Jayhawks fight back to beat Turkey in tournament opener, 66-57

Gwangju, South Korea — The Kansas University men's basketball team fought back from an 11-point deficit in the first quarter against Turkey to win its first game in the World University Games, 66-57, at Dongkang College Gymnasium.

The Jayhawks fell behind during an 18-2 run by Turkey in the middle of the first quarter when Turkey made seven straight shots, but responded with a 11-2 run to start the second quarter and a 12-2 run to open the third.

Wayne Selden (19 points, 9 rebounds), Perry Ellis (17 points, 6 rebounds) and Frank Mason III (12 points, 4 assists) led the way for the Jayhawks.

The game turned when: KU went on a 12-2 run to open the second half, earning its first lead since the first three minutes of the game. In the run, Turkey went 1-for-8 from the floor with two turnovers while the Jayhawks went 5-for-9 from the field, including a three-pointer from Selden.
