Shady Delay

Arthur's pick likely to be either LSU or Baylor, source says

The prolonged recruitment of talented high school basketball prospect Darrell "Slim Shady" Arthur will end today.

Unless it doesn't.

Barring an unforeseen last-minute kick, Kansas University isn't likely to be Arthur's choice, based on a scenario laid out by a source close to the situation who believed as of Monday night that LSU and Baylor University were the primary schools between which Arthur was waffling.

Arthur's AAU coach, Jazzy Hartwell, a Baton Rouge native, had arranged a news conference that was to take place Monday in the YMCA building in Arthur's neighborhood. However, it was postponed until noon today, according to Hartwell.

Hartwell told the Dallas Morning News: "I'm worried about him. He's trying not to hurt anybody's feelings."

A source said Monday morning Arthur was prepared to announce for one school, either LSU or Baylor, and was convinced by somebody, perhaps doing the bidding of the other of those two schools, not to rush into a decision.

Throughout the recruitment, sources indicated, Arthur's mother had favored the KU coaching staff, and his grandmother the location of Baylor, which is in Waco, roughly 90 minutes from Dallas. lists the drive from Dallas to Baton Rouge as a six-hour, 42-minute trip, or 65 minutes shorter than the trip from Dallas to Lawrence.

James Mays, Arthur's coach at South Oak Cliff High in Dallas, has sent players to schools in Texas, including forward Kevin Rogers, who averaged 6.1 points per game in his freshman season at Baylor. Those in the LSU camp, a source said, believed Mays might favor in-state schools.

Mays, however, told the Baton Rouge Advocate that wasn't the case.

"It doesn't matter to me," Mays said. "I want Darrell to go wherever he's going to be happiest. It's not a big thing to me at all."

The recruitment of Arthur, who led his high school to consecutive state titles, has taken many sharp turns.

Until Mike Davis announced way ahead of time his resignation from Indiana, the Hoosiers were considered the favorites. KU then assumed that role.

Then, at the McDonald's All-America game, Arthur told the Journal-World that KU and Texas were his co-leaders. Shortly after that, he told the Dallas Morning News that newcomers Arizona and Oklahoma, as well Baylor, which he always listed, also were under consideration. SMU also was in play for a time.

One month later, in late April, Arthur narrowed his list to LSU, KU and Baylor, where it has remained since.

LSU became involved late. After Tyrus Thomas helped to lead the Tigers to the Final Four and decided to enter the NBA Draft, LSU began pursuing Arthur as his replacement. The next time LSU head coach John Brady sees Arthur play in person will be the first.

Arthur averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots as a senior, and in the final three games of his high school career, he averaged 28 points and 14 rebounds.

Arthur and close friend Scottie Reynolds, a point guard who was released from his commitment to Oklahoma after Kelvin Sampson bolted for Indiana, visited LSU together. At that point, many other schools in pursuit of the players feared they would commit during their visit. They didn't, and it's believed Reynolds has soured on LSU.

If Arthur goes through with the news conference to announce his decision today, he could call to mind a highly recruited basketball star from another generation.

Ralph Sampson, while announcing his college decision into a microphone, said: "I'm going to Virginia ... I think."

I guess everybody is a source anymore. How many different sources do people have anymore???

A very brief scour of the Baylor and LSU sports sites, and I can't find a word about Arthur. What does this tell us (1) they can't cover sports to save their lives, (2) they don't care that much about him (doubt it) - which means KU obviously cares and should be a front runner, and/or (3) recent press and comments from the KU faithful haven't been too positive, which would deter me if I were him. But if I were KU, I would deter from him as well.

Why do you insult the memory of "Phog" when you never have a single positive thing to say about KU??????????

jayloco 12 years, 1 month ago

Phog-Here's some truth for you- YOU ARE A SCRUB. You come on here and try to give Hawk fans a dose of "reality", but where are you when there is something positive to say. Did you post anything about KU being, in fact, BIG XII Champs this year? Did you post anything about the fact that they had a very good season despite the early exit? No, you didn't do any of that. So if you are really a promotor of "truth" than you need to post good facts about KU as well as bad. I don't think you are a believer in telling the truth. You are what we call in today's lingo, a HATER.

I'm here to spill the beans. Phog is actually a Mizzou alum. He likes to ruffle feathers. Don't pay attention to him.

Is it just me or does the picture on the LJWorld website make Arthur look like a thug or what? I doubt he will choose KU, but if he chooses Baylor, get ready for a whooping because KU will mop the floor with him down there.

what does brown skin have anything to do with basketball besides the fact most people that make it in the sport happen to have brown skin. come on you can say black. it crazy how people say the things they say hiding behind thier computer under a faulse name. But I agree with delo that acourse kansas shows favoritism with their athletes and thier but on a platform for the world to see basiclly they hype them up cuz it's good for KU and the player. i hope he makes the right choice weather it's KU or not. P.S I never knew fog was a tiger hahaha

no, it's the USA warm-up that makes him look like a thug....

Poor kid. Bottom line, LSU and Baylor have much easier minutes to be earned, and he's letting the fact that there is so competition up and down the KU depth chart deter him when it should be motivation. TV exposure, not to mention greater improvement and, hello, WINNING should be Of course, they're going to be earned in relative obscurity (you know LSU's not making out of the first weekend of the tournament next year, and Baylor's, well, Baylor). Oh well. I guess we'll just have to make due with the five starters we have returning.

milehighhawk 12 years, 1 month ago

This kid seems like an NCAA Investigation waiting to happen. We don't need another JR Giddens. He won't come to KU because of playing time, and we'll be fine without him. We shouldn't disrupt incredible chemistry for someone that is lukewarm about the program.

frompekka2sasha 12 years, 1 month ago

KU will survive without this kid but it would have been a nice bonus to what we already have coming back. He deserves our "time" when posting.

I personally think this guy is a very insecure person who roots for one of the crappy teams that are considered rivals of KU. Let the boy drown in the lack of his own team's performance and that should be enough.

Anyone remember Lester Earl?? He should have stayed at LSU and I think that Darrell Arthur should probably just go ahead and go to LSU. The Jayhawks will be better off without this "highly recruited" but uncertain player; like we would have been with Earl!

I just got on the baylor & lsu site to see what they had to say about Arthur, NOTHING. I put Darrell Aurthur into both of there searches and on the lsu site, a track and relay box score came up, and on the baylor site some football stories. Conclusion, they don't care that much. Rock Chalk Jayhawk

This kid is a headache. I'm only sorry the KU staff didn't withdraw any offer of a scholarship sooner. All of this attention he is drawing to himself concerns me with regard to his affect on the current team's chemistry. Besides; if he's afraid of competing and earning minutes with a team with more depth then I would be concerned about his work ethic, it's pretty obvious he is.
