Packers release former Jayhawk Bookman

By J-W Staff Reports     Aug 17, 2006

Leo Bookman, a former Kansas University track standout, was released Monday by the Green Bay Packers.

Bookman, a three-time NCAA champion in the 200-meter dash, was trying to make the NFL team as a free-agent wide receiver.

The 6-foot-2, 212-pound Bookman hadn’t played football since quitting the KU team in 2002, saying he wanted to concentrate on track. He had been used sparingly as a football player for the Jayhawks.

Bookman, a native of Dickinson, Texas, did not play in the Packers’ first exhibition game last weekend because of an ankle injury. He returned to practice Monday and was cut Tuesday.

In November of 2005, Bookman accepted a public warning from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for a violation at the Jamaica International Invitational.

USADA said he tested positive in May for salbutamol, a prohibited substance. He forfeited his second-place finish in the 200 meters at the Jamaica meet.
