KU jumps in polls, Wright named Big 12 POW

Following its 82-80 overtime win over previously-top-ranked Florida Saturday night, KU jumped Monday to No. 5 in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls.

The leap ahead in the polls comes a week after KU was dropped to 10th in the AP poll and 12th in the ESPN/USA Today poll following its home loss to Oral Roberts on Nov. 15.

In the AP poll, UCLA (4-0) grabbed the top spot, followed by Pittsburgh (6-0), Ohio State (6-0), Florida (6-1) and KU (5-1). The top five was a little different in the ESPN/USA Today poll, with Ohio State grabbing the top spot two days before they will take on North Carolina (seventh in the AP, sixth in ESPN/USA Today) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Following the Buckeyes in that poll, in order, are UCLA, Pitt, Florida and Kansas.

Florida stayed ahead of KU largely because of their dominance in non-conference games leading up to Saturday's loss. In their 6-0 start, the Gators won by an average of 42.2 points per contest.

On the heels of that, sophomore forward Julian Wright, who registered 21 points and 10 rebounds in the win, was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

Wright is the second active Jayhawk to earn the honors, with fellow sophomore Mario Chalmers having done so Feb. 13 last season. Wright was named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the WEek as a freshman on Feb. 27.

Come on. How could Darrell Arthur get passed up for Big XII player of the week in favor of Stefhom Hannah. I mean come on, they played Stephen F. Austin U.
For a freshman to have the numbers he did against Florida and their hugely talented and experienced big men (19 points, 9 rebounds, ablock, a steal and zero turnovers) is great. And he did it in 16 minutes!!!!! And he was C-L-U-T-C-H at the end of the game....

There are only so many POW awards to go around. If they gave it to all the guys that really deserved it, no other team in the Big XII besides KU would ever get it. :)

Keep on Rockin' and Chalkin!

it kind of sucks to think that if we'd have beaten oral roberts, we could be number one. i guess that's what young talented teams do, they lay an egg at home, and beat the number one team in the country on the road. this is going to be gut-wrenching, and my prediction, a whole lot of fun.

Anybody know why Florida is ranked higher than us?

Midwest013, did you not read the article???

"Florida stayed ahead of KU largely because of their dominance in non-conference games leading up to Saturday's loss. In their 6-0 start, the Gators won by an average of 42.2 points per contest."

It says that right there in the article. That is why!!! Personally, I don't mind that we aren't number one...yet!

We don't deserve number 1 right now, but then again nobody does, just 6 or 7 games in the season. They shouldn't even have ranking till atleast early to mid december...that way ppl have a chance to play awhile, and you can actually see who turns out as expected. As you can see, there have been a ton of upsets so far, and for that they should leave the polls till later. But keep on Hawkin!!111111

I for one am glad that we're not #1. I always think we play terrible as a #1 since all the pressure is on us and everybody is gunning for ya at #1. Its better if we stay around 4 or 5.

I agree we shouldn't be #1, but even so, the fact that Florida bullied some nobodies doesn't trump the fact that the 'Hawks took it to them in Vegas. If the reason we jumped so far is that win, they should at least put us in front of Florida. But it really doesn't matter this early.
