SOUTH BEND, IND. Kansas University's men's bowling club, the defending national champion, rallied from 80 pins down on the final day Sunday to win the Blue and Gold Classic.
"We ran away with it," KU coach Mike Fine said. "We were awfully good the second day of the tournament."
KU's Rhino Page won the all-events with a 220 average, and teammate Pat Eighmy was second with a 216. Other KU bowlers were Zach Taylor (198), Chris Dilley (192) and Dan Ahl (188).
KU won the team title with 9,132 pins. There were 33 men's teams in the Tier One tournament, in which nine of the nation's top 10 teams competed.
KU's women's team placed sixth of 15 teams. Wichita State won with 8,531 pins.
Kelly Zapf led the Jayhawks with 182 average and eighth-place finish. Other KU results: Sara Roenfeldt (169), Natalie Bennett (169), Leanne Downey (161) and Nicole Johannes (161).
KU will travel Feb. 5-6 to the Husker Maverick Classic in Omaha, Neb.
