Jayhawks move up one spot in polls

AP moves KU up to #3

The Kansas men's basketball team moves up one spot to #3 in the land after knocking off USC on Sunday. KU makes the jump following Texas' win over former #1 UCLA.

Texas' win at UCLA caused the first change this season in the top five teams in The Associated Press' college basketball poll.

North Carolina was No. 1 Monday, as it has been since the preseason poll, but Memphis and Kansas both moved up one spot to second and third, while Texas used its win over UCLA to vault from eighth to fourth.

Georgetown remained fifth, Duke moved up one spot to sixth and UCLA dropped five places after the 63-61 home loss to the Longhorns on Sunday.

The Tar Heels (7-0), who won road games against Ohio State and Kentucky last week, received 45 first-place votes and 1,769 points from the 72-member national media panel.

Memphis (6-0), which beat Austin Peay in its only game last week, was No. 1 on 22 ballots and had 1,717 points.

On the surface, it doesn't appear there's going to be a heck of a lot of change in the top 5 this season. Then again, if college football told us anything this season, it's not to put too much stock into being at the top of the polls.

How many losses do you think KU can afford in Big 12 play and still win the regular season title? Who's really got a legitimate shot to beat us? Texas and aTm are pretty good and we play both at their places.

For all the hype, I don't really think KSU is that good. Mizzou will scrap with us but we should win those games.

We play OU and Tech at The Phog.

I know it's early, but how do you project the Big 12 season?

I think that at 13-3 in conference we would probably get a share of the title. 14-2 would win it outright. Obviously Texas A&M and Texas are the toughest two conference opponents we will face. I can't see the jayhawks losing at home this year, especially with Sherron Collins healthy. I think we will split the Texas, Texas A&M games and possibly lose one unforeseen conference game on the road. That would put us at 14-2 and probably champions of the Big 12.

I think that unforseen game that we lose might be at Nebraska this year. Nebraska looked actually good against Arizona State this past weekend. Man, to solidfy our seed it would be awesome to win against Texas and A&M this year, but that's going to be tough. I think we match up well against Texas so I don't think that's really going to be a test. I would love to beat A&M, but they are tough. They should have not lost to Arizona. They had a mental collapse in the second half and they got lazy. Don't expect that to happen against Kansas. I think 15-1 is possible, but 13-3 is realistic. There could be a couple of sleepers.

I worry about K-State because they are much more talented than they have been (look at the last decade of rosters and point to even one guy that had legitimate NBA aspirations) and they will give us their best game.

The thing is, we get everybody's best game. Iowa State is always tough at home and even though they aren't great, that will be a dangerous trip.

Missouri has the type of style that they can upset a lot of people (pressure and threes). If their shots are falling they can get away from you. If their shots aren't falling, they can get blown away.

Texas and A&M are both very good, and down there they seem especially tough. Texas surprised me by beating UCLA. They are playing much better as a team now that Durant is gone. The other guys don't spend as much time just standing and watching the show.

We also travel to Stillwater this year. They aren't very strong, either but they do a good job of protecting their home court.

All of that said, I still think we go 13-3 and win the conference outright. I think that the middle of the pack teams (K-State, Missouri, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St.) all did enough to make them very tough at home, meaning everyone is going to lose a couple of road games. The improvement of Baylor and Iowa State from last year, combined with Maric's presence at Nebraska and Knight at Tech means that the only really easy game will be Colorado (just not enough talent to compete right now, plus a new coach/system).

The competition level of the Big XII has shot up dramatically over the off-season. I could see 12-4 winning the league this year. The conference is definitely on an up-swing. It's going to be a grind.

Johnson is a ways out from even being able to sign though. Isn't he class of 2009?

I dont see A&M as a hughe threat since they have a new coach and all, no way Turg is going to beat KU in his 1st year. Texas is really the only worry I have, but I still say we are going 15-0 non conf, and 16-0 conf, for an undefeated season of 31-0 going into the big 12 tourny. Yea thats right..This will be the year, I feel it.

Justanotherfan you are right I just figured I should tell everyone because he is a big time point guard. And also Daniel otron who I suspect most of you know says that Ohio state and florida are on the top of his list. It would help if we could get him because orton and xavier play on the same AAU team and they could be a package deal.

Easy guys. We're still shooting around 60% from the line. You don't win in the tourney shooting 60% of your free throws. The NCAA keeps the games close in the tourney and you need to be clutch, and consistent, from the line or you're going down. period. Not to mention that we don't pass particularly well and we turn the ball over too much.

Plenty of room for improvement. And we need to use it.
