Austin, Texas Kansas University's struggling women's basketball team seemed an unlikely candidate to end Texas' winning streak.
But the Jayhawks, behind Brooke Reves' 22 points and 14 rebounds and double-digit scoring performances by guards Jennifer Jackson and Selena Scott, stunned the 21st-ranked Longhorns, 70-60, on Saturday at Erwin Center.
Kansas' Jennifer Jackson fights Texas' Tai Dillard for the ball. KU claimed a 70-60 women's basketball victory over 21st-ranked Texas on Saturday in Austin, Texas.
It was UT's first loss to an unranked opponent in 42 homes games, and it was Texas' first home loss in five games.
"This was the most disappointing game of the season for us," Texas coach Jody Conradt said. "Our guards usually set the tone, and that didn't happen on either end of the court tonight. We broke down on the perimeter, and their guards had a big night."
Jackson, KU's senior shooting guard, had 15 points, and Scott, a junior point guard, added a career high-tying 13.
Kansas (9-11 overall, 3-6 Big 12) had won just two if its last 10 games coming in. Both victories were over Kansas State.
Stacy Stephens led the Longhorns (16-7, 4-5) with 11 points, and Meg Brown finished with 10.
Texas came out cold in the first half. The Longhorns' only basket in the first three minutes was a jumper from Dana Godfrey, and UT hit just 26.5 percent of its field goals.
Texas, which was down by three at halftime and never led, trailed by as many as 13 in the second half.
JoRuth Woods, who had 25 points in the Longhorns' 65-62 win over No. 23 Colorado on Wednesday, only scored three against the Jayhawks.
"There are a lot of questions and we are searching for the answers," Woods said. "We can't give up now and think that our season is over."
Starters accounted for all but two of Kansas' points. Jaclyn Johnson and KC Hilgenkamp each scored nine points for the Jayhawks, who have won four in a row against UT.
KU will play host to Colorado on Wednesday.
