Some thoughts...from Allen Fieldhouse

Gary Bedore, Journal-World KU men’s basketball beat writer

“Sasha Kaun had his best game of the season which had to come at a good time for him. His confidence seemed to be wavering befroe he exploded for a 15-point effort. It was sloppy early but KU took control with that 24-1 run and blew out the Blue Demons. Lot s of lobs and dunks made for a pretty exciting day for the fans.”

Tom Keegan, Journal-World sports editor

“Skill, athleticism, depth, savvy, intensity, maturity. Kansas had all that in abundance Saturday afternoon in a game that felt more like a 40-point blowout. This team is a really good team that’s going to better, provided the players coming off of injuries devellop as expected.”

Ryan Greene, KUSports.com editor

“Sasha Kaun had a great game, yes, but I thought the beast today was Mario Chalmers. The dude’s stat line was unreal. The junior do-it-all guard finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and a career-high seven steals. The return of Sherron Collins was good, too, but don’t forget that on both ends of the floor, Chalmers is this team’s motor that keeps the machine running smoothly.”

Inside the numbers

15: Sasha Kaun had lost his starting spot a couple weeks back and coming off the bunch didn’t help him snap out of his funk, either. Until today. Kaun got into a nice rhythm early in the second half, scoring nine points in highlight-reel fashion. All of this came after Bill Self removed him from the game in the first half and instead of yelling at him tried an incouraging tongue.

7: Mario Chalmers played a huge role in the Jayhawks’ crippling run in the first half with a pair of his seven steals leading to crowd-pleasing transition buckets. The career high in swipes highlighted a big day for the junior guard.

10: The Jayhawks again held an opponent under 50 percent from the floor, and this time it involved shutting down the Blue Demons’ top scorer: senior guard Draelon Burns. Burns finished with 10 points, but none of them meant much, with all 10 coming in the second half with the game decided.

3: Brandon Rush has struggled from deep since returning to the lineup, but was given ample opportunities to get back on track Saturday. He took advantage, hitting 3-of-7 attempts en route to a 13-point performance.

Just in case you missed it...

Sherron Collins wasn’t necessarily his old self just yet, but back a couple weeks ahead of schedule from surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot, the sophomore guard scored six points on a pair of threes in 13 minutes on the floor. His return makes a deep team deeper, and now he has a week to rest until KU’s next game.

Hopefully you didn’t miss it...

The Jayhawks played well today in large part because they looked like a team having fun on the floor. There were plenty of highlights to go around, and the biggest of all may have been Darnell Jackson’s alley-oop throwdown on a lob from Mario Chalmers in the second half. After getting sucked into a pace they didn’t want to be playing at and trailing DePaul 13-12, KU forced the pace to pickup defensively, running the Demons out of the gym.

They said it...

Sasha Kaun on his breakout game: “He just said don’t get down, don’t put your head down, just regroup. He was pretty positive about it...That’s one of the biggest things - I need to be more active and just get more energy up when I’m playing on the court, and then good things will happen. And that’s what happened today. I was active, I wasn’t slow, that’s the result of it, I think.”

Sherron Collins on how he’s feeling: “I’m about in the range from 85-90 (percent)...I just was in the cast for those two-and-a-half weeks, and didn’t use (my leg) at all, so now just trying to fire back off of it, it’s just weak. So basically I’ve just got to get my quad back firing. Once my quad fires, I’ll be all right.”

Sherron Collins on Sasha Kaun: “We knew Sasha, it was coming from him. He deserves it. Sasha works hard, good attitude, he just wasn’t playing too good. Now that he broke out, I think we’re gonna get even better.

Russell Robinson on Sasha Kaun: “Today, I hope he didn’t tease us. He can play like that every day. We’ve just got to get him going, get him in that mindset.”

Bill Self on Sasha Kaun: “He played good, didn’t he? Got off to a terrible start. I took him out and he was so down. I didn’t know how he would respond when he went back in, but guys did a good job getting him the ball, but after he got his first couple of baskets got a lot of confidence, played with some fire, and I thought he looked great.”

Bill Self on Sherron Collins: “He’s pointed to this game since he had the surgery - ‘I got to get back for DePaul.’ What we thought, that this past Monday he would be back practicing full speed. And he just hadn’t been able to....I told him just go out there and play safe. That’s not really his game, but don’t try to do anything initially and I’m going to play you two-three minutes at a time, and we’ll kind of see where it goes. I think he’s a little frustrated because his body won’t do what the brain tells it to do, but that’s only going to be a few days from now until it does that.”

Bill Self on Mario Chalmers: “Today was the best game he’s played all year - by far. And he’s played some other good games, but by far. He impacted the game today by doing a little bit of everything. Best anticipator I’ve ever coached, defensively.”

Does this mean we need to put Chalmers on the Triple-Double Watch: the accomplishment that has never occurred by a Kansas player? He'd be a good candidate for it.

We blew them out, because:
a) our guards played like absolute men;
b) Kaun discovered how to play basketball, and
c) Jackson continued to be the bulwark of the inside.

But, YOO-HOOO! The out reebed us by five!

Comments...

Kahn: It wasn't just Kahn's break out game this season. And it wasn't just his numbers, which were simply what they ought to be each game. It was that this was the first time in all his years at KU that he really looked like a player instead of a project. When he came back from the benching, his play was fluid, integrated. Sasha is not a machine. He will not be that way every game, but I believe he now has a benchmark he can recall about what really playing (and not working at) basketball is. He gets it now. He now knows what he doesn't know. Before today he didn't know what he didn't know.

Arthur: Arthur just never seems to be totally alert and sharp, even on his good games, and this wasn't one of them. There's a gap between his talent/skills and his perfomance. We don't need a big to shoot 6 of 12. We can get that from guards. What gives? Zero rebounds? Its like there's no beast in him. He increasingly looks like a player who can either score, or rebound, but not do both, unless its a cupcake opponent. It may be time for Kaun and Jackson, the experienced men, to start and Arthur to come off the bench to give some quick scoring, until he finds his eye of the tiger. If Kahn were a 15/7 guy, as he should be, Arthur would already be coming off the bench.

Chalmers: Mario has quietly become the man of this team. Good for him. Its got to be tough playing under your dad's nose. And I don't know if I've ever seen a coach ride a player harder than Self road Mario last year from mid Decembr to late February. Mario took it in the chops last summer for the international team rejection. Its all seemed to make him one tough customer. Lucky us. And what's the KU record for most steals in a game? Seven sounds close.

Rush: The off shooting is not the issue. 2 reebs in 29 minutes doesn't cut it from the 3 in our rebounding scheme. Pay your freaking tickets and work on that leg, or you're going to be back here AGAIN next year, still working on your left hand. Oh, and by the way, I still think you're our best player, if you can ever get the leg back.

Cole: Self is really bringing him along SLOOOOOOOOW! But he keeps showing good things.

Robinson had his season high for assists. The announcer said it when he reached 9. I don't know if he got more after that.

Triple double? He wasn't too far away from a quadruple double...couple more assists steals and rebounds and were talking about a real accomplishment.

Ah, Sasha! Congrats on showing the critics that they are once again wrong. I think we all need to have a little more faith in our players, and not be so quick to criticize and cut them down.
They all try. They all put their heart and soul into this sport, and this school. Let's support them and lift them up when they are down. And, then, carry them on our shoulders when they are at their best!
Rock Chalk, and happy holidays!

Im watching SportsCenter on ESPN and this Cindy Brunson's got a face like a bulldog, but below the neck she's hotter than sizzling bacon. Im tellin' the truth...I ain't lyin!

Theres a week lull in the schedule now and hopefully the rest will allow our guys to heal a little. Andrea Hudy is suddenly the most important person to Kansas basketball.

Who's hotter between Andrea Hudy and Bonnie Hinrickson? I dont know...its close.

I thought I saw Coach Self mouth "thats a highlight" to Darnell Jackson on the bench after his dunk. I agree with the announcers, that if Darnell's performance stays consistent he'd make a good case to get drafted. At this point playing like they are, I cant imagine what Arthurs justification would be over Jackson in terms of going to the NBA. Fact is, I hope they ALL make it!

I know why Connor doesnt play more now. His defense--if you can call it that--was absolutely atrocious in the final minutes. He got dribbled around several times as if he wasnt even there. Still, Coach had him defending the point guard. Um...WHY??? There are many quick two guards though so Im not sure this is an acceptable mitigation. Kinda in the mode of Luke Axtell, wasnt he? Lots of offensive prowess but a defensive liability. I still like this kid though. Self should have let him in the game much earlier if you ask me. It was well in hand long before Teahan got in.

Big ups to our big men this game. "Thank you, Sir, Ill have another..."

Peace and Chicken Grease....

Russell showed us some beast-mode, too. An all star swat & a follow-up dunk. Nice to see him shine.

Robinson broke his personal assist record with 9.

I enjoy all the critiques and praise of players from game to game. Game to game "my" man is Darnell Jackson. He brings intensity to every minute. There's no critique of him from game to game, only praise. My heart always goes out to the blue collar player but he is more than that this year. To work that hard in the off season to improve shows his character. He's a little undersized for the "4" position in the NBA but so have been others (living in Phoenix, Chas. Barkley comes immediately to mind). Darnell is the Man in our household.

I think Wilt had some triple doubles as a Jayhawk. However, I am not sure they kept stats on all the stuff they do now.

Ya, baby. Nothing but love for Darnell! Saw his mom on the telecast--she has got to be a proud lady!
