Final: Kansas 86, Iona 66

Kansas University sophomore Perry Ellis continued his push for the most underrated player in the world title, freshman Joel Embiid continued to show why Rick Pitino said he could be the No. 2 overall pick in next June's draft, and the rest of the Jayhawks fell in line right behind them in a hard-fought, but convincing 86-66 victory over Iona at Allen Fieldhouse.

Flashing his wide variety of post moves, Ellis paced the Jayhawks with 13 first-half points and finished the game with 21.

Not to be outdone, Embiid also looked sharp in the post and also flushed home a couple of big-time dunks and grabbed seemingly every rebound he could get his hands on. He finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds on 7-of-7 shooting.

Oh yeah, and then there was Andrew Wiggins' ho-hum night — 13 points and 7 rebounds — a 10:1 assists to turnover ratio from Naadir Tharpe, who added 5 points and 3 rebounds and a 9-point night from Frank Mason that included being on the finishing end of an alley oop pass from Tharpe midway through the second half.

There may have been a few defensive breakdowns throughout this one, but the offensive highlights and KU's explosiveness more than made up for it.

The 2nd-ranked Jayhawks improve to 3-0 with the victory, while Iona falls to 1-2.

Here’s a quick look back at some of the action:

The game turned when: KU opened the second half above the rim. After taking a 41-36 into the locker room after a hard-fought first half, KU flexed its muscles with a couple of monster alley-oops during the opening minutes of the second half and pushed the lead to double digits — 64-54 — by the 10-minute mark. Adding five points to the lead was not, in itself, incredible, but pushing the lead to double figures against a scrappy Iona team had to be a mental blow to the visitors.

Offensive highlight: Joel Embiid had plenty of pretty moves, particularly in the first half, but none of them got the crowd going the way the Naadir-Tharpe-to-Andrew-Wiggins alley-oop that opened the second half did. After a hard-fought first half, KU led just 41-36. But on the Jayhawks' first possession of the second 20 minutes, Tharpe lofted the ball high to the left corner of the backboard from the right wing and Wiggins flew higher to pick it up and throw it down. Pretty routine by Wiggins' standards, but a spectacle for the rest of us. On the very next possession, Tharpe threw another one, this one right at the rim, and Embiid powered it through the hoop over an opponent. Incredible stretch.

Defensive highlight: Joel Embiid gave us a serious look at what kind of a defensive force he could be near the 15:20 mark of the second half. As Iona guard Tre Bowman drove deep into the lane to set up the easy drop off pass to big man Daniel Robinson, Embiid slid over to the right side of the lane to cut off the drive. As soon as Gomez dropped the pass off, Embiid slipped back to his man, Robinson, and swatted away a layup attempt.... with authority. I know it looks like it's easy for a man with Embiid's length and size, but what he did on that one possession was as much as some people do during an entire workout.

Key stat: Field goal percentage. The Jayhawks shot 57 percent and limited the Gaels to just 39, a feat that was made easier by KU's high percentage of dunks and layups.

Up next: The Jayhawks will continue with their non-conference schedule at 7 p.m. Friday when they face Towson at Allen Fieldhouse.

Don't discount coaching.

Don Burgundy in reply to Jaycon11

Hoiberg and co. don't have the same breed of athletes like us...just saying

Jaycon11 in reply to Don Burgundy

I always worry abt Hoiberg, esp on the road. Just ask Michigan.

D_bradley27

At times it looked like AAU out there. Scary!

Eric TheCapn

Thanks Kent! Even if we lose, I will continue to predict it and block any losses out of my memory.

Don Burgundy

The only team that really scares me is OK st...

D_bradley27

Rock Chalk!

Kent Richardson in reply to Eric TheCapn

I will remember!

Tammyn26

why didn't greene play?

Jaycon11

When Wiggins and Selden step up big time...it'll be amazing

Eric TheCapn

Just remember, I was the only one to predict an undefeated season.

Rodney Crain

I'll take it

Lajayhawk

And this team will only get better. Yowsa.

Eric TheCapn in reply to Lajayhawk

Jayhawk, Go KU!

Jaycon11

great game.

Lajayhawk

Rock Chalk

D_bradley27

If not for Black, Lucas would be getting some time this year.

Eric TheCapn in reply to Lajayhawk

...and he also looks exactly like a college president is required to look.

Lajayhawk

Lucas looks a bit slow.

D_bradley27 in reply to Lajayhawk

Yes. Was around for the majority of the 90's

Eric TheCapn in reply to Lajayhawk

Yes.

Lajayhawk

Wait, the Iona president is a KU grad?

Lajayhawk

Remember Self saying how far Lucas has come? I guess he's going to be another Withey. Have some big years in his upperclassman days.

Jaycon11

Have Self the younger slip the boot over to Greene and let's get that medical redshirt official.

Stupidmichael

translation: He's transferring. Daaaaaaaaaangit

Matt Tait KUsports.com staff

Offensive masterpiece. It'll be interesting to see what Self has to say about the D. But the Jayhawks showed some serious explosiveness and efficiency tonight on offense. 10:1 assists/turnover ratio for Tharpe and he was about the 5th or 6th best player out there tonight. This team is crazy good.

D_bradley27

Clearly my refresh is behind. Sorry guys.

Stupidmichael

"Hurt." - Bill Self

Stupidmichael

He's gotta be hurt.

D_bradley27

Still no Greene.

Danr in reply to Don Burgundy

Definitely in the dog house

Eric TheCapn in reply to Jaycon11

Skynet wins. I say it's official.

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

Brannen Green = doghouse

Jaycon11 in reply to Lajayhawk

You can call him Bead. I'll call him Skynet.

Vajay

maybe Wiggins is going to be our new lockdown defender...

Stupidmichael

I'm guessing Greene is injured or majorly, majorly in the dog house.

Lajayhawk

BEAD: 16 pts, 13 boards, 2 blocks, and 7-7 from the field. Welcome to the bigs, Joel.

Bwag in reply to Tom Keegan

Solid, thanks.

Jaycon11 in reply to D_bradley27

Agreed. But Manning is no longer on the staff...

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff in reply to Bwag

Wiggins 13 pts, 6 reb. 3 asst., 2 steals, 4-9, 1-4, 4-4, Has guarded Isaiah Williams much of night: 1 for 7, 1-5, 7 boards, three points.

Kent Richardson

This team may average like Roy's did.

D_bradley27

Wow. Traylor and Black have labored thus far in the season. Some moments here and there but neither where I thought they'd be

Lajayhawk

Between Perry and BEAD, I can't imagine Traylor is going to get a ton of minutes. Probably average 5-10 a game.

Don Burgundy

Good lord Traylor

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

Exactly.

Lajayhawk in reply to Bwag

And zero turnovers and zero fouls.

Bwag in reply to Lajayhawk

Thanks

Jaycon11 in reply to Lajayhawk

Let me put it this way: make no plans on game night from January through April.

Kent Richardson

Embiid is serious about every play.

Lajayhawk in reply to Bwag

13 points, 6 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals. Very solid.

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

Kansas on 17-3 run.

Danr in reply to Stupidmichael

We've played loose defense

Lajayhawk

BEAD

Bwag

What's Wiggins line?

Wissoxfan83 in reply to Don Burgundy

I am relaxed. It was my sarcasm font

Stupidmichael

Also, have the refs called this game more loosely? Or are the players starting to "adjust?"

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

I've seen moments tonight we we are unstoppable. By anyone. Do that regularly… LOOK OUT.

Jaycon11 in reply to Stupidmichael

maye he'll get "injured," to medical redshirt.

Stupidmichael in reply to Jaycon11

Figured he'd get some PT against Iona's zone. Wonder if it was something that was kept on the DL, or maybe just happened recently.

Lajayhawk in reply to Tom Keegan

Exactly, right? What's the last KU team you've seen this athletically deep? It's insane.

Jaycon11 in reply to Lajayhawk

yeah, when we click, we'll be world beaters.

Kent Richardson in reply to Tom Keegan

Every time they come down on offense it is such a difference than last year

Jaycon11 in reply to Stupidmichael

no word on that. probably mop duty.

Don Burgundy in reply to Wissoxfan83

He almost has a double double, relax

Lajayhawk

I hate to say this out loud so early in the year, but…. we are a very good basketball team. Yes, we need work defensively, but... sweet merciful crap.

John Lee

SELDEN 1 on 4 TAKE A HIKE IONA!

Colreader

This comment board is about a minute behind the audio stream.

Wissoxfan83

We got some guy who's the next Lebron? Where's he been?

Stupidmichael

So I missed the early comments from the blog... Is Brennan Greene hurt? He hasn't played a minute.

John Lee in reply to Tom Keegan

nice summation!

Stupidmichael

I almost feel sorry for Perry Ellis. What a stud. And he gets practically no hype.

Eric TheCapn in reply to John Lee

Yeah, but Tharpe can go ahead and not shoot the rest of the game, too.... :)

Lajayhawk

Seriously, how do you guard Perry Ellis? Anyone else thinks he looks like a polished Wayne Simien already?

Tom Keegan KUsports.com staff

A 7-footer who has the feet of a 5-11 guy and a 5-11 guy who is on receiving end of lob. And Embiid and Mason come off the bench so far. Deepest team in college basketball in years.

John Lee

and THARPE has 9 assists... needs to take a few more shots to hit double double as well

Kevin Woods

Dunk you very much!

Jaycon11

woodshed.

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

You could see Williams looking for Embiid on that drive. Like, 'OK, I know he's coming to swat this. Where is he?'

D_bradley27

I think we have a new starting center

Wissoxfan83

Shoot, if he keeps this up he's definitely going pro

Stupidmichael

That was a nice stretch for Kansas with Ellis and Wiggins both on the bench.

Lajayhawk in reply to Lajayhawk

13 and 10 according to ESPN.

alley oop nonetheless

General Mason!!

Kevin Woods

Replay!

John Lee

MASON CAN DUNK!?!

Lajayhawk

Even MASON can get up. WE ARE SO EFFING ATHLETIC!!!!!!!!

Benton Smith KUsports.com staff

Frank Mason rocking the oop. Is there anybody in a KU uniform who can't finish that lob? OK, Tyler Self.

Stupidmichael

Holy smokes.

Eric TheCapn

*had

Lajayhawk in reply to Jaycon11

Yeah, that's the only time I can think of that compares. We had a lot of guys that grew in skill (i.e. Cole Aldrich), but I don't think we had this kind of athletic ability… down to like 10 guys deep. Insane.
