Jayhawk fans to rock St. Louis

By Kendrick Blackwood     Mar 13, 2002

The live band Thursday at the Hard Rock Cafe in St. Louis will add a special tune “I’m a Jayhawk” to the gig’s play list.

It’s what you would expect from the Kansas University Pep Band, especially during a party and rally at the Hard Rock in Union Station that celebrates the Jayhawks’ first-round NCAA Tournament showdown against Holy Cross.

“We’re eating this up,” said Greg Hard, the club’s assistant general manager. “There are a lot of Hard Rockers who expect KU to do well.”

The party at Hard Rock starts at 3 p.m., and the rally gets under way at 4 p.m. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:50 p.m. in the Edward Jones Dome.

A massive throng of KU fans is expected to follow the basketball team to St. Louis. And they’ll make a big splash at the Hard Rock.

“We might see over 1,000 people there,” said Kirk Cerny of the KU Alumni Association.

Even KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway will jump into the mosh pit of Jayhawk mania.

“I will be there with my blue on,” he said.

Here’s an update on tickets and lodging:

l Tickets With 33,000 seats for basketball in the dome, there are plenty of tickets available through Ticketmaster, 314-421-4400 or www.ticketmaster.com. The KU athletic department distributed its allotment of 450 tickets to members of the official traveling party, the Williams Educational Fund and faculty, staff and students selected through a campus drawing.

Mary Hendron, public relations director at the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission, said tickets would go on sale today at the dome box office, which is at Broadway between Plaza and Cole streets.

Tickets $20, $40 or $50 single-game tickets as well as $60, $120 or $150 ticket packages will be available at the box office from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., she said.

l Lodging The tournament hotel for Kansas fans is the Sheraton at Westport, 191 West Port Plaza. It’s a 25-minute drive to the dome. The hotel is offering a $79 rate to KU fans. The team hotel is the Hyatt Regency at Union Station.

Julie Baumann, who books reservations at the Sheraton in St. Louis, said there was a run on rooms at the hotel, but about 100 were still available Tuesday.

“I’m a Jayhawk fan, especially this weekend,” she said.

Cerny said downtown St. Louis hotels were nearly booked because of the tournament, and he expected those on the perimeter of the city to fill quickly.

“I wouldn’t call the market soft,” he said. “They’re filling up.”

Should the Jayhawks advance to the second round, they would face Stanford or Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. Saturday. The pre-game festivities would begin at 1 p.m. at the Hard Rock Cafe. The band and Spirit Squad would join the crowd at 2 p.m.

“We’re going to reserve the whole patio area for KU,” said Hard, of the Cafe. “We’re going to really light it up.”
