me to see Wilt Chamberlin play. My favorite memory is the time Bill Bridges took on the entire Missouri Band over in Columbia back in the early 60's. This my first email though. I do think KURush1530 has reason to be concerned but I also think close games now can steel the team for the future. One question I have is has anyone noticed that Self has commitments from two players for next year but only has one scholarship available. If either Arthur, Rush or Chambers does not go Pro(and none appear to have played well enough this year to do that yet) we could be in a bind.

lalawguy (anonymous) says...

Personally, Phil, I am not too concerned if KU ends up recruiting more players than it has available scholarships. There are always players towards the end of the bench willing to give up the scholarship just for a chance to remain on the team. It always works out.

NavyHawk makes a good point about the officiating of this game. This one was the most questionable I have seen all year. I suggest to anyone who Tivo-ed the game to watch the last few possessions under the baskets (on both ends). Pause it on the shots. Arthur had a few clean blocks that were quickly called fouls, while both DA and Collins were mugged while attempting layups, yet no calls were made.

Jayhawk86 (anonymous) says...

Well, it was a win. Personally I think that the refs were pretty poor.
Maybe thats just me as a biased fan.

I don't really think that just because the game was close, that we were "flat". I mean we did score 80 points, and Misery played their best game all season. Maybe it was partly due to the fact that KU played 3 games in 6 days. Not a lot of down time and not much rest being had.

But given all that, they came out with a win in a rivalry game and that is huge.

Sometimes it seems that I forget that there are no seniors on this team and no one to "educate" them on this rivalry. Only after they go to that god forsaken place they call a university and get treated like crap while they get swore at and spit on and have things thrown at them will they really know what that rivalry is like.

Anyway, Good job and go hawks!

notknowledgewagonfan,

Are you disputing KU barely won in their own crib on a night when an 0-2 opponent shot 23% from trey land (an opponent thrashed recently by KSU no less)?

Or are you disputing that KU's half court offense remains inept about half the trips up the floor?

Or are you disputing that Brandon has lost his inside game of late and that it is going to hurt us, if he doesn't get it back, or if Self doesn't start routing more of the mid range offense through the big men?

Or are you disputing that Sherron still can't stay with his man when he tries to play belly button defense?

Or are you disputing that I think Sherron is proving to be a formidable offensive threat?

Or are you disputing that I think RussRob had an excellent game and made a mistake at the end of the game that Self should have minimized to try to continue to raise his confidence?

What exactly are you disputing, notaknowledgewagonfan?

P.S.: Regarding how helpful this win will be come NCAA tourney time--oh, yes, a close victory over an alsoran on our home floor with the opponent shooting 23% from trey land is going to really boost us over the threshold of being able to beat the Bucknells and Bradleys of the world.

Will this MU game massively boost our RPI? Wow, I bet it will be the difference in whether we get in the Big Dance, or get left home!

Jaybate, after every game you come in here with "ifs". If that team shot better or if that team did this or if that team did that. at what point are you going to realize that maybe the play of our players has something to do with the percentages you always want to bring up.

How about If Chalmers plays his regular game we win going away, or if Brandon Makes a few more free throws we win easily or if we hold them to only 35% shooting instead of 39% we really woop them.

Why always dealing with "ifs"?

The fact is we held a Rivalry opponent to less than 40% shooting, scored 80 points on as you would call "inept offense" and came out with a win.

By the way, I think Brandons inside game is fine, I just wish he would shoot a little better from the free throw line since he does seem to be getting fouled often when he drives to the hoop. Is "as of late" 1 game, 2 games or a stretch of games? I am not following that.

I do try to stay as positive as possible, but I do have to mention that even though Sasha is staying out of foul trouble, I think maybe his defense on the other teams big man leaves a little to be desired these past few games. Maybe its just me being too critical.

People, look. I think some of you are so relieved with the win and the avoidance of trauma at the hands of Mizzou that you are satisfied in the post-game euphoria not to find anything constructive to say about how this team could improve. Here's the point, and let me make it very clear: there are only a couple of other games this year where Kansas played marginally worse than they did against Mizzou. The stats bear that out. So look, if a guy cant come in here and offer constructive criticism when its due, then when can he?

Are we all for censorship now or what? The fact is KU could have played better against Mizzou. It was sloppy all over the place. But I guess the school of thought here is that you join the "amen chorus" even in the face of bad play; anything short of that and youre gonna get burned at the stake in these posts. Well I say ridiculous! Nice to get a win...granted. Everyone agrees on that. But HOW are we winning? If a team fails to examine its shortcomings, then it cant improve. I never thought Id defend jaybate, but the man has a point. There are holes right now that need to be fixed. You are disputing the fact that I seem to have very little knowledge of basketball.

Well, thank you kindly, notabrainwagonfan. I didn't expect you to dispute the fact that I have very little knowledge of basketball. I expected you to assert that I had very little knowledge of basketball. I really do appreciate you disputing the fact that I have very little knowledge of basketball, because I too dispute the fact that I have very little knowledge of basketball. Put another way, I agree with you that it is not a fact that I have very little knowledge of basketball. I would even go so far as to assert that I have an adequate knowledge of basketball. And in comparison to you, I might seem almost Einsteinian at times, but then a gnat always seems enormous next to a paramecium.

And I would be dishonoring several of my old English professors at Wescoe, if I did not mention that you wield English with formidable incompetance. Is it your second or third language behind igpay atinlay? Do tell.

Now, all of the above is just a put on, a parody of your fatuous impression of me. I speak and write as an adult. Try it sometime. It comes naturally, if you let it.

Here's a bottom line for you. Stop ad homming me, stop making yourself look like a jackass, stop speaking with the basketball insight of a Mizzou grad, and start talking about basketball. If you have one ounce of self respect left and any respect for the grand tradition of Kansas basketball, you'll stop sullying yourself and it with comments and language that make it appear you not only didn't attend the university, but also swallowed something toxic during your formative years.

Talk basketball, man, its such a great game. You CAN do it.

Am I wrong about this? It seems that this team misses more second free throws than any team I've ever watched. I might simply be looking for this, but I really wish I had the stats in front of me. There's little excuse for missing the second free throw... and yet, it seems that this entire team has a problem with the second one. Is there anyone out there with the stats on this?

wow masterjaybate! I think your english professors would be very proud of the way you use those big words. And yes, i can talk basketball with anyone who isn't such a one-sided idiot. Everytime you post something on here, its negativity. I have never seen a posititive post from you, on anything. Thats right, i've never seen you post after the 2 biggest wins of the year. I live in the real world man, and apparently you watch completely different games than the rest of us do. I have played basketball and I know its nearly impossible to play 3 games in 6 days and look your damned best. The fact remains, we won! Thats all that matters! Close games build mental toughness!

Let's get off jaybate or anyone else we don't agree with. If we don;t have contraian opinions how do we grow :-)!

My concern with this team, is that we are up and down. Too often we let the other team hang around and hope to winwith good defense and athleticism in the last few minutes.

We need a kill instinct. I have only seen this against OSU and FLA this year. I remember the last two NCAAs and where we were flat and thought we could pull it out in the second half against Bradley and Bucknell.

This team has a similar situation, except it has shown up off and on all year. May be we will get this out of our system before NCAAs!

go hawks!

Anyone notice that when MU went on 15-2 run and we had 4 TOs during this run that Coach Self was not succcessful in changing or regaining momentum?

TV tiemouts make it very hard for the underdog to maintain momentum, but MU certainly had it for this 4 minute or so run.

I would have throught that KU shoud have goen to a zone or applied more full court pressure to try and mix up the MU charge. MU did not shoot well from 3FG land and KU was in near foul trouble (I think 3-4 players ended up with 4 fouls). The game was raw and rough and merhaps a little zone would have changed the pace of game.

MUs gruard play showed that they prefered to drive rather than ut up the trey in this game.

Lebowski (anonymous) says...

Jaybate. I've grown very concerned for you. This is not just to dispel any silly notion that everyone has an opinion that should be respected. It is intended more to reinforce any doubt you may or may not have about this fact. Only by repetition can you start to understand....

You are an idiot.

If this is unclear... it means "ignorant person". Ignorant, in this sense, meaning you lack knowledge in the particular subject matter. If I seem redundant in calling you an idiot all the time, it's because that redundancy is a very good teaching tool. Nothing better reinforces an important point of emphasis better than repeating it over, and over, and over again. You're an idiot. You ARE an idiot. Say it outloud. "I jaybate, am an idiot" Say it in the mirror. Sing it in the shower. Say it when you pray. "Thank you Lord, for helping me realize that I'm an idiot" Record yourself saying it and play it over and over again. Even play it when you're in the car and when you go to sleep at night. Eventually, you'll finally accept the fact you're an idiot, and we all know that acceptance is the first step. You have to get past the denial. Only after you have accepted the fact that you're an idiot, can you CHANGE that fact.

Disputing what an ignorant person says is a futile effort. If they wanted to learn, they'd shut up and listen. Listening, and practice (through repetition) is how you learn. In your case, you're too busy flapping your ignorant lips to learn anything. Instead, you're teaching. Unfortunately, all you're teaching everyone is what an ignorant person you are. (which again brings me back to the fact that you are an idiot!) If any of my friends were as ignorant as you, I'd tell them the same thing, in hopes that maybe they'd try to change that fact by shutting their pie-hole and trying to learn something from all the people who actually KNOW something. Actually talking to you about what you say doesn't help the problem. It's like throwing a big party for an alcoholic and buying him a bunch of shots, and then the next day telling him that he's got a problem. It doesn't work like that. You can't be a part of the problem AND a part of the solution. And if you are NOT part of the solution, then you are a part of the problem. Which is why I'm going to all this trouble! I want to help you!!!

You're an idiot. Learn that, and then maybe we can fix it so you can actually say something that people can respect.

You're an idiot, you're an idiot, you're an idiot.

Got that yet?

Ah, leBOYski nee faux Dude,

Perhaps your weakest effort yet. No argument what so ever, just ad homs, pure in its vapidness. You used to try to fake arguments between the ad homs.

Petit Leeb, it is I who grow concerned for you, though my concern for you, as you might guess, is barely one micron deep.

Either you are cracking up from keyboard onanism, or you LIKE supervision and discipline.

Well, my little hoops supplicant, I have decided to refuse you.

Tonight, and henceforth, you must go back to one of those pay for play places that keyboard onanistas sometimes frequent.

My insincere advice?

Stop sleeping with your keyboard and repeat after me, "I will not say 'ignorant' or 'stupid' or 'got that yet?' anymore. And I will not backslide anymore and come looking for discipline from jaybate."

No, on second thought, I'm an optimist. Leo Buscaglia was an existential nihilist compared to me. I'm not giving up on you, Lebowdownandbegski. You can be brought back to some semblance of man or womanhood. I just know it. You can be rehabbed and become a thoughtful, respected contributing member of the KU nation. I can't turn my back on a lost Jayhawk soul, who wants to be a KU fan, even if he sounds like a gargling mendicant most of the time.

I love you, LeDufusski, and I want everyone else, to love you too.

Here beginneth the intervention.

notaknowledgefan,

I am positive about one thing where you are concerned: you need to take a night course in English composition.

And I quote:

"And yes, i can talk basketball with anyone who isn't such a one-sided idiot."

Uh, how many sides do most idiots have, notaknowledgewagonfan?

Where did you learn to think and write this way?

Was it while you were playing an incredible THREE games in FIVE days? Did the strain of it break you down and you were never able to recover from it?

THREE games in FIVE days?

Why that's just incredible. No team has EVER had to play...THREE games in FIVE days!

And you played basketball?

You mean you're still alive after playing THREE games in FIVE days?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No way. No one has ever lived after playing...THREE games in FIVE days!!!!

You must be superhuman!

Why, you must be...notahumanwagonfan!!!!!

Can't we cut the ad homs, agree to disagree, and get back to basketball?

I feel like I'm sword fighting with a guy with a toothpick.

THREE games in FIVE days!!!!!!!

ohmygawd!!!!

I believe idiots continually take things way out of context. Ok, then you would be an idiot. I dont think you ever even played basketball in your entire life. It makes me wonder if you ever even actually leave your computer. My comments were simply this: Nobody is fresh with 3 games in 7 days. Very few nba teams are, let alone college! Get a life dumbass!

Notabandwagonfan... we need to have an intervention with jaybate. We have to stay positive in our efforts to get him through his state of denial. I believe no one is permanently condemned to idiocy. I believe he can change with our help!!! I have a dream that one day, with our help, he may no longer be an idiot!

Then again, after those last two posts, it may be a lost cause.

notanenglishmajorfan, er, notabandwagonfan,

And I quote:

"I dont think you ever even played basketball in your entire life"--notabandwagonfan

Aside from sounding positively infantile, once again, you are wrong. I played yesterday at the Y. Did you?

Now, what exactly is the difference between "ever" and "ever even?" Likewise what is the difference between "life" and "entire life"? These I gotta hear.

Oh, and make a comment about hoops so I can comment on it.
