Jayhawks earn first win under Clint Bowen

Sometimes the best things are worth waiting for. Kansas University's football team routed Iowa State, 34-14, on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium, the first win under interim head coach Clint Bowen.

The Jayhawks (3-6, 1-5 in Big 12) started fast with two touchdowns on their first two drives, and eventually took a 24-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Cyclones (2-7, 0-6) fought back with a touchdown a minute before halftime, and another score to open the third quarter, but a missed field goal sparked the Jayhawks, as they drove 80 yards and ended the drive with a one-yard touchdown run from junior quarterback Michael Cummings.

KU recorded 514 yards on offense, including 278 through the air from Cummings, and more than 100 yards on the ground apiece from Tony Pierson and Corey Avery.

After the game, students rushed the field and even took down one of the goal posts in celebration, as the Jayhawks gave Bowen a celebratory gatorade bath.

HOW THEY SCORED

First Quarter

9:21 — Corey Avery 14 run. Matthew Wyman kick. In what was probably their most impressive game-opening drive of the season, the Jayhawks marched 81 yards in 12 plays and 5:39 to take the early lead. Quarterback Michael Cummings was 4-for-4 passing for 38 yards on the drive and Jimmay Mundine caught two balls for 19 yards and Nigel King snagged one for 21 and a key first down. (KU 7, ISU 0).

4:24 — Jimmay Mundine 20 pass from Michael Cummings. Wyman kick. The KU defense matched the offense's hot start with a three-and-out on ISU's first possession and that gave the ball back to the Kansas offense at its own 42 yard line. Eight plays and 58 yards later, Cummings hit Mundine on a corner route to put KU up two scores. Cummings was 4-for-4 on the drive for 31 yards and Tony Pierson added a 16-yard run during the drive that took 3:24. (KU 14, ISU 0).

0:41 — Matthew Wyman 35 field goal. After another stop from the Kansas defense, the KU offense scored points for the third time in three possessions, this time with second-string QB Montell Cozart leading the drive while Cummings was being attended to in the locker room. Cozart connected on two of three pass attempts and Pierson added a 29-yard run to set up the kick. (KU 17, ISU 0).

Second Quarter

5:25 — Tony Pierson 6 run. Wyman kick. KU's fourth scoring drive of the game also was one of its most impressive. It spanned 13 plays and 91 yards in 5:11 and featured another strong effort from Cummings, who completed six of eight passes for 62 yards to set up Pierson's plunge. (KU 24, ISU 0).

1:13 — E.J. Bibbs 3 pass from Grant Rohach. Cole Netten kick. After a failed fourth-and-five try by KU at the Iowa State 38, the Cyclones seized the momentum and turned it into points. Rohach hit Allen Lazard for a 32-yard gain on the first play and four plays and two Kansas penalties later, the Cyclones were in the end zone. The drive spanned 62 yards in five plays and 1:38. (KU 24, ISU 7).

Third Quarter

13:53 — D'Vario Montgomery 35 pass from Grant Rohach. Netten kick. Iowa State opened up the second half with a quick-strike scoring drive that featured three plays of 13 yards or longer and three big runs from Aaron Wimberly. ISU's second touchdown drive covered 75 yards in four plays and 1:07 and put the Cyclones right back into the game. (KU 24, ISU 14).

2:49 — Michael Cummings 1 run. Wyman kick. After ISU's Cole Netten missed a 37-yard field goal try, the Jayhawks drove 80 yards in nine plays and 3:46 to jump back in front by three scores. Cummings hit Nick Harwell with a 31-yard pass to get things going and later found Nigel King for a 42-yard gain on third-and-19 that set up the TD run. (KU 31, ISU 14).

Fourth Quarter

13:13 — Matthew Wyman 37 field goal. After a strip, sack and fumble recovery by Victor Simmons, the Jayhawks added to their lead with a nine-play, 27-yard drive that took 3:37 and featured a huge catch-and-conversion from Jimmay Mundine on third down and four runs from Pierson. (KU 34, ISU 14).

I think that is more for the constant "bring back Mangino" from Joe and "Mangino gonna hang a hundred on us" from Doug. Not about the stance on the HC search.

Cody Riedy in reply to Kerby Rice

He most definitely was ecstatic in the post-game interview.

Kerby Rice

Bowen has to be ecstatic, got his first HC win and against his mentor. Mike Cummings is even cool in the post game interview. Lovin this guy and having him in command of our program

Crimsonorblue22 in reply to Bobby Nightengale

Thanks and don't be a stranger! Our good luck charm!

David Meredith

Sooo, do they fish those things out of the lake? Or are there like 100 of them in there?

Scott Wooten

ROCKCHALK

Jayhawkinaustin in reply to Jmfitz85

A bit unfair to Joe. He's never been against Bowen, just wasn't convinced yet.

Scott Wooten

forget the goal post. let them enjoy it without trolling. It has bee a long time.

Cody Riedy in reply to Crimsonorblue22

yeah, that doesn't look safe

Bryce Landon in reply to Brad Swisher

Because it's Iowa State.

Lawkan in reply to Micky Baker

they just cleaned that up too.

Crimsonorblue22

Hope nobody gets hurt

Micky Baker

But, oh well.

Cody Riedy

I think in this case going on the field is ok. Fans that actually fill the stadium and stay there deserve to celebrate. Taking down the goal post is going a bit far. Though i partook in it years ago on a day we beat Misery.

Bobby Nightengale

Looks like one of the goal posts is going down, despite objections from the PA announcer.

Micky Baker

Campus maintenance is going to be angry that they have to work on Sunday removing a goal post from the pond.

Bobby Nightengale in reply to Kerby Rice

Thanks! First time I've seen KU in person. Glad it was memorable.

Lawkan

bah get off the goal post

Mcgirl

Congratulations Jayhawks!

Micky Baker

I'm really happy to see this win, but we still have some football left to play. The culture seems to be changing within the program.

Brad Swisher in reply to Bryce Landon

Wins have been hard to come by lately if you haven't noticed....what's wrong with running on the field to celebrate with the players? They deserve it.

Kerby Rice in reply to Bobby Nightengale

great first outing Bobby

Cody Riedy in reply to Bryce Landon

Well, in fairness, you can't really say "act like you've been there" because for the students at KU now, they haven't.

Bobby Nightengale

Thanks for joining the live blog today, everybody. It was fun. Glad to see pride around the KU football program.

David Meredith

Congrats to Bowen and the Seniors to get this win. They deserve it

Bryce Landon

Oh, great, the fans are storming the field to celebrate a win over Iowa State? Iowa freaking State?

Scott Wooten

Jayhawk Nation baby!

Crimsonorblue22

Cool

FINAL
Iowa State 14
Kansas 34

Bobby Nightengale

Fans storm the field as Clint Bowen earns his first win as interim head coach.

Cody Riedy

I can understand why some people want to do our due diligence in a HC search first, but I don't think there could be a better hypothetical situation than Bowen working out.

Bobby Nightengale

Did anyone change their mind about Bowen being named head coach after today's performance?

Crimsonorblue22 in reply to Ian Ballinger

I know what u mean! These kids deserve this!

Saguaro_jayhawk

Let's leave the goal posts alone

Kerby Rice

so was KU practicing for ISU last week?

Brad Swisher in reply to Bobby Nightengale

I agree Bobby, the change is evident.

Bobby Nightengale

Pretty impressive the way Bowen has changed the spirit of the team since he was named interim head coach.

Brad Swisher in reply to Scott Wooten

Agreed.

Ian Ballinger in reply to Scott Wooten

me too

Crimsonorblue22

Rock chalk chant means more to Bowen than any other guy

Scott Wooten

Bowen is a true Jayhawk. I hope he gets the job.

Cody Riedy in reply to Jmfitz85

LOL

Bobby Nightengale

Ben Heeney and Jimmay Mundine get Bowen with the gatorade bath.

Ian Ballinger

I missed the RC chant

Kerby Rice in reply to Jmfitz85

haha i think this will dismiss the Mangino talk

Ian Ballinger in reply to Lawkan

Just let me have this Saturday

Crimsonorblue22

Zenger hasn't got much right!

Jmfitz85

Joe Ross and Doug Cramer are in their bedrooms crying in the fetal position right now.

Bryce Landon in reply to Ian Ballinger

No.

Lawkan in reply to Ian Ballinger

not so fast.

Crimsonorblue22 in reply to Ian Ballinger

I like it!

Bryce Landon

I hear the students chanting "Bowen! Bowen! Bowen!" The Jayhawks can still do a hell of a lot better than Bowen.

Ian Ballinger

HIRE CLINT!

Ian Ballinger

Chants of "BOWEN BOWEN" in the stands

Scott Wooten

what a great Saturday... Thank you Hawks!

Bobby Nightengale

Any guesses on the gatorade color?

Micky Baker in reply to Cody Riedy

If Bowen isn't hired, he'll likely be DC.

Bryce Landon

JaCorey Shepherd grabs an interception in the end zone, and the Jayhawks get the ball at their own 20-yard line. Iowa State has no timeouts remaining.

Micky Baker

That was a great interception by Shepherd.

Cody Riedy in reply to Kerby Rice

I was kind of thinking that.

Ian Ballinger

well done jacorey

Lawkan

woot sixth time was the charm.

Kerby Rice in reply to Cody Riedy

could he be our DC next year?

Ian Ballinger in reply to Cody Riedy

right now i'd be pissed

Cody Riedy

If you were an Iowa State fan, how would you feel about your head coach? He's only had one season where ISU finished above .500 and that was a 7-6 year, but they've been to 3 bowl games in 6 years.

Bobby Nightengale

Courtney Arnick delivering a big hit to knock the ball loose. Long third down for ISU.

Crimsonorblue22

Not to many penalties today either.

Kerby Rice

havent seen a pardula shank today...

Lawkan

roughing

Ian Ballinger in reply to Micky Baker

I'm not saying I would.

Ian Ballinger in reply to Lawkan

OU is an away game. TCU is next

Micky Baker in reply to Ian Ballinger

You don't go conservative here yet. If we were up by 30 or more, then okay.

Rick McGowwan

Go for it. :)

Bobby Nightengale

KU forced to punt, but ISU now out of timeouts with 4:13 left.

Crimsonorblue22 in reply to Ian Ballinger

Well, it would be a huge upset! Kstate is a possibility! Guys will like this feeling!

Ian Ballinger in reply to Micky Baker

I agree, but I bet Clint plays conservatively here. He's got class

Lawkan

OU is next and will probably not have Knight. 3 more wins to go bowling!

Micky Baker

ISU going to use their TOs. So, I say, go for another score to make them wave the white flag.

Crimsonorblue22 in reply to Bobby Nightengale

Yes!

Ian Ballinger in reply to Crimsonorblue22

TCU.. lol

Lawkan in reply to Bobby Nightengale

definitely

Crimsonorblue22 in reply to Ian Ballinger

Yes!! Who is next?

Bobby Nightengale

Was this a must-win game for Clint Bowen?

Rick McGowwan in reply to Crimsonorblue22

Bama.

Ian Ballinger in reply to Kerby Rice

i agree

Ian Ballinger in reply to Bobby Nightengale

make that 500 for the offense

Kerby Rice in reply to Ian Ballinger

boateng will be a good player eventually just scares the crap outa me every single down.

David Meredith

Ballgame! The streets of Ames will be filled with tears tonight.

Ian Ballinger in reply to Crimsonorblue22

games are played for a reason

Crimsonorblue22

Who's next? Ug

Bobby Nightengale

338 yards on offense for ISU, but just 14 points. KU's offense has 499 yards and the Jayhawks are 11-for-18 on third down.

Crimsonorblue22 in reply to Ian Ballinger

Sure does!

Ian Ballinger in reply to Rick McGowwan

Honestly feels better than it sounds

Bobby Nightengale

Nice coverage by the Jayhawks' secondary after Rohach rolled out and avoided a few sacks.

Rick McGowwan

Okay, now we can do it: We're #9, We're #9, We're #9.

Crimsonorblue22

Good coverage! Looked like we had a hundred d backs

Ian Ballinger

Now let's get 7,... no mercy

Rick McGowwan in reply to Kerby Rice

I'm glad Davis has moved up, he has some skills.
