KU football depth chart released

The last three weeks of Kansas University football workouts finally were put on paper Sunday, when a depth chart was released to the media.

It's the first two-deep made public since after the spring game in April, and the changes are noticeable - even when compared to recent practices open to the public.

The quarterback position was won by Todd Reesing in a well documented competition earlier this month. But without as much public attention, several more races were either won or still being finished with the season opener against Central Michigan on Saturday.

Among them:

¢ Sophomore Jake Sharp is listed as the starting running back as expected. His backups are Brandon McAnderson (also the starting fullback) and true freshman Carmon Boyd-Anderson.

¢ Sophomore Angus Quigley is not listed.

¢ Cesar Rodriguez (tackle) and Chet Hartley (guard) are listed as the starters on the right side of the offensive line, though recent practices cast some doubt at both spots. Freshman Ian Wolfe is listed as Rodriguez's backup, while junior Rameses Arceo backs up Hartley.

KU releases depth chart

Today, head coach Mark Mangino release his final depth chart before the Kansas Football team opens the 2007 season, on the two deep, only a few surprises.

¢ The left guard spot is listed as still in competition between junior Adrian Mayes and sophomore Jason Hind, a junior-college transfer. Mayes was the projected starter when August practices began.

¢ The only other starting spot still being juggled between two players is strong safety, with Tang Bacheyie and Patrick Resby are seperated on the chart by an "or."

¢ The three starting wide receivers are Marcus Henry and Raymond Brown out wide and Dexton Fields in the slot. With multiple formations expected, including some four-receiver sets, listed backups Marcus Herford, Dezmon Briscoe, Raimond Pendelton and others expect to get plenty of work, too.

¢ Pendleton, besides backing up Fields in the slot, also is listed as KU's first-string punt-return specialist.

¢ Senior Derek Fine is the starting tight end, but backing him up for a change is freshman Bradley Dedeaux. Senior Marc Jones is not listed.

¢ Other players not on the most recent depth chart: Linebacker Arist Wright, receivers John Wilson and Tertavian Ingram, cornerback Gary Green, center John Marshall and defensive tackle Todd Haselhorst, who is returning from injury.

The new depth chart does reflect KU's youth, particularly on defense. Tackle James McClinton is the only senior projected to start on defense, and one of two on the entire two-deep. Backup defensive tackle Marcus Anderson is the other.

Most of the defensive first-teamers are juniors, with sophomores Caleb Blakesley (defensive tackle) and Darrell Stuckey (free safety) and true freshman Chris Harris (cornerback) the lone exceptions.

The splash of youth extends all the way down to those just out of high school. Six true freshmen currently are on the depth chart: Briscoe, Harris, Boyd-Anderson, backup center Jeremiah Hatch, backup middle linebacker Drew Dudley and backup kicker Stephen Hoge.

I can't wait for the season to begin. It sure seems like we have a lot of promising youth on the two deep to build around. I was reading some prior posts from this weekend and was moved to create an account to address a series of posts in the recent past that I found intriguing. Madmangine, you've posted several times in the past and you always seem to allude to some sort of conspiracy on the part of the Bush administration to keep Jayhawk football nation down. Are you being serious? Please elaborate if you are otherwise, I think it's pretty funny and keep doing what you're doing.

What happened to Angus Quigley?

That's a very good question--I found his absence odd as well.

Less than one week ... I am so excited!

Maybe Quigley's injury is worse than previously thought?

No Angus Quigley, huh...man...I guess I bought in a little too much to all of the preseason hype.

I am a bit surprised about all the youth. Given that we didn't lose a ton of players to graduation might be an indication that Mangino is recruiting better talent.

The other guys are probably better than Quigley. HawkFanEddie, this is good news, not bad. It means we have more depth, and if we have more depth, we are going to win more games.

Sevenyearhawk, I can hardly wait, too. 8-4 or better is my prediction.

Or maybe Quig is just the fourth or fifth guy (Bean) on the depth chart, and they didn't want to waste trees.

He'll get his.

I realize that having better talent/depth is a good thing. I was just commenting on everything I've heard or read this summer on Quigley lead me to believe that we was 100% back...bigger, faster and ready to dominate. After that serious of an injury I guess I should just be happy that his career isn't over. Sounds like we are going to have true lightening and thunder with Sharp and McAnderson. Boyd-Anderson must be pretty impressive if he is ready to play Big-XII football as an 18 year old kid. Overall talent has improved but I think Mangino is playing all of these true freshman because he knows how important this season is and how badly need needs more than 6 or 7 wins. Pressure is on him in year 6 with an "easy" schedule and redshirting talented freshmen is pointless if he isn't here to coach there sophomore, junior or senior seasons. I see 7-8 wins. I bet we drop one we should and win one we shouldn't. Only 5 more days!!!

I just hope that by the Texas A&M game that I'm still as pumped as I am now......really looking forward to that 20 hour road trip....and the week after driving 12 to Boulder, brutal.

Got my ticks in the mail for North End Zone at KSU Saturday. If you haven't sat there for a game, I highly recommend it. It's a lot of fun having the team run out right by you, and giving KSU all the hell you can possibly spit out of your mouth in a 1 minute period. That is the key game on this schedule in my opinion. Assuming 4 and 0 going in, that is the game that will set the tone. And it is definitely winnable. From there, it's a relatively easy run to 7 and 0, and if they get there, anything can happen. 8 and 0 or 7 and 1 when NU comes to town, the place will be rocking like 2005, and 'hawks will be in contention for the North.

This is the year people.....jump on that ole bandwagon....it's gonna be a fun ride.

I'm going to be at KSU, CU, and OSU but will miss the A & M game. Agree, KSU is a huge game, especially if we don't stumble on the non-league opponents. Barring injuries, look out for the Hawks this year. Defensive ends, we need you to have a big year. Come on Saturday, get here soon.

leikness-Isnt that funny. By far, our two farthest games this year are in Boulder and College Station and they are back to back weeks. Should be a lot of fun though. Im really looking forward to both games.

After re-watching all the games we lost in the 4th qaurter (esp. Nebraska).. if you look at how good we were in that game at times... and how we played against KSU, CU(2nd half), and ISU.. KU will be in every game this year and could very well be 10-2 or 11-1 barring consistency.

Brothers

Your positivism inspires me. God I'm ready to see the hawks charge the field. Rockchalk, you had to reference the NU game from last year. How utterly painful. We will avenge that loss in Lawrence this year, and I will be there to charge the field.

Lemonhead. Perhaps I am externalizing blame. Perhaps at times, I prefer to see myself, a staunch Kansas football fan, as a lone soldier lost and at war with an enemy who has 10 times as many guns as I. That enemy (and I've been saying this for years) is, on the surface, the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns are the Jayhawks biggest threat to Big 12 dominance and I believe that the persecution, if you will, starts at the desk of our Commander in Chief (Chief Longhorn). Perhaps I am rationalizing. I am willing to admit my mistakes. But in my world, there is solid evidence, evidence that Mangino hinted at in his tirade against the Big 12 after the Texas loss, that the system is corrupt. Put together the pieces anyway you wish. For myself, I will not rest until we, as the Jayhawk Football (uspets me that I have to specify which nation...as if there was another) are fully vindicated.

I do want to point out that the game at NU last year was not a loss. NU blatantly fumbled through the end zone and KU in all honesty won that game. dollar signs, that's right....dollar signs.

I proudly pass the torch to you my fellow Jayhawk football fanatic!!!!!

I will ONLY be able to go on the road to the A&M this year, but it will complete my tour of Big XII stadia.

I started grad school this year at Emporia St and have class the weekends of the K-State, Okie St and FIU games.

In Boulder, be sure to go to their "fieldhouse" that is attached to the stadium to hear the CU band come in, that was a great experience.

In Manhattan, be sure to give 'em hell for all of us!

In Stillwater, don't forget to drop by Eskimo Joes ... the Pokes are a good bunch, tell them we still wished Eddie Sutton would have come and played for Coach Allen.

***

I am truly excited to see all of you getting excited about Jayhawk football, I'm hoping for a great season, but I won't make any predictions ...

***

I was there when Charles Gordon picked off Nebraska, twice ... I was there when we ended the K-State streak and later the Nebraska streak. I watched in agony as we gave up the lead to Baylor, and when KU thumped Missouri and Brad Smith ... I rode a greyhound bus to lubbock freaking texas to see KU play Texas Tech!!!

On the way back, I had to get off the bus in Dallas, rented a car, drove back, took a detour through the Ozarks and didn't get home until four am monday morning!!!

i have a piece of the goalpost from the 40-15 Husker game that once belonged to a dear friend of mine. When he passed away, it was given to me ... later when our son was born, we named him "Damon" in his honor. He was a former manager for the KU basketball team ...

***

I am so full of pride and excitement about Kansas Jayhawk Football that I could just explode ...

beak 'em, hawks!!!

Wow, sevenyear, I am extremely jealous. I was at that game; it was the most excited I've ever been at a KU football game. I got very emotional at the end, remembering all those 56-0 pastings over the years (not to mention some heartbreakers thrown in as well). What a special day that was, and I would love to have such a great souvenir.

I do have you beat on the Greyhound bus ride, though. A few years ago I was planning on going to the ISU game at Ames. But stupid me, I had forgotten to renew my California driver's license so I couldn't rent a car. On a lark, I thought what the hell, I'll see if I can go there with the KU band. Sure enough, they had a space for me. And even though it was a horrible game during the dregs of the TA years, I still had a great time with the band. It was like a trip backwards about 20 years.

madmangine,

I don't know about the KU fan HOF, but I am proud of that moment as a demonstration of my love for KU football ... when KU plays in a BCS game, I'll be there, and I can recall being there through the darkest hours!

actorman,
I am extremely proud to have that piece of goalpost, I plan on have it mounted someday soon. I just wished that I hadn't had to lose my friend to get it ...

A band bus trip, I was in the band many, many years ago, I might trade my Lubbock trip for yours to Ames ... maybe!

I am glad that I am not alone in my passion for Jayhawk football, I just watched the intro video on YouTube when I got to work this morning, I have the Riddell Pocket Pro helmets for KU and Central Michigan sitting on my desk ...

Let's roll, Hawks!!!!!!
