Kansas Relays meet director Tim Weaver announced the addition of Olympic champion Allen Johnson to the list of competing athletes for GOLDZONE II, the highlight events of the 79th Kansas Relays.
"Sometimes life just seems to go your way," said Weaver. "I should probably go buy a lottery ticket tonight. First we get an amazing weather forecast for Saturday, and now we have Allen Johnson as part of the main event of GOLDZONE II.
"This man is a legend in the sport. He has won 11 U.S. titles, an Olympic gold medal, eight World Championship titles and an NCAA crown. Allen is a GOLDZONE all by himself. With the addition of yet another superstar, fans may want to bring an extra roll of film to Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon."
Johnson will take the place of Olympian Pierre Brown and compete for the HSI 400-meter relay team as part of the main event of GOLDZONE II. Johnson will team with Olympic champion Maurice Greene, world champion Leonard Scott and World University Games champion Kaaron Conwright. They will face Sprint Capitol USA, featuring Olympic champions Justin Gatlin and Shawn Crawford, junior college champion Rodney Martin and Olympian Dwight Thomas.
The women's main event will match up Olympic silver medalist Allyson Felix against world champion Muna Lee, a graduate of Kansas City's Central High School.
