Bookman misses out on finals

? Kansas University senior Leo Bookman placed seventh in his semifinal heat and 14th overall in the 200 meters Sunday at the USA Track and Field championships.

Bookman, the 2003 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor 200 champion, raced to a clocking of 20.89.

“Leo didn’t make the final, but I think experience counts for everything,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said. “It was his first time in this situation, and hopefully he will be able to understand what the competition at this level is all about and build off that.”

The top four in each heat advanced to the finals.

In another 200 semifinal, Kansas City native Maurice Greene struggled, finishing fourth in his heat and limping off the track.

He then pulled out of the final, which was less than two hours later, because of tendinitis in his right knee.

Former Kansas University runner Charlie Gruber placed fifth in the 1,500 in 3:45.29.

He raced to a 3:49.37 in Friday’s semifinals.

“It was a great effort for Charlie,” Redwine said. “He did everything he was supposed to do, and I think he’ll get some more meets to run this summer.”

KU freshman Cameron Schwehr placed fourth in the junior 1,500 run in a career-best 3:52.59.

Schwehr ran six seconds faster than his second-place semifinal showing Saturday.

“He’s worked really hard, and getting fourth is a great accomplishment,” Redwine said.
