Rush apologetic about arrest

Kansas University junior Brandon Rush, who on Thursday was arrested on two outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court on traffic violations, on Friday morning spoke about the matter.

"It was all my fault," Rush said before practice. "I wasn't being responsible. Coach (Bill Self) always says take care of our responsibilities. I just got confused on the (court) dates, never showed up on the court date. That's what happens. I went in there too late."

He said he showed at court trying to take care of both warrants.

"I was trying to pay both of them. It didn't work out that way. I was surprised," he said of his arrest.

He added: "I'm sorry for causing a distraction for our team so we can't focus on this game ahead of us Saturday (against DePaul)."

Rush will appear in court again on Wednesday.

"I've got another court date set up. I plan to attend that one," he said.

They should've let him just pay the fine(s). What a bunch of bureaucratic nonsense.

Why arrest a guy who shows up to make good? Jack@$$es.

Brandon, you can use this to learn, or simply repeat the behavior. Not all that many of us have been hauled off in handcuffs, but all of us have made stupid mistakes. We still do. But growing up is about learning to limit those bad decisions and understand that our actions have consequences. At least the original infractions are not too serious. Everyone (OK, most everyone) gets a traffic ticket once in a while.

I met you at the Holiday Camp with my kids during your freshman year. I was impressed at your wonderful personality and gracious manner. You certainly did not act like a superstar. You have worked too hard and come too far in your recovery to fail by not following society's rules. Learn that, and the sky is the limit. We are all part of a team in one way or another.

Luke Winn of SportsIllustrated has his new college hoops power rankings out and his justification for bumping Texas so high also negates why he dropped the JHawks one spot. It just doesn't make sense.

Yeah, no kidding JayCeph, they should have just let him pay the fines & be done. Especially in a town as liberal as Lawrence, you wouldn't expect them to be so strict about minor traffic violations.

Oh yeah, I agree, that makes no sense to drop us 1 spot in that sports illustrated article.

I disagree with the No. 1 Texas rankings, but what I really don't understand is: 1) Kansas beats a solid USC team by 4 points in regulation at USC, 2) Memphis also beats USC two days later by 4, except that it is in overtime and at a neutral site, and somehow Kansas should be rated below Memphis. This is true for every poll. How can any voter justify putting Memphis above KU?

I think the LPD did it by the book in this one strictly because it was Brandon Rush. If word gets out that there was a bench warrant for Rush and they just let him pay his fines since he showed up at the courthouse, the haters would be screaming about favortism shown to athletes. So they abandoned common sense and played it straight. This type of thinking actually puts athletes under more scrutiny because people don't want to give the perception that they are favoring athletes, so they go the opposite way on it.

At least Rush realized his mistake and tried to make it right. Hopefully he can take care of this situation from here and go on about his business.

Russ Rob has said "I represent the University of Kansas."

Now, I bet every player on the team and perhaps every athlete at KU will sit up and take notice.

Who cares where we're ranked now. Who cares about Memphis? Who cares about Texas? Haven't we seen what happens when we are ranked #1, or begin the season #1 in hoops. 1952 aside, not once have we won the national championship during one of those years. Recall Bucknell? Preseason ranking, #1. Haven't we been #1 enough the last few years? Even in 1957, essentially #1 all year with the greatest player of all time, look what happened (of course an entry pass that was higher than Wilt's elbow would have won the national championship for us, but that's a sidenote now). Let them keep us at 4th as long as they want. The April 8th poll is the only one we should care about. The only thing that matters is the next game. If we, the fan base, and the basketball team, as well as the KU coaching staff, can't wrap their heads around that concept, there is no way we can win 6 in a row. "Only the next game matters" should be Self's credo this year. RCJ.

The deal with Rush is way over-blown. Someone down there at that station certainly does not like Kansas basketball. It could have been handled so much better. However, I hope it has a very positive effect on the team and all players beomce determined not to do anything this season that jeopardizes the potential of a great seson.

I agree 100...who cares about rankings at this point? Unlike the fraud that is college football, this will all be settled on the court in March.

JayCeph (anonymous) says...

Its not the rankings per se that I care about... its the justification for bumping the teams around that baffles me. I personally don't care about being ranked 1 or 100 but if winning on an opponent's floor in front of their own crowd is so important, why did KU drop?

The only thing I was pointing out was the inconsistency in the rationale.

I can't believe he would put others in jeopardy by not obeying traffic laws - then just blows off the court dates. Completely ridiculous - I think they should kick him off the team and make him repay his scholarship and the "100k" he duked us for for his knee surgery. This is a travesty and embarrassment to the university. BH Born doesn't get enough respect either.

Don't be too hard on the LPD. This situation might have been out of their hands. When a warrant is issued, it becomes a completly new violation.
It's kind of like contempt of court. Where it has been blown out of proportion is here and in the media.

Rankings, schmankings...

Dont really matter. As long as we are seeded high in the tournament come seasons end, thats all I care about. And even that is an arbitrary matter: a championship team should be able to ride the wave no matter who they put in front of it.

No offense, but one mans synopsis doesnt upset me...even if his rationale is bass ackwards.

regarding Brandons being arrested, this should be the party line: we shouldnt excuse him, but neither should we make too much of this.

Lets be real, for a minute. Brandon Rush didnt beat up his girlfriend like CJ Giles. Neither was he involved in a stabbing incident like JR Giddens. His offense doesnt rise to the level of the misgivings of these former Jayhawks under Bill Self.

however...

i for one thought it was appropriate that Paris Hilton serve time, as well as Lindsay Lohan. Some may argue they got off easy, but that is not my point. My point is simply this: celebrity doesnt give one standing above the law. OJ beat a murder wrap, for Gods sake! Was that right?

The Lawrence PD did what they should have. Brandon committed an offense, and appropriately this will play out in the legal system. He had an idiot moment and will pay for it. But please, lets not make too much of this. This is traffic court, after all. He wasnt drinking nor did he put anyone's life, property or well-being in jeopardy.

Nowhere else to talk about this so I guess Ill post this here.

Dont look now, but 8 games into the season, the highly tauted Kansas State Wildcats led by Michael Beasley stands at a paltry 5-3 record, including back-to-back losses at the hands of Oregon at home and at unranked Notre Dame. They've now limped out of the rankings and have a strong Big XII schedule to compete against with the likes of Kansas, Texas, Texas A/M, and Oklahoma (whose only two losses happen to be to Memphis and USC). We're talking non-conference, people!!!

To add insult to injury I hear the toilet facilities are in disrepair at Bramlage and players have resorted to urinating into towels benchside while the game is in progress. Can you say "trainwreck"?

I agree with the PODcasters, that Frank Martin doesnt look confident as coach of this bunch. Like its all too much for him or something. He looks about as comfortable as a black man at a Klan Rally, doesnt he? Incidentally I can say that, being African-American myself so please dont burn me in effigy or make me apologize publicly like Don Imus (who I hear resumed public radio broadcasting on Monday).

I'm going out on a limb here and saying Kansas State may end up a bubble team. Nobody may see that now, but Im telling you this team is NOT playing together. Im looking forward to blacking out another KSU "blackout" as they perpetuate their delusions of grandeur about beating Kansas this year.

Lets face it: even with Beasley, KState sucks!
