K.C. prep picks Kansas

Kansas University’s football team picked up a nonbinding oral commitment Sunday from Kansas City (Kan.) Washington High defensive end Jamal Greene.

“Kansas offered me, and I gave them a verbal commitment today,” Greene told rivals.com. “I was real excited when they offered me. I have seen what is going on up there, and I wanted to be a part of it.”

Greene, a 6-foot-4, 255 pounder, said he has been watching Kansas closely and had heard a lot about the program from teammate Darrell Stuckey, who signed with KU last year.

“I like what coach (Mark) Mangino has done since he got there,” Greene said. “He’s doing a good job, and he is doing by getting the good local players. I stayed in contact with (assistant coach) Dave Doeren, who recruited me. He kept me focused on KU and got me up to the spring game and the camp.”

Greene said he had been recruited by Iowa State, Illinois, Nebraska and Tulsa and was getting mail from Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Wyoming.

Greene, a first-team all-league pick, said he followed advice by Stuckey.

“One thing I learned from him is he said to always to play hard,” Greene said. “He told me you never know who is watching. It could be a college recruiter. So he told me you have to give your best.”
