Transfers hoping to help defense
Some kind of friendship. Kansas University football transfer Jermail Ashley did everything but strap his buddy Theo Baines into the plane so he’d come to KU. All the thanks he got from his Texas tagalong was him making a funny face behind a reporter so Ashley would crack up during his first interview as a Jayhawk.

Woodling: Woodling: Big Three big key for KU
When their college basketball careers are over, Wayne Simien, Keith Langford and Aaron Miles will go down in Kansas University’s storied history as among the best at what they do. Few KU big men have possessed Simien’s shooting and rebounding skills. Not many KU players have ever been able to manufacture shots like Langford. And when it comes to pure point-guard ability, Miles is up there with Jacque Vaughn, Cedric Hunter and Darnell Valentine. Unfortunately, the NCAA Tournament isn’t a three-on-three contest.

Jayhawks not thrilled over date with UAB
Kansas University isn’t going to have to face a No. 1 seed after all on the road to the Final Four. That fact — the alarming news that Kentucky, the top-seeded team in the NCAA Tournament, was ousted by ninth-seeded Alabama-Birmingham on Sunday — didn’t have Jayhawk players jumping for joy after their 78-63 second-round win over Pacific at Kemper Arena.

'Hyped' Lee sparks Kansas past Tigers
At practice, in team meetings and while hanging out in the hotel room, Aaron Miles noticed a big difference in his roommate the past couple of days. “Mike has been hyped. He’s been excited. He knows it’s time to ball right now,” Miles, Kansas University’s starting point guard, said of his best friend, Michael Lee, who scored nine straight points to bust open a close game and propel the fourth-seeded Jayhawks to a 78-63, second-round NCAA Tournament victory over 12th-seeded Pacific on Sunday afternoon at Kemper Arena.
Woodling: Woodling: Dejvu? This looks like 1988
Most of the time dejvu is a will o’ the wisp that flutters into your brain, then passes into a locked compartment in the back of your mind. Sometimes, though, the feeling you are experiencing something that has happened before hits you like a sponge splatting into a wall. So it was late Sunday afternoon after Alabama-Birmingham had stunned Kentucky only minutes after Kansas University had throttled Pacific in the NCAA Tournament. Suddenly, Kansas would not have to face the No. 1 seed on Friday night in the St. Louis Regional.

Woodling: Woodling: Injuries will be tested on just two days’ rest
When I was a kid and we played “War” in and around the neighborhood backyards, firing harmless cap guns in a mock combative frenzy, you could go down, count to 10 and become a new man. Kind of reminds me of the Kansas University men’s basketball team.

Woodling: Woodling: Whom will Perkins pick?
Now that another dismal Kansas University women’s basketball season is over, it’s speculation time. Who will be the Jayhawks’ next head coach? Your guess is as good as mine, but interim coach Lynette Woodard likely won’t be handed the job on a full-time basis, and KU athletic director Lew Perkins will hire an assistant coach from a successful program (i.e. UConn).
