Czyz wins state honor

? Former Kansas University baseball player Don Czyz was one of three individuals with KU ties honored at the 34th annual Kansas City Sports Commission Awards Banquet Tuesday night at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center.

A native of Overland Park, Czyz earned the Kansas Male College Athlete of the Year award.

KU women’s basketball signee Danielle McCray of Olathe East was named winner of the Kansas High School Athlete of the Year Award.

Former KU track great Billy Mills was tapped winner of the CASEY Award (Citation for Amateur Sports Excellence). Mills won the gold medal in the 10,000 at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Lawrence High’s Scott Penny was a finalist for boys high school athlete of the year after winning two golds at the Class 6A state track and field championships and excelling at linebacker for the football team.
