Mangino: Meier on mend

By Ryan Wood     Sep 21, 2006

Kansas University quarterback Kerry Meier continues to bounce back from an arm injury suffered late in Friday’s game at Toledo, according to KU coach Mark Mangino.

“He has been limited,” Mangino said. “We’ll just keep going day to day.”

Meier suffered bruising in his throwing arm that affected his range of motion, though no other details were disclosed. Mangino wouldn’t speculate on when Meier could be back to full health, though he said earlier in the week that he expected Meier to play Saturday against South Florida.

In the meantime, Mangino said backup quarterback Adam Barmann had seen increased work in practice.

“I think he has just matured,” Mangino said of Barmann, a senior. “He has been through the battles, and he understands. He is a guy that really has a good feel for what’s taking place.”

¢ Stuckey, Holt recovering: Mangino said Darrell Stuckey and James Holt – victims of preseason injuries – were getting closer to returning, and they were seen leaving the practice field in pads Wednesday.

Mangino did confirm that neither would play this week.

“They are doing really well, moving around,” Mangino said. “Hopefully it won’t be too far off. Their progress has been very good.”

¢ Another night game: With the kickoffs for South Florida and Nebraska games both set for 6 p.m., Kansas will open the season with at least five straight night games.

While Mangino considers himself a traditionalist, he didn’t seem to feel strongly about when his team plays.

“The good thing is, we’re used to playing night games,” Mangino said. “That’s the upside of it. But wherever they tell us to go and what time to be there, we’ll show up.”
