K-State shuts down KU's season with 51-13 romp

Manhattan — Playing in the eighth and final game of Clint Bowen’s interim head-coaching run, Kansas University’s football team got a taste of Kansas State football early and never recovered in a 51-13 rivalry loss at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

The No. 11 Wildcats (9-2 overall, 7-1 Big 12) reached the end zone on a one-yard carry by quarterback Jake Waters on their first possession of the afternoon, and within a minute KU’s rival would make another trip to the purple-painted turf on the other side of the goal line.

Kansas junior quarterback Michael Cummings looked for Jimmay Mundine over the middle on KU’s second drive, but the tight end only got one hand on it and K-State’s Dante Barnett swiped it out of the air for an interception.

One 44-yard Waters pass to Tyler Lockett later, K-State had a 14-0 lead with 10:18 left in the first quarter.

The Jayhawks (3-9, 1-8) wouldn’t reach the end zone until the second quarter, and even after an easy touchdown toss from Cummings to Nick Harwell, Matthew Wyman’s extra-point attempt was blocked.

K-State, which outgained its rival 505-197 in yardage, did as it pleased most of the game on offense. Waters completed 21 of his 27 throws for 294 yards and four touchdowns even though coach Bill Snyder and his staff pulled him late in the third quarter, up 45-13.

Senior Wildcats receiver Tyler Lockett caught nine passes for 141 yards and a TD on the day he became K-State’s all-time leading receiver, with 222 receptions — passing the previous record of 217, held by his father, Kevin.

Cummings hit on 16 of his 27 passes for 139 yards and a pair of TD’s for Kansas, with two interceptions.

The loss, KU’s third in a row, marked the end of the season and the beginning of rampant speculation regarding who Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger will hire as the program’s next head coach.

Baylor is trying to blow it big time today.

Texashawk10_2

The problems with KU football will not be fixed overnight even with the greatest college football staff assembled. It takes time. KU's depth will be very depleted for the next few years because of the JuCo experiment. JuCo recruiting should never be more than 1/3 of a class and should be used to fill in gaps in the depth chart, not build depth. Kansas has a great JuCo system that needs to be utilized much more efficiently and effectively than has been in recent years.

Ian Ballinger

Respect to the seniors. Thank you for four years. See the rest of you next year.

Ole Miss is going to win, that'll get a Big 12 team in the playoff. Should be Baylor unless the selection committee decides that the on field results don't matter.

Lawkan

the governors cup looks better than the national championship trophy.

Lawkan

I hope he drops it on his foot.

Ian Ballinger

Hope Bowen gets the job still. He's had me sold for weeks. I don't blame his for this loss

Lawkan

If Mississippi St and Missouri can compete in the SEC and Arizona in the Pac 12, Minnesota in the Big 10 then we can compete too.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff in reply to Ian Ballinger

Still, by his standards that's not much

Jhawki78

Sad when Pardulas kicks out gain the offense

Ian Ballinger in reply to Benton Smith

I'll eat my words

Rick McGowwan

It was fun hanging with everyone this year. KU Football is way down, but we won't be forever. Here's hoping next year is the start of righting the ship. I'll see everyone on the BBall boards starting tomorrow.

Jhawki78

There is notHing more to say. The game and score speak for itself. hope HCBS can help us salvage this weekend

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff in reply to Ian Ballinger

6 tackles (5 solo) and 1 TFL for Heeney.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff in reply to Lawkan

Did they really? Seems like they'll make the 4-team playoff and get blown out in the semis.

Texashawk10_2 in reply to Lawkan

Love seems to always be hurt though, and with Jacob Bragg's size, I think he's better suited to play guard. If Bolton can show the skills that got him offers to some of the elite SEC schools, that would be huge for KU next year, but I just don't see that happening at this point.

Lawkan

Florida St escapes again.

Lawkan

Andrew Bolton was playing well in the middle of the season then kind of disappeared again.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

That last K-State drive: 13 plays, 51 yards, 7:12.

Lawkan in reply to Texashawk10_2

Jacob Bragg should be our center next year. Jake Love will be back. The freshmen receivers will be interesting to watch. Greg Allen and Colin Spencer at cornerback. Kellen Ash at linebacker

Here's the pieces the next coach is inheriting that I like. Cummings, King, Avery, Mann, Cox, Ben Johnson, Joe Gibson, and Junior Visinia on offense. Matt Boatang, Fish Smithson, Isaiah Johnson, Kyron Watson, Schyler Miles, TJ Semke, DJ Williams, and Ben Goodman on defense. There's pieces to build around for the next coach, but the overall depth is beyond bad.

Ian Ballinger

Man... even Heeney is being quieter than usual. This is a sad end..

Lawkan

our record with 4 and 5 star guys is ridiculous.

Texashawk10_2 in reply to Lawkan

Based on the Senior Day activities, yes to Cox and no to Bourbon.

Travisbetz

Bourbon no cox yes

Lawkan

any word on if Bourbon and Cox are going to try to comeback next year?

Chris Gilbertson

ugh less than 1 qtr left of the season I don't know if I should feel sad or relieved

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

King with some DB instincts there, preventing the K-State interception on Cummings' deep ball.

Travisbetz

We have a young man from our hometown that is on KSU's team. He told me this past summer that KU looks the part but when they played last year, KU quit and quit early.

Charlie, God love him, ruined a lot.

Travisbetz

Charlie ruined a lot of these guys

Hawk90 in reply to Ian Ballinger

I think Charlie ruined him

Runningbeakers84 in reply to Ian Ballinger

If in interesting you mean, worse play, I agree. Unless our next HC becomes "Mr. February" we are in for tough times.....and we will look back to this year as "better days". I pray that I am wrong.

Lawkan

we do lose a bunch of key guys but our we have pretty good replacements for most of them.

Hawk90 in reply to Jonathan Briles

That was the one name I was thinking of when I said my last comment lol. Maybe as a DC, but not as a HC.

Ian Ballinger in reply to Travisbetz

I'm sure Pierson is a great guy, but I agree... I've been MAJORLY unimpressed by him the entire season.

Jayhawkinaustin in reply to Ian Ballinger

If, by "interesting", you mean, "horrible like the previous five".

Travisbetz

Pull Pierson off the field. He's done. He took that pass and stepped out of bounds. He had no interest in trying to gain any further yardage.

Ian Ballinger in reply to Robert Brown

Next year will be interesting.

I think the depletion of talent next year makes it more likely that Bowen gets hired. There is a talent gap with this team and many of the better players are seniors this year.

Jonathan Briles in reply to Hawk90

I agree with that. Someone asked me the other day how cool it would be if KU hauled in Will Muschamp and I said that would not be cool at all. If he can't win with that talent how is he going to win with ours. I hate getting coaches fresh off being fired.

Travisbetz

Okay. When the radio announcers start questioning the players effort then I know it's not just me. If these guys want Bowen to be the next HC, they are not doing him any favors with their lack of effort. Many look like they are not interested.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Jake Waters has left the game for K-State. No reason to risk an injury at this point.

Ian Ballinger in reply to Chris Gilbertson

poor Gill. i wanted him to be the one. he's had success with the Liberty Flames. They're in the FCS Playoffs.

that wasn't late

Hawk90 in reply to Jonathan Briles

As long as we don't get another coach who has a record of bing fired, I'll stand behind them.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Ben Johnson grab only gets 5 yards, so KU is punting again. It's Pardula's 4th.

Chris Gilbertson in reply to Ian Ballinger

I'm not so sure about that, I was saying there was nowhere to go but up after Gill

Ian Ballinger in reply to Lawkan

k, you got me there. major sports, though. I believe in Bowen. Nowhere to go but up

Jonathan Briles in reply to Hawk90

I guess all our questions and little debate will be settled in the next few weeks. Regardless of how things shake out I'll be as excited as ever to see the start of next season.

Lawkan

on a positive note Snyder is too old to even up the series.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

2 straight carries for Pierson. Neither goes more than 1 yard.

Runningbeakers84 in reply to Lawkan

Major sports.

Lawkan in reply to Ian Ballinger

no respect for womens track and field?

Ian Ballinger in reply to Kellerman411

no but i'm sick of this being a one sport school...

Hawk90 in reply to Jonathan Briles

Can agree with that, this certainly doesn't bode well for Bowen. But I've personally seen enough to think Bowen could have success.

Kellerman411

On a positive note, I really like the way KU basketball has rebounded from the UK game. See what I did there?

Jhawki78 in reply to Kellerman411

Bump!

Hawk90 in reply to Kellerman411

Please don't act all high and mighty. I do know football pretty well. I'm still defending. Look at how 24 defended his guy vs 12. That was on 12. He got burned by the double move.

Robert Brown in reply to Lawkan

No they weren't

Texashawk10_2 in reply to Jhawki78

Hyperbole much? The Gill secondaries were much worse. Jacorey Shepherd shuts his half of the field down on a consistent basis.

Jonathan Briles in reply to Hawk90

I say yes too, but not enough. Most of the actual improvement has been on offense and he deserves credit for putting things in the right places, but Kiesau deserves more credit for that improvement. Bowen has control of the whole team. Offense looks better, but the defense looks the exact same even with more coming from the offense and the ST looks even worse than before. Bowen has done good things I'm not arguing that at all. I agree with a lot of what you are saying. My main point is that what he has produced is not enough to guarantee a job like this. If they do the search and the committee calls his name I'll respect that, but to say he outright deserves the job based on what he has done is just looking at the situation with crimson and blue glasses.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Total yards update: KU 179, K-State 425.

1st downs: KU 12, K-State 23.

Total plays: KU 37, K-State 50.

Kellerman411

Bowen is not going to be hired. Zenger knows the game and sees how out of position we are. I'm sorry but if you're watching this game and still defending Bowen, you must not know football. This is no talent issue. We aren't communicating and everything they do is catching us off guard. Again, the kids are just out of position. Also, the tackling tonight has been particularly poor.

Lawkan

now thats a run.

Jhawki78 in reply to Texashawk10_2

I don't know' this defense is pretty bad. Hard to imagine it could be any worse.

Jhawki78 in reply to Rick McGowwan

Agree this is the worst secondary I have ever seen. Constantly beat and play 10 yards off line of scrimmage

Hawk90 in reply to Lawkan

Not win percentage wise.

Lawkan in reply to Texashawk10_2

hehe at least they didn't have overtime back then.

Rick McGowwan in reply to Kellerman411

Our safeties and corners constantly don't communicate. It looked like we thought there was help over the top. There wasn't.

The Toilet Bowl, 'nuff said about the late 80's KU football teams

Lawkan

the schedule is just a lot tougher now a days.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Jake Waters avoids pressure, guns it deep to wide-open Curry Sexton — 37-yard K-State TD. KU down 45-13, 3:16 3Q.

Hawk90 in reply to Jonathan Briles

They were but our program has been terrible. My point is have we seen improvement? I say yes.

Kellerman411

How do you get beat by 15 yards when your opponent is at midfield?

Rick McGowwan in reply to Jonathan Briles

I'm with you. I think Bowen is our safety choice. This job will be offered to others first. And it should be.

Lawkan in reply to Hawk90

the 80s were much worse.

Jonathan Briles in reply to Hawk90

Like Lawkan said he took over arguably the worst team in history. All in all I'm just defending my point. If Bowen gets hired I won't be furious. I'll be disappointed because I think we can do better, but we can do worse as well. I just think these players have more to offer than what our coaches have gotten out of them. Its not just Bowen its our assistants too and I'm not sure the type of staff that Bowen could put together.

Hawk90 in reply to Lawkan

Worse win percentage in the past 3 years. It's pretty close.

Texashawk10_2

The next coach is going to inherit some nice pieces on offense next year. Defense is going to be a mess though.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Haven't talked a lot about KU defense today.

Total tackle leaders: Sendish 7, Isaiah Johnson 6, Dexter McDonald 4, Ben Heeney 4, Michael Reynolds 4.

Hawk90 in reply to Joe Ross

I think that's fair to say.

Lawkan in reply to Hawk90

not even close.

Kellerman411

This is soooooo easy. Why are we playing so far off the ball??? Are we playing with 10 guys???

Hawk90 in reply to Lawkan

That's very true. Bowen got possibly the worse team in our team history.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Waters slings it around even better than I expected. 19 of 25 for 244 yards and 3 TDs today.

Texashawk10_2

Shepherd's still playing hard.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Nice timing and hit by Shepherd on a 2-yard catch by Lockett, who now has 8 grabs.

Hawk90 in reply to Jonathan Briles

I just think they are they much more fundamentally sound. Similar level of athletes who are much better at getting their job done.

Lawkan in reply to Hawk90

but he inherited what may well be the worst football team in NCAA history.

Joe Ross in reply to Joe Ross

I think its best to see Bowen as a question mark, seen in a favorable light. But his candidacy as an unknown will be measured against other knowns. Im going to go on record and say that Bowen impressed me greatly, but he will not be the next coach at Kansas.
