North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams disclosed at his annual summertime news conference that he is having back and leg pain caused by sciatica.
The former Kansas University coach told Carolina media members he may need back surgery.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports Williams has had 10 appointments with a chiropractor, eight with an acupuncturist and has taken three epidural shots.
"And I can't break 80," Williams said of his golf game. "I've got a bulging disk that is pinching the sciatic nerve. It's very painful at times. Down the road there's probably going to have to be some surgery but I think with the medical people we have here I can push that way down the road.
"My golf game's worse - I think I'll go down in history as having the best reputation and the worst game of any golfer ever."

Nobody cares about Benedict Roy around here anymore. Please confine your reporting to KU interests and not traitorous narcissists who could care less about the University of Kansas.

I agree completely with PsychHawk. Roy Williams is no longer our coach. I do not care about his bad back or his golf game. If you remember, Williams pretty stole Tyler Hansboro from KU. No one likes to hear about X-girlfriends and I do not want hear about Benedict Williams.

Come on you clowns. Roy Williams is still the greatest coach in KU history outside of Naismith/Allen. He still gave us 15 wonderful years of KU Hoops. His office is decked out half KU and half UNC.
Check out the Chris Meyers Interview with Coach Williams from after the end of this past season. Maybe if you know a little more to the story you'll relenquish your pettiness. Walk a mile in the man's shoes and maybe you'll understand. Or maybe I'm typing to a collective brick wall. Get over it.

If anyone is a traitor it's Dean Smith, who turned his back on his own alma mater. Were it not for Dean, I think Roy would still be here. That being said, I can't blame him for leaving. If I was the head coach at Carolina and KU came calling, my bags would be packed before I hung up the phone. There would be no tearful departure and I'd have zero regrets about leaving.
In the long run I think we're better off with CS. He's younger, he's a better recruiter, and I think he will ultimately prove to be a better coach. Will he ever bolt for OSU? He's stated that KU was the best coaching job in college and he left a pretty good program to come here. Sean Sutton was the heir to the throne in Stillwater but I can't help think that if Self wanted the job he owned the right of first refusal. It must be difficult for him to hear all the we hate Roy talk. Every time someone professes their contempt for CW, what they're really saying is we wish he was the coach instead of you. The opposite of love is indifference, not hatred.
Roy gave us 15 good years but he never delivered the hardware. As soon as CS wins a national title I think we'll not hear about Roy Williams again.

Well I certainly wouldn't define myself as a Roy Williams fan, but I do have to admit, Roy did a couple of good things when he left. He hung Al Bohl out to dry, and opened the door to for us to hire a coach that can recruit like no other.
I think you've got it right seattlehawk_78. Everyone's anger is the sincerest form of flattery. At first I was disappointed and angry that coach Williams decided to leave, now I'm indifferent. He only looked so irreplaceable because we hadn't seen anybody else do his job for a while. Now that I've seen the kind of talent that Coach Self is capable of picking up, It doesn't bother me at all that Roy left. Hopefully, this can be the year that all of the new talent can come to fruition.
He also did us quite a public service by having the stones to resign in protest of Bohl. Roy didn't want to be at the kind of program that was always in trouble with the NCAA. With Bohl at the helm, all the respect he had worked so hard to earn was in danger of being lost. Bohl has been gone for several years now and we are still paying for his incompetence. Imagine how bad our "lack of institutional control" charge would be if we were still having the same problems and no one had tried to clean them up.

If our time with Benedict Roy taught us nothing else, it is that one can never assume that anything he says is sincere. I can't accept any statement he makes about his fondness for KU because it is made with a forked tongue and with an eye to keeping what few people in the Midwest who still respect him on his side. In reality, Roy has only ever cared about Roy and how Roy looks. KU was merely a tool that he used and discarded like a crumpled napkin.

I tired of hearing people say Roy Williams saved KU basketball or that he is the greatest coach KU ever had. He is neither in regards to KU. I concede he was good coach and that he brought good players to KU and that went to several final fours. But, he never won a championship. Further, it is simply ridiculous with the talent he had with Paul Piece and Raef Lafrentz and what little he did with those teams.
But, the fact remains that KU was a great school before Roy Williams. Larry Brown the coach Williams replaced went to two final fours and won a championship in five years. Phog Allen did way more then Roy Williams for KU. Heck, even Ted Owens managed to go to final fours and not win championshps. So it is short sighted to say that Roy Williams is the greatest coach KU ever had.
The absolute best story I ever heard on this issue (Williams being a triator) was something I saw in the Topeka Capital Journal a few years ago which stated that Roy Williams was the second most hated sports figure in Kansas behind AL Davis of the Oakland Raiders. Frankly, I like Al Davis better than Williams and I am a Chief fan. Davis is at least a truly devoted to the Raiders.
I agree with someone else's comment and hope that Coach Self hurries up and win a championship so we can all forget about Benedict Williams.

I have always been a huge KU fan, and it sucked when Roy left. But what I always remind people is, Roy could have never landed the recruits that Self has. The chicago area is a hotspot these days and Self almost has a lock on it. Some people will try and argue that Roy brought in some pretty good players in Pollard, Jacque, and Pierce. But you know, those cali guys were all landed by Neil Doughrty who now coaches at TCU. Be happy for Coach williams, but be happier that we landed a younger, better recruiting replacement. And he's got great hair.

I didn't even bother going through the bajillion comments on here. I just thank Coach Williams for the time he put in here. KU had a great tradition before Roy ever showed up here, and even without winning a championship, he built upon that legacy. I don't necessarily care about the differences in their recruiting philosophies or coaching abilities. The fact is, we've been blessed to have coaches of great character who we can really root for. More than anything, Roy taught character. You didn't see players screwing up or making an idiot of themselves near as much when he was here. He really elevated the KU program to the level of class it is today. I don't care if Self lands a Fab Five recruiting class every single year. If they act in the same manner as the original 'Fab Five'... that's not worth rooting for, in my opinion. I would rather have players that represent the school with class... not rubbing their butts on the mid-court logo. No one can ever knock Roy for that. He made it known what wearing a KU jersey meant and how a jayhawk should represent himself, his team, and his school. He should always be respected for that.

Agreed. I never hated Roy for leaving but like most, I was disappointed. I hope some day he returns to AFH to a standing ovation. I know if I were in attendance I would be on my feet. Sadly, I don't see that happening any time soon. I don't think Roy will ever be completely forgiven until CS wins it all. I hope that will happen soon.

You all should just shut up about roy and whoever. Most people on here aren't even true fans and sit and bitch when someone cant win a big game. Roy or Self, neither of which have won a championship. I thank god everyday that roy left us, because we now have someone here who we dont have to worry about leaving for another school! It would have to take huge nuts for self to leave KU for OSU, and i dont think that anyone has those nuts!

Roy not only slapped all jayhawk nation in the face when he left, he also slapped Brad D. In the face, supposedly his mentor.
Sure brad had a few personnel issues, but he built the team roy finally won it all with. Roy spent more years in KS total than he did in NC as a coach and a student. Self is a much better recruiter, and he understands the game today. Roy will see the light after it is too late. He offended all of his former players, and all of his fans. Basketball is always "what have you done for me lately" , and roys latest act was a dagger in the back. F-Roy!!!!!

Indeed, texasjim. And how about that Brad D? He really got screwed over by Roy and UNC! Way to make a sound argument steve!
Seriously, most of us were upset when Roy decided to go to UNC, whether angry or disappointed or just sad to see a great coach leave a great school. It's been three years and we've got a great coach now, who has a chance to put a Smith/K/Wooden (okay, without the 10 straight) level legacy on this beloved program. I'm not saying he will, but here's to hoping!
So get over your hatred of Roy and be greatful for the wonderful years he gave us. I daresay no one on this board had anything but love for Roy 6 years ago. Besides, we've got the Dookies, Yankees and the "Boom goes the dynamite" guy as worthy targets of our vitriole, and life's better when filled with joy rather than anger.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

I'm usually not a fan of any coach, its the team that I love. I've been a Ku fan my whole life, and I respect that roy left. but like i said before, Self stated this is the best job in college basketball, and im sure he meant it. He played against Kansas when he was at oklahoma st., and im sure he knew, as does everyone, what a prestigeous program this is. When you think college basketball, you think KU, Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky! It obvious that roy didn't want to be here, and he proved it by leaving. Self came in to great situation, and will leave it better!

Everybody is so hypocritical for hating Roy. You loved him right before he left and then all of the sudden you hate him? His leaving sucked really bad, I know. It was like being dumped by your boyfriend who really seemed to care! It seemed like the world was over, and even now, I know the "good old days" are gone. I'll just have to put in my 96-97 team video and pretend. Just because he didn't win us a championship doesn't mean he was a bad coach. I loved him back then and I still do today. I was so glad to see him win it all last year. Coach Self is okay, but he isn't the gentleman that Roy was. I miss him :( And I DO want to read stories about him in the paper! So thank you LJW!
