X-Factor Week 9: Colorado 35, Kansas 21

Just like the the real-life Kansas University football team against Northwestern and Texas Tech, our virtual Jayhawks led Colorado at halftime in this week’s X-Factor simulation.

And just like those real-life games, the lead slipped away in the second half of a game that turned into a loss. This time, the virtual Buffaloes defeated the Jayhawks, 35-14.

Kansas scored on its opening drive with Jason Swanson connecting with Derek Fine on a one-yard touchdown pass.

The only drive by either team that crossed midfield until late in the second quarter was a three-play possession by the Jayhawks that ended with an interception of Swanson by defensive end Alex Ligon, who had dropped back in coverage on a zone blitz.

Swanson led KU on another scoring drive with just under three minutes left in the first half, putting the Jayhawks up 14-0. Austine Nwabuisi finished the drive with a six-yard run off a shotgun option pitch by John Randle.

Colorado finally got on the board midway through the third quarter with a 24-yard pass from Joel Klatt to Tyler Littlehales. Two possessions and three minutes later, the Buffaloes tied the game on a 13-yard run by Lawrence Vickers down the right sideline.

KU went back on top, 21-14, on the first play of the fourth quarter. Randle ran into a group of bodies off right tackle, but bounced outside and rushed 59 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

Klatt wasn’t done, though. The junior quarterback drove Colorado downfield on its next drive, capped by Bobby Purify’s one-yard run.

Klatt put the Buffaloes ahead, 28-21, on the first play of their next possession with a 56-yard pass to Ron Monteilh. Three minutes later, Klatt and Monteilh hooked up again for a 54-yard insurance score.

Swanson finished 14-of-38 passing for 153 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions – two in the second half. He had eight rushes for minus-9 yards.

Randle finished with 215 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. He also added 107 kick return yards and caught four passes for 18 yards.

Brandon Rideau caught three passes for 58 yards, Mark Simmons had two receptions for 39 yards, and Marcus Henry caught two passes for 22 yards.

Klatt finished 17-of-32 passing for 331 yards and three touchdowns. Purify had 105 yards on 33 carries.

Evan Judge caught five passes for 113 yards, Monteilh had 143 yards on four receptions, and Blake Mackey caught three passes for 30 yards.
