Cameron, Okla. — Cameron University has established an endowed lectureship to honor former CU and Kansas University men's basketball coach Ted Owens.

Owens began his coaching career at Cameron State Agricultural College in 1956. He was the first coach to lead an undefeated, No. 1-ranked basketball team to the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

"I spent four of the best years of my life at Cameron," Owens said.

Owens was head coach at Kansas for 19 years, a tenure exceeded only by the legendary Phog Allen. While at KU, Owens' teams won 15 Big Eight Conference titles and made two NCAA Final Four appearances.

Owens, 76, lives in Tulsa.
