Fans rile Hawkins

Inspired senior hits for 11 points

— Jeff Hawkins, who hit five threes against Nebraska earlier this season at Allen Fieldhouse, swished three more in Wednesday's 69-48 victory over the Cornhuskers.

In Lawrence, Hawkins simply had the hot hand.

In Lincoln, he was steamed after hearing some insults during the Jayhawks' pregame warmups.

"To be honest, their fans were making me mad," Hawkins said. "When I came out, one of 'em said, 'Hawkins, you will not get, 'curse word' today.'

"I just took that negativity and turned it into a positive. I don't like being told what I can't do," Hawkins added after scoring 11 points off 3-of-6 three-point shooting.

Hawkins was so incensed by the fans he mentioned it to his teammates.

"I told some players I was going to shoot the ball good today because of their fans," Hawkins said. "I'd like to thank their fans for that one, for motivation."

Hawkins finished with 11 points Wednesday; he had 17 versus NU in Lawrence.

"Our team is solid right now," Hawkins said. "Guys are all figuring out roles and playing really well."
