KU hoops adds three opponents

Add Dartmouth, Detroit Mercy and Rhode Island to the list of teams Kansas University will play in men's basketball this season in Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks will play Dartmouth University of the Ivy League on Nov. 28. The Big Green return four starters from a team that went 6-21 overall, 4-10 in conference play. Their leading returning starter is 6-foot-2 senior Leon Pattman, who averaged 10.9 points per game last season.

Dartmouth's third-year coach, Terry Dunn, is the twin brother of Jerry Dunn, former head coach at Penn State who is now an assistant at West Virginia.

KU will meet University of Detroit Mercy of the Horizon League on Dec. 28. The Titans return two starters from a team that went 16-16 overall and 8-8 in conference play. Their leading returning starter is 6-0 senior Brandon Cotton, who averaged 17.5 points a game last season. He hit 45 of 120 threes, good for 37.5 percent. Jon Goode, a 5-10 junior, averaged 10.9 ppg, hitting 59 of 142 threes for 41.5 percent. Detroit's coach is Perry Watson, in his 14th year at the Michigan school.

KU will face Rhode Island of the Atlantic 10 on Dec. 30. The Rams return three starters from a team that went 14-14 overall and 8-8 in conference play. Their leading returning starter is Will Daniels, a 6-8 junior who averaged 11 points a game. Rhode Island is led by sixth-year coach Jim Baron.

Several other games on the nonconference slate have already been revealed, including four marquee games. KU will meet Southern California (Dec. 4) and Boston College (Dec. 23) in Allen Fieldhouse and travel to DePaul and South Carolina, also in December. KU will meet Toledo on Dec. 9 in Kemper Arena.

The Jayhawks' regular-season opener will be Nov. 11 vs. Northern Arizona in Allen Fieldhouse. The exhibition opener will be against Washburn on Nov. 2 with an exhibition with Emporia State set for Nov. 7.

The Jayhawks also will compete in the Las Vegas Invitational. The tourney includes home games Towson University (Nov. 19) and Tennessee State (Nov. 21) and games in the Las Vegas Convention Center against Ball State (Nov. 24) and Florida (Nov. 25).

KU is still looking to fill one additional home date before the nonconference schedule will be made public.

KU's schedule for the 2007-08 season is already taking shape. The Jayhawks will make trips to Georgia Tech, USC and Boston College that season, with DePaul coming to Lawrence.

¢ New numbers: Jersey numbers have been assigned to KU's four incoming players.

Darrell Arthur, 6-9 from Dallas, will wear No. 00; Sherron Collins, 5-11 from Chicago, will wear No. 4; Brady Morningstar, 6-3 out of Free State High and most recently New Hampton (N.H.) Prep, will wear No. 12. Brennan Bechard, 6-0 out of Lawrence High and most recently Barton County CC, will wear No. 11.

Greg Ostertag was the last Jayhawk to wear No. 00 from 1992-95; Drew Gooden wore the single-digit 0 from 2000 to '02. Nick Collison last wore No. 4 from 2000 to '03. Billy Thomas last wore 12 from 1995 to '98. Aaron Miles last wore No. 11 from 2002 to '05.r

No, not blind, just focused on the college game. Hence the "KU" part of "KUSports.com." :-) However, when the subject comes up we all do tend to chat about the NBA, MLB, whatever is germaine to the articla at the time.

Personally, not the biggest fan of the NBA. I do follow the NBA some, just not with the same zeal with which I follow college ball. Mainly I try to keep an eye on the KU grads in the NBA and elsewhere (e.g., Europe, NBADL, etc...)

The only people that truly care about the NBA have a team in their city or immediate vicinity. We really have to reason to follow the NBA because we don't have anybody specific to root for.

It's too bad that in the midst of Big 12 country, there is no NBA team in Kansas City. Guess the new Sprint Center still is not big enough to lure a pro team.

Amen to TDub. Why on earth do we care? We gonna talk about the Kansas City Kings? We COULD talk about KU Alumni in the NBA. But really, there have been no suprises. Everyone pretty much knew Kirk and PP would be great... Collison hasn't fully come into his own yet because of shoulder problems, but he will... and Wayne is getting snubbed because he's a rookie on a deep team. Drew is doing well, and Pollard and Ostertag had about the exact roles that could be expected. I was thrilled to see Billy Thomas crack the Nets roster a year or two ago, because I always thought he was really underrated. The only one I expected a little more from in his NBA career was Vaughn. THERE... you happy KUCHamp? ^^ The rest of the NBA can go fly a kite. I could care less.

I wouldn't say we're blind to the NBA but why would anyone be concerned about teams from other cities when we have a premier college team in our backyard. My guess is that most KU fans interest in the NBA is limited to those teams with KU players on their rosters. I'm rooting for Miami simply because Simien is on the roster but I don't have enough interest to actually watch the game.

But since you brought it up KUChamps07, here's some NBA talk. When the season ended there were 10 KU players on NBA rosters. That surely must be a record for KU and there can't be many schools with more players represented. I was particularly pleased to see Billy Thomas crack the Wizards roster. This guy has more than paid his dues. There must be about 10 others playing in the CBA or Europe. Anyone know the whereabouts of active Jayhawks not in the NBA?

I was fortunate enough to see the great Keith Langford play in Oklahoma. He scored 27 points in his USBL debut with the Kansas Cagerz, he was typically beating his opponents one-on-one with his quick first step. It was great to see him play again. Unfortunately the Cagerz lost to the Oklahoma Storm.

Why did the heat daft wayne so high he never plays not in blow outs not ever but those were roy's boy's so now bill's crew can change that it's time to look ahead if people will stop talking about the so called bu thing we would take some pressure off these guys. People will see more and more jayhawks in the NBA in any other minor league.
